Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

Some iOS App for structuring content (text, images, URLs)?

edited June 2020 in Other

After Drafts got enhanced linking capabilties, i though i could use it to store and retrieve "content", mainly text, images and URLs in some structured way.

But sadly, i still cannot drag and drop images into Drafts.

This is very sad, as Drafts fits all other bills quite well and this would also let me continue my subscription (i have them for Drafts and Infuse).

I did not try Notion, as this is a service and needs an accounts (and possibly subscription too).

I am not happy with DEVONthink ToGo in this regards, as it does not allow to structure contents (no inter-links between documents).

Is there something else?

In summary, i seek this:

Documents of Markdown text with links between them, so that it is possible to jump from one document to another, also would be great to have categories, maybe folders and also tags for which you filter for.

The list of contenders

Note-taking

Outline
Bear
Notebooks 10
FSnotes

Longform texts

Scrivener
iA Writer

Databases

MyStuff2 Pro
Ninox

Others

On Device Wiki
Documents
iThoughts
Obsidian ... but so far not on iOS

Will check even when it´s a service and a subscription

Notion: A service
OneNote: A service, but for me this is OK, as i use the storage anyways, so already pay yearly.
Obsidian: A Roam clone?

Subscriptions, but not a service

Standard Notes
Keep IT
Inkdrop

Already dropped

Agenda: No inter-links or other structure possible
Liquid Text: Only PDFs
Notability: No inter-links
Noto: No inter-links or any other organization beside folders
Dynalist: An Outliner service, with folders, tags, bookmarks and inter-links and it understands Markdown for formatting the tasks, but it is not a Markdown editor and has very limited support for images.
ZoomNotes: Fantastic in nearly anything, but not a Markdown content engine
Joplin: It needs inter-links, drag-and-drop for images, better handling of images and some work on the UI.
Roam Research: Not fully usable on iOS, not drag and drop for links and texts, no upload of many images.

  • I like Notability and Zoom Notes, also Documents by Readable

  • Try Outline https://apps.apple.com/ch/app/outline-your-digital-notebook/id538029496?l=fr

This was of great help during my last training

  • The Notes app? It's pretty great these days, but doesn't have inter-note links

Bear Note does it all though, but it's a subscription app.

Now, i need inter-document links, as i wrote.
Otherwise it is pretty useless as content management system.

I have Bear installed, but am trying to not use more subscriptions.
But will have a look, many thanks!

Just downloaded it and will try.
    Many thanks.

  • @white, this Noto looks interesting.

    I´ve downloaded it, many thanks!

    P.S.

I am still fighting with my Logitech K380 keyboard.
Cannot find the "at" symbol, always need to copy-paste it, and also with the abostroph(?) between "I" and "ve" above.
    Maybe my setup is wrong.

I was not are of inter-document links in Notability, Zoom Notes or Documents.

Is this true for all three of them?
Will need to re-check those in this case.

  • Notion (not the music making app; the organizing app) has moved to free. There’s no longer payment for the service. They sent me an email a few days ago.

Thanks, but as much as i understood, this is a service!

So, it requires an account and all content lies unencrypted on some other peoples servers.
And also may vanish at any moment!

This is something i would never do.

I want my content only my device, not on remote servers.

And even if, like with my sync targets for DEVONthink ToGo, it would need to be encrypted remotely.

So, Notion is totally useless for me.

I respect that. It's a matter of perspective. I use cloud services because it allows me to organize between multiple devices. Ideally I'd like to set up my own local server where I can back stuff up when I want. (Raspberry Pi for example).

Of course, if the work I'm doing is super secret, I still use offline tools. I even disable auto updates on apps because I value stability over new features.

A standalone Wiki app would be the ticket. I looked into some iOS Wiki apps, but the only one that sounded like it didn't require an internet connection isn't available in the US. (Here's the article: https://www.lifehack.org/articles/technology/put-a-wiki-on-your-ipad.html)

That would be a fun iOS development project, I would think. Too bad my iOS coding skills are still a few years away from being up to that task. :s

    Now, that´s an interesting idea!
And yes, a WiKi would nearly be ideal for such things in general.

I remember, that we have Python, PHP and JavaScript available on iOS.
Maybe there is way to run a WiKi locally on those.

Going to read that article, many thanks!

  • I didn't know that about PHP on iOS. Very interesting! I don't think I'd want to have to run a server app just to take notes, but can think of some other uses for it.

I see PHP Win ... is that what you were referring to? https://apps.apple.com/us/app/phpwin/id1157634089

    No, did not know this.

    I meant this: https://apps.apple.com/app/draftcode-offline-php-ide/id593757593

I found some article about this:

I don’t know if it would fit your bill.

    Ah, thanks.
I have this installed, but never used it - it seems so calender-like.
    Will have a closer look!

Even though my expectations from the beginning have been that it would be a year or more before I really get anywhere, it still seems like it's taking forever just to get past the basics. Oh well, I'm not going to give up.

Respect. Let's keep pushing forward to make our ideas into a reality. I'm going through C++ tutorials because I wanna make my app multi platform. Also, because I can't afford a Mac...yet. So far, so good. I'm still reviewing basic codes. Different syntax but it's similar to C for me.

  • Not sure if it is exactly what you are looking for, but LiquidText https://apps.apple.com/cn/app/liquidtext/id922765270?l=en is a pretty damn cool tool for linking notes to documents, linking highlights internally, also linking documents to other documents, you can add images etc too.

  • And you can make projects combining several interlinked documents

  • Bear Notes is very good. Bear is the only subscription app I have and it's well worth $15 per year
It does not have folders but supports multi-level tags which work like folders

  • You might want to look at Scrivener as well. Not sure how difference it is from the desktop version though but might worth a look.

Thanks so much for linking! This looks like the perfect combination of Things and Ulysses that I was looking for, and it has a really generous trial/free mode!

Liquid Text is primarily a PDF App, as much as I can tell.

It cannot even open text files, as far as I can see!
And also, it cannot create any documents at all!

I really have no idea how you could do anything resembling the OP at all in Liquid Text.

But maybe there are hidden features that allow to create Markdown files, add images and links to them and also inter-link them?
Please explain how to do this.

This App was always on my wishlist, but I never bought it.

Would be interesting to see if it can handle both text, URLs and images and allows to inter-link between them.

  • Watching this thread with interest, as I have a pile of chaos in my Notability. I like the private wiki idea @wim. Please let us know if you find what you're after @tja :)

I've just checked in my favorite private, offline database app that can optionally synced with iCloud if you really want that. I have it since years and it's probably one of the few apps that is still updated regularly.
What I like is the freedom in designing the items and hierarchical structure.
It's called MyStuffPro 2 and I bet no-one has heard of it but like it very much.
You can even embed URLs to other notes inside the same database and the URL even works from Safari. You only have to add a "web address" field to your item.

Tapping on the Safari icon will jump to the linked note.
