Audiobus: Use your music apps together.
What is Audiobus? — Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.
Download on the App StoreAudiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

i think you can download samples from the rubber tracks website into ipad via the browser in Audioshare
Oh yeah. No problem there and it's a great resource, but , boy, it would ne nice to be directly in their app on the ipad and at least be able to copy/paste.
Thanks.
you and I will take this request to our graves

This is a really good site for samples: http://sampleswap.org/
All kinds of stuff from public and spoken word to field recordings.
I will follow you....
Thanks @musikmachine, love the idea of sharing and creative libraries, but it's got to be a legal minefield with regard to copyright and vetting, but still good to see some giving it a go.
This is a random request, but I'm looking for the Linn LM2 samples package from Samples From Mars. If anyone got it while it was available, please let me know. They are the best-sounding I've ever heard.
Most of the links in this thread point to resources that have free samples (along with samples for sale):

Yeah the site owner says vets all the submissions but i wouldn't use anything in a commercial release unless i was 100% sure it was PD or royalty free.
Here is a basic list of rules to consider for sampling legally. I figure this will help. :-) (Warning Blatantly Plagiarized info taken and compiled from many, many KVR posts):
There is NO TYPE OF MODIFICATION that you can make to someone else's samples that will give you any rights to sell or redistribute the samples. No sampling of anything that is not pure synthesis (ie nothing that uses recorded sound for the oscilators, no wavetables synths, no romplers, etc.) is legal.
While sampling and selling samples of synthesizers is OK (no recorded sound is involved in the creation of the sound), it is NOT ok to sample factory patches -- these are copyrighted and forbidden. Sampling and selling of your own patches (that you created) from pure synthesizers is OK though. Note: For the analog synths, with no storage memory, sampling them should be no problem.
Always check any EULAs that may be involved--there may be further restrictions there.
If permission is granted by a company to sample and use sounds, then it is OK.
It is generally a bad idea to include the manufacturer's name, imagery, etc. in any samples, because the name is copyrighted and can lead to legal complications.

Cylinder recordings from the end of 1800's to the 1920's

Yes, a question has been raised as to the copyright with these, they are a derivative of the original which are public domain and these are direct copies, so should still be public domain. If so they'll make great sample material @TGiG thanks for posting.
Thanks for adding new links everyone.

Also for a selection of sample libraries of various types, this is a reasonably good list, http://earmonk.com/free-sample-libraries/
Some great stuff here, but will need some delicate work with the noise print/noise reduction software to make them really usable (for me).
