Thoughts For Texans

edited February 2021 in Other

Don’t know who is here from Texas, or if they are able to get online, but seeing this crisis, on top of the health and economic disasters, is totally mind and heart boggling. Governmentally unprepared for these predictable circumstances, as always, the ordinary human takes the brunt from those charged with their welfare.

I’m actually in the process of selling a keyboard to a woman in Texas. Haven’t heard from her in several days. No power, no water, no food... and more freezing weather to come. A catastrophic failure by those in charge... $9000 a megawatt hour, usually $30. No winterization of the grid, no snowplows, deregulation of the power industry and the gov blames AOC and frozen wind turbines.
Shocking and heartbreaking, except for Cruz who skedaddled to Cancun.

This isn’t the first time either. They had a taste in 2011 and did nothing. People will actually get bills for thousands of dollars for a few days electricity.

Comments

  • I emailed @JohnnyGoodyear who lives in Austin and has been without power all week. It sounds like he and his family are muddling through, but it must be a terrible situation to have to live through.

  • Yeah what a nightmare, hope it doesn't last long for all involved...

  • We just moved from TX but my whole family lives there (including in-laws). Today, the temperature will rise and it’s going to get ugly with the pipes thawing out.

  • It appears Texas did secede from the Union. As a lifelong Californian, I've seen
many get frustrated with California's political pressures and leave for Texas to
    avoid state taxes.

With the possible exception of Austin, I'm not impressed by their "free market"
approach to governance. They privatized essential services and seek to do that
on the National level following the "markets in everything" libertarian version
    of freedom.

It will take a series of failures to mitigate risks for people to realize that making the
word safe for capitalism doesn't mean a rosy future.

I hope Texas follows Georgia and Arizona to confront the creeping trend towards
assuming the market will deliver the most effect services in all sectors. I think
some sectors tied to essential human services need to be protected against the
incentive to place profits over human lives.

Ted Cruz is the poster boy for the marketing of greed as a political core value.

  • “I think
some sectors tied to essential human services need to be protected against the

@McD hit it out of the park here.

    Seconded.

  • My mother has been without power in Houston until yesterday. Still without plumbing. The city’s reaction is nothing short of pathetic.

Thanks... this concept is typically called Socialism.
    Greed calls it communism.
    I call it humanism.

  • Four days out. Back connected today. As anyone whose spent more than a few hours living without power/heat in zero temps knows, it's dull and unpleasant, and that's if you're healthy/lucky etc. We are and we're grateful and have had cause to consider our daily circumstances etc etc. And eat all the biscuits in the house.

Agree with the sentiments above as regards the market. Civilized society, whatever its political dogma, must protect its weakest and most vulnerable members. Texas has failed this test. May it learn from the lessons that many have had to suffer through etc.

Thanks much for many kind sentiments from fellow AB members. Took me a few days to get to see them all, but reminded me that connections are beyond geography (if you can get online :).

Finally, and on a musical note, can confirm that my best friend (apart from the warm dog) during this past week has been the OP-1. Was fully charged going in and has a battery that lasts forever :)

I think people confuse this for socialism. Trying to think outside the “box” here. Government does not necessarily need to control it. Distributism is a similar concept that focuses on each citizen helping each other according to need, where the responsibility is on each to bring what they can to the table. Most likely a far cry from American politics. But we do need to start realizing that the government will not take responsibility for all of this even if it is perceived as a good.

Regardless, praying for all of those in Texas and hoping that something changes soon.

  • Texas is an early warning indicator of what it will mean to ignore the lessons of science.
Skeptics and kooks are likely to make the planet a lot less habitable.

And we won't have the resources to go anywhere else.

I won't live to see the worst of it. I guess I just got lucky to have been born when and where I was.

@JohnnyGoodyear glad to hear it! Good looking out with the fully charged OP1.

  • Glad your crew is okay @JohnnyGoodyear and hope the worst of it is over.

  • How to human: Dolly Parton

How NOT to human: Texas Mayor

How NOT to human: Texas Mayor

I'm afraid I can see both points of view. I can see almost any point of view... I don't have to agree with it to see it. People do view the world in their own self-interest. Dolly has prospered and is very good at
business. The Mayor is typical of many small town politicians. Most small towns are going under and
homelessness is on the rise. The Mayor has limited resources to solve a world in disarray. This one
    is using "tough love".

Dolly donated $1 million for Covid-19 research was partly used to fund Moderna's promising Covid-19 vaccine -- something she didn't even know until her name appeared among other sponsors in a preliminary report on the vaccine.

The mayor on the other hand is a "pick yourself up by the bootstraps" kinda guy that reminds me of my
father. I have always been grateful that I never slipped into actual poverty... though I came close once.
"There but for the Grace of God..." ya-da, ya-da.

I'm sure the system was tilted in my favor 'cause I'm a lazy Mutha' and it all worked out just fine... so far.

Ted Cruz went to Cancun because he could afford it... until he realized it was going to impact his career and then he went back to work. Hopefully, the fine people of Texas wake up and fire that self serving douche.

(I figure we get about 2 pages and this channel gets shut down).

I was sorry to see @max commit hari kiri. Lot's of anger in that one and he needs a community like this to vent. Is there a better one?

  • You're a little too generous to the mayor (who has since resigned). The city and the county collect taxes and absolutely owe their constituents. The idea that this man was a public servant who calls his own citizens LAZY — in the middle of a preventable crisis with a death toll — is just amazing.

I eagerly await the "Sixth Street Freeze-Out Sessions" EP.

I would never have voted for him but I know the type. Self-made, smug A-hole.
I just had a confrontation with a neighbor who told me that:

only 15,000 people have really died of Covid-19 the rest had conditions that were responsible for their death and not covid.
Covid has killed his business and hundreds of other businesses and we could have been over this by now by not over-reacting.
There are always flu's floating around and we never did this before.

I said: "It's not a hoax... check out any hospital."

I ended up raising my voice... telling him that the science and the facts do not
support his views. I might have escalated to an F-bomb because he said "There are ladies
present... we can agree to disagree." I went silent. He went away.

I can see his point of view but he's not able to see the damage done to the people who's
lives have been altered in ways that make his loss of income seem like an inconvenience
    in an epidemic.

    @McD
He’s going to be really inconvenienced when climate change gets going and he can’t have things his way.

I can see his point of view but he's not able to see the damage done to the people who's
lives have been altered in ways that make his loss of income seem like an inconvenience
    in an epidemic.

This kind of behavior is willful ignorance and lack of empathy.

Sorry... I find these discussion diverting. But someone will get upset and we'll have to
talk about "bugs in apps for $50, Alex." Like there's some perfect piece of software.
    Boring.

My neighbor's views are reinforced by a disinformation machine that helps him view the
    world as misguided.

My favorite quote from his side of the melee was "I talk to the cops." That's him asserting he has valid knowledge of what's going on in the community.

My wife, the RN, took courses in pathophysiology and most cops know precious little about
    medical matters.

We are all stupid about some topic or other... but some realize the limits of their ability
    to know much with certainty.

  • As a native Houstonian that made it through this storm unscathed (just lost electricity for a few hours in the middle of the night once and lost electricity for 6 hours at noon one day...free time off!) everything said above is true. However, I doubt this plus COVID is enough to get rid of Abbot and Cruz and turn Texas blue. Why? It’s simply because the Democrats are terrible at campaigning here and don’t know what is important to the constituents. A lot of Texans that vote Republican tend to do so because of religion and Republicans know that so they tend to pander to that moreso than actual facts.

For example, we could have 4K video evidence from OANN, NewsMax, Breitbart, and Fox News showing Trump unleashing a massive fart on someone’s farmhouse and knocking it down. Democrats will see that and campaign on “These videos clearly show Trump farted your house down to the ground. Based on these facts, vote Democrat because we will never let that happen.” However, Republicans will see the same exact video and campaign on “God gave Trump the awesome power to unleash such a massive force of hot air that it managed to knock your house down much like what was foretold in the Bible. Behold the power of Jesus. Vote Republican because Trump is clearly the chosen one. Oh and Biden and Nancy hate babies.” Guess who wins the vote?

Despite all of their odd politics though, Texans that live out in the boonies are some of the NICEST people you will EVER meet. Southern hospitality is a very real thing and they don’t care what color, politics, language, whatever you are, they will be nice to you!

  • Is there something that makes sense to do when a community is without water? Like for those of us where it wouldn’t be cost prohibitive to ship some water down to them or what? Maybe a little late now, but some good general rules for when cities are in crisis that the rest of those in the country could do to help without waiting for a decision to be made or the pride to fall.

@trancespotter, very entertaining and illuminating post. Thanks for that one. @McD, why do you think this will be shut down? Our philosopher king is very lenient with this stuff. Besides, since Jan 6 no flat earther has said a word. Silenced by ignominy.

  • when the going gets tough

  • I’ve lived in the south, and while southern hospitality is very real and often genuine, it’s also often backhanded and demeaning

    Example: “Well, bless your heart”

Anyhoo no one asked me for my opinion, so I’ll shuddap now.

PS CancunCruz is still better than TeddyInsurrection (both are living shit tho)

    America hating commies!

  • I am amused that in the mayor’s ignorant post that was posted above, there’s lots of spelling errors. The best is that the weak will form a church...I think that’s what he meant by “the weak will parish.”

When a few members of human race destroy us all, I can say it’s been nice knowing you all on here.

Wishing the best for everyone in Texas.
