Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

USB C hub for iPad Air 4 with four USB ports and PD - recommendations?

Hi there!

Yes, I know similar topics already exist, however I can't seem to find the exact hub that would fulfill my needs. My iPad is iPad Air 4 (2020). I hope that someone has already gone through a similar ordeal and found one that works. I already have this official Apple's adapter: https://x-kom.pl/p/521310-przejsciowka-apple-adapter-usb-c-digital-av.html

My requirements are:

  • power delivery (not sure if 60W would be enough; 100W would be fine),
  • charging the iPad,
  • 4 USB ports for a simultaneous use of:
    a) Elektron Digitone (one port providing power and another for CC compliant audio and MIDI over USB - DT would also act as stereo outs for monitors),
    b) powering and MIDI for Faderfox UC4,
    c) powering and MIDI for either Linnstrument or the upcoming Erae Touch (still waiting for the reviews, it has huge potential).

I wouldn't always use it with DT but then I'd use one of the ports for headphones/audio to monitors. TBH if such hub doesn't exist, I'll ditch the idea of powering DT with it and just use its own power supply. I don't need any other ports such as HDMI or the one for an SD card (but if there's a hub which fulfills my needs I don't mind additional ports). I'd prefer not to have a jack on it as I've read about the iPad having problems with 2 outs handling audio at the same time.

There are a few ones which caught my attention but I'm not certain if they will work well with what I have in mind. I'm currently looking at these ones from Lention but some were some saying they don't charge the iPad:

I really hope somebody knows a working solution. I've wasted waaaaay to much time on this already!:D

  • Why not just use the Apple adapter you already have with a powered USB 3 hub? You can easily get them with up to 7 ports, excellent host for your gear. And power/charge the iPad using the PD port on the Apple adapter. This would be the equivalent of the configuration we use with Lightning devices.

These USB-C hubs/docks seem to be more targeted at laptops, not at our music needs. If you choose one of them, be sure it says USB-C Power Delivery in the description, otherwise, it will not power the iPad. And you may need a new power adapter to power the dock, your gear, and still charge the iPad.

  • I got one of the new “Gen 2” hubs from HyperDrive. Did a quick Google search for promo codes and found one for 20% off.

This has solved all of my connectivity needs

Maybe you're right, I wasn't sure if Digitone would work in such setup. It also becomes a bit bulky too with the connected dongles. I'll keep it in mind, if I don't discover a neat working soution I'll give it a try, thanks:)

Yeah, I know it already, will also buy a proper power adapter.

Somebody also recommended it to me elsewhere and it seems to be the thing I'm looking for! It's a bit expensive but if nobody proposes anything smaller, I'll probably invest in this one. Thank you!

  • UPDATE: I finally went with this one and it serves its purpose without any issues, does everything I asked for: https://lention.com/products/lention-usb-c-multi-port-hub-cbtpc35h Thank you for your help!

Looks like a good choice. Long connecting cable, very similar to a conventional "powered hub", updated to USB-C and PD. I like the focus on USB ports, without too many added features.

Exactly! Still, no issues with the device so that was a good choice:)
