Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Phoenix by Shattered Glass Audio - Released

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/sga-phoenix/id1565520345

We have released Phoenix.
Phoenix for iOS/iPadOS is a port of our AU/VST/AAX version.
SGA Phoenix brings the authentic sound of five analog preamps to your AUv3 compatible host. Each preamp derives its unique sonic character from a different active element (12AX7, 12AT7, and 12AU7 triodes, and J201 and 2N5457 JFET transistors). To achieve the most authentic analog sound, each preamp circuit is simulated in real time using Shattered Glass Audio’s state-of-the-art circuit simulator.

Use Phoenix to add color, warmth, dirt, depth, and vibe to your mixes and masters or as a saturation compressor.

Key features:

  • Authentic analog sound through real-time high-performance circuit simulation.

  • Three preamps featuring triodes 12AX7, 12AT7, and 12AU7.

  • Two preamps featuring JFET transistors J201, 2N5457.

  • Three-band EQ that can be taken out of the signal path or placed either before or after the preamp.

  • Auto Gain

  • Automatic 4x oversampling to control aliasing

  • Wet/Dry mixing.

Phoenix is primarily an AUv3 effect. To use Phoenix as a plug-in, you will need an AUv3 compatible host such as Garageband, AUM, etc.

Phoenix application is there to provide a user manual and a chance to use Phoenix with the microphone input.

    👀 This looks interesting!

Are the preamps listed the names of the ones they’re modeled after?

Good luck with the launching of the app. Any demos?

They are the names of the vacuum tubes and transistors. I have read good things about these desktop plugins BTW. Interesting.

  • I would need to see some sort of demo, but this does look intriguing. I do like the feel saturation compressors give to a mix.

  • Read some really good reviews and grabbed it. I’ll do a short demo real quick. It sounds great

  • Quick demo

  • Demos absolutely! Any reason at all to pull the trigger. Very excited for this; the preamps in Mixbox CS are basically the only reason I’d buy it, as I have basically everything else.

Always good to see new devs coming in iPadOS world!
So, these preamps are initially dedicated to the guitar if I understand correctly?

The original hardware was a tube mic pre. You can find more about Phoenix here, desktop plugin version of the manual
It sounds great on pretty much any material:
Use it on bass to add some distortion to get the bass to be heard on small speakers.
Warm up vocals. Phoenix is mic pre simulation after all. :)
Works great as a guitar preamp/amp
Add weight to kick drums, or a touch of distortion to make the kick audible on small speakers

    Possibilities are endless!

  • This is the kind of plugin I’m after! Gonna take the plunge I think 🤙🏻

  • Something tells me this is a quality release. I like that it has auto gain as well. Has anyone checked it out?

It’s going on the want list.

  • Is it me or the price went from 5 to 10 yesterday ? Can’t remember…

If so then appsliced.co didn’t manage to track it.

Price was $9.99 from the beginning.

  • Off topic, but I’d love this one to be ported by DDMF, as a obsessive tube messer, it’s been fun playing with it in ableton...

Have you tried Barricade or ReelBus? Nobody does saturation/clipping like Toneboosters.
It’s the closest to actual analog that I’ve ever heard.
I hope they make us some proper preamps someday.

It’s more the experimenting with voltages at the terminals and seeing how that affects stuff that gets me, it’s been helpful in understanding some of the real world circuits I’m making, and a different way of looking at things than from the outside of the case - I’m thinking I’m actually going to put pots on place of fixed resistors on this one thing I’m making for various bits as it really changes the sound and dynamics in ways you might not expect...

    Interesting!.

How would this compare to say Beef or Nembrini PS1000 ?.

You mean the compressor flavors in Barricade?. Or also the limiter?. Do you use Barricade without actual limiting or compressing for the clipping?.

I’ve never used PS1000 but it’s quite different from beef imo. Beef is more of an all in one, contemporary sound imo. Phoenix is way more specialised/specific but really excels at what it does. If you’re using beef mainly for the saturation, Phoenix is definitely something to look at. It honestly is a bit of a magic box for me, plenty of sweet spots. It can be super subtle or really break up and get gnarly (especially on drums 🤤).

If you have a desktop DAW, you can download macOS and Windows demo of Phoenix at shatteredglassaudio.com/product/110 and try it yourself.

No. TBCompressor has the compressor flavors.

Barricade has the saturation/clipping flavors and you can set the clipping threshold.

Pull the threshold all the way down to make the saturation more audible so that you can choose the best one for the track and then take it back up to where you want it.

You can also use it with the compressor and limiter switched off and they all have that “internal automatic oversampling” Toneboosters analog magic sound with no aliasing.

Yeah, this forum tends to ramble off a bit…

Welcome to ABF though and congrats on the launch! Great to see you bringing your creations to iPadOS. 👍

I’ve just gone overboard on new releases so need to wait a few weeks but like I said, this is definitely on the want list.

    Thanks for clarifying!

@SGA are these based on real preamps, if so which one(s) specifically? And what plugin configurations might you recommend for vocals in the rap or r&b genres? Also, from what you know, is it Better to use this in conjunction with a solid state or tube mic? Thanks.

Phoenix is based on a real, vintage, mic pre. For the copyright and trademark reasons we cannot specifically say which one. If you choose 12AX7 for the active element you will get the simulation of the original circuit. Other circuits are our (SGA) concoctions. We wanted to see how would the sound change if we change the original tubes (and other elements to make the circuit work properly) with different tubes and transistors. You can find more details on this in the user manual (desktop version is at shatteredglassaudio.com/product/110.

If you want the vocals clean, there are couple of presets for clean tube and clean transistor settings. You can use those presets as a starting point. See which one you like better. OTOH, if you want to add something extra to your vocals, some people add ear candy by heavily distorting vocals and then blending such distorted vocals with the original vocals (parallel processing with the MIX control).
As for the microphone type to use with Phoenix... any microphone type would work.

I know this is going to sound like a tired old cliche but it's all about what sounds good to you.

    Hope this helps.

    @SGA Ok

  • Really, really enjoying Phoenix so far, it’s absolute quality. Everybody grab it so the dev releases more of their plugins to ios

  • I don’t think @SGA will be willing to confirm or deny but there is such a thing as an Altec 1566a tube mic pre.
