Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

au ‘exciter’ type fx... is there one?

all the talk on other threads about mastering in or around ios DAWs got me thinking about the mastering chain that Izotope and others use.. eq, multi-band compression, stereo widener, limiter, final eq
there seems one missing piece if trying to replicate it on ios outside of the all in one things like Audio Mastering, Grand Finale etc..
an exciter?? is there an Au plug in that can cover this function that i haven’t heard about??

Not sure if it's what yer after, but Moebius Lab has got one: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/moebius-lab/id1108915352?mt=8

*** LIST OF EFFECTS (NODES) ***
    - EXCITER The Exciter Node distorts the signal below (Saturation) or above (Excitation) a given frequency.
    - etc.

Personally I have to calm my tracks down a bit.

  • They don't seem to crop up very often. iWavestation has excitable filters which stick out as an odd feature, and Moebius Lab does indeed have that exciter node.

I don't really know what I'm doing when things reach that point. Typically, I'll EQ a high shelf bump and drag it down into the lower highs until it catches in a pleasantish way, then roll it back until it's almost undetectable and AB until there's enough-but-not-too-much 'something extra' that things sound a little duller without. Is that similar territory?

[Full disclosure: I've never really understood exciters. Do they add even order harmonics up top or something?]

  • there is very good exciter in Nanostudio.. but obviously not AU but build in fx.. works perfectly on everything with mid snd high frequency content, makes pads more present, snares and hihats more shining.. good stuff

    Exactly :-)

  • I use an old ‘Aphex Bass Xciter’ floor pedal that I have laying around for this purpose.

If all it involves is distorting high or low frequencies then that would be easy enough to rig up with a couple of effects.

nice plugin ... but not ‘exciting’ :)

yes... hadn’t noticed that one in moebius lab.. i guess its possible to rig up a preset that ONLY has that bit active and give it a whirl... depends whether the rest of the inactive moebius lab parts take up much CPU i suppose..
as i already have Moebius you’ve saved me a few LSD’s .. so tanks McMonz!

well not quite... but something close... I had thought that ReAmp might serve as a near substitute but i have to fiddle with it a bit more to find out..

  • Not exactly an exciter but more a saturation plugin, but very good for mastering purposes

  • There use to be an Aphex Exciter app for iPhone long time ago so the DSP code has been ported to IOS but there is no AUv3...

i expect Klevgr. will come up with one eventually.. seems like their ballpark, what with the de-esser etc.. or possibly 4pockets?

  • BBE Sonic Maximizer was also available for iOS back in 2011...

So it seems that some of the companies with enhancer/exciter apps were a bit too early to market and when they didn't sell enough copies they abandoned their apps.

I mean the closet thing to the BBE SonicMax is the 'enhancer' that is part of one of the Cubasis IAP FX pacs.

oh yes, forgotten about that one... and it has two bands... might be worth a go on a basic level.. not enough parameters to baffle anyone there!! :)

The Klevgr GotoEQ is also pretty good at adding enhancing sparkle to sounds :)
