What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. Mastering with BarkFilter and MagicDeathEyeStereo

Signal chain:
BarkFilter → Compressor → Limiter

(“MagicDeathEyeStereo” compressor and “NoLimits” limiter are my favorites)

In Barkfilter:
Open the Tripleband preset.
Switch OFF “Auto Gain”.
Select the “Threshold” tab.
Unlink ALL of the bands.
Save your preset. (I call it AllBand)

Now for the magic:
In Barkfilter’s “Threshold” tab, raise the first two bands as much as you like. :wink:

Save presets at various levels so that you can switch between them and compare.

Have fun and also remember to save your unmastered songs for future experiments.

    Yes. Try it with your favorite mastering compressor and limiter.

    MagicDeathEye is my favorite compressor at the moment.

  • If you like using mastering reverb, I would suggest placing it AFTER Barkfilter.

    I like using Thafknar with an impulse response of the Lexicon 480’s “Music Club” preset at 3-4%.

    Didn't actually think of this. Thanks for the idea. I'll use Koala Sampler to accomplish the same thing. That way I can have up to 64 tracks to compare and can add effects.
    One shot mode, and using the sampler to rewind, forward, etc. Plus it has the effects I need?

    And it's on Android too? Seriously, thanks for the idea.

    I can change the BPM and tempo to support longer tracks?

    Seriously, I think Koala sampler is an amazing app. And you just showed me a different way of using it.

  • I don't own koala, don't know its capabilities, but I highly doubt that its fx section is up for mastering tasks.
    Also it's not about one shot with transport functions but ability to zoom in/loop/compare certain critical parts, tools for quick navigation etc. Usually you don't need more than few versions to compare.

  • The difference between this and koala etc. is that you can run both tracks side by side and switch instantly without jumping to the beginning of the song every time unless you cut up each version into pieces (verse/chorus/bridge etc.), but that’s just a waste of time.

    With this, you can do proper A/B testing instantly.

    But I can do the same in Koala without chopping it. And I can run up to 64 instances at the same time if I wanted, or assign choke points so it's dependent on another.

    What I do is tap "Edit" and move the slider based on what I want to hear. Then I press the pad and it starts again.

    It's weird the first few times that you use it but once you realize the potential, it's insane.

    And I'm not using all the effects. Reverb, compression, panning is usually enough for me.

    Plus, it actually allows me to do things I was never able to do...remix songs I'm hearing AS I'm hearing it.

    Sounds like too much of a hassle.

    This will also bring a lot of unnecessary ear fatigue and decision fatigue.

    In scatterbrain, you can setup A/B/C/D comparison, but only from one source to 4 sets of processors.

    If your device can handle 4 sets of Barkfilter, MagicDeathEyeStereo (4x oversampling each) and piping them all to a common limiter channel, go for it.

    Also do you put these three plugins on the masterbus in say Cubasis or do you mix down a track to a wave file and then important that one wave file into a daw on its own and then apply these three FX? Sorry for all the questions .

    I would recommend first mixing down to wave.

    Master in a separate session.

    You will have more CPU available for both processes.

    Also, always keep the unmastered mixdown track in your archive.

    My vote goes to MagicDeathEyeStereo.
    It has oversampling handy EQ features, external sidechaining and also wet/dry control for parallel compression.

    While at the loudest part of the track, I set the threshold to where the RMS meters show around -12db.

    Besides the threshold control I normally keep the rest at default.

    Try raising the attack to around 45ms for transients to escape the limiter and get chopped by the clipper if you prefer the sound of clipped transients.
