Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Download on the App Store

Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

Ipad as midi controller

Does anyone know if there is a way to use the ipad as midi controller/keyboard to control plugins in something like Cakewalk on a PC?

Yes you can send midi out of ipad and there are tons of great apps and plugins for midi. From sequencers standalone and plugins to midi keyboards/pads to completely configurable midi control surfaces and daws that can naturally send out midi, arpeggiators etc. You can use class compliant usb audio and midi interfaces when you hook them on a lightning to usb dongle. Do keep in mind that some audio interfaces need external power supply or they need to be used through powered usb hub(basic usb midi dongles usually dont require powered hub or anything). Ipad can also send midi via bluetooth, so if you get some bluetooth midi receiver on your computer, you can send wireless midi like that easily. If you have midi ports on your pc or interface on the pc, you could hook usb dongle to ipad and usb to midi dongle on it and hook it to your pc. There are also some apps for audio and midi to windows, but they arent very reliable and can be a hassle to set up. With mac you can just hook lightning-usb cable to computer and have audio and midi from and to ipad.

iOS device as MIDI controller is one of the best uses of an iOS device.

You can use BT or wifi (get the free rtpMIDI program on PC). rtpMIDI is super reliable and easy to set up. Audio to Windows as digital out is pretty bad - whereas to Mac it’s pretty easy to do once set up. Analog out to PC is reliable if not quite as good sounding if using the Apple dongle. Using an audio interface is another thing.

If you want MIDI app ideas, let us know. Lots of great things available (controllers and generators). It can help to have either Audiobus and/or AUM if you’re using more than one at a time.

  • Definitely

Unsupported on Windows since 2016 or so - it may or may not work, and can stop working at any time. Studiomux is also crap in my experience (others have a different experience), though Midimux still works - those are also both virtually abandonware, as well. For audio, stick with analog out on iOS->Windows. It's so much less stressful.

  • no love for OSC?

  • Zenbeats can even be used to trigger loops like Ableton using Logic for those of us that can’t upgrade to the latest Logic version. Prolly can do the same with Cakewalk.
