Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

  • @kobamoto You’re welcome 😎

  • Wow @thesoundtestroom
You own an H9? I was yesterday actually considering one but I think i will end up with a TimeLine (by Strymon). Don’t think the H9 is too user friendly too quickly set something different up and stuff. Although the 51 different algorithms sound really intriguing;)

  • I think the H9 is user-friendly, when used with the H9 Control app.

I did take the time however to learn how to use it in Expert Mode, which is the mode you have to learn if you want to access all 10 params of the currently loaded algorithm without an iPad. We played a gig at a festival in Las Vegas and I didn't want to rely on being able to bust out an iPad if there was a tweak that had to be done on the spot to an H9 patch. Expert Mode you could argue is not as user friendly as the app.

  • Exactly what I mean. The timeline (as the big sky) is wonderfully thought through and has a great balance between knobs and menu diving.
World love to play around with one though.

One quick question: you cannot stack algorithms right? Meaning, using pitch modulation in combination with dual delay in a blackhole context?!?

Correct, only one algorithm at a time on H9.

Eventide tries to get around this by offering multi-effect algorithms - like PitchFactor algorithms that combine pitch shifting with delay, UltraTap algorithms that throw in some basic reverb, Space algorithms like ModEchoVerb that throw in some modulation and echo (delay) to go with reverb, etc.

Eventide Eclipse lets you use 2 algorithms at the same time.

but for production uses what's the H9's closest rival in a similar form factor?

  • edited July 2019

Physical form factor? Nothing really. Empress pedals are taller, wider, but take less depth. Strymons come in a variety of form factors. EHX pedals come in an even wider variety of form factors.

The Meris pedals appear to all have the same form factor but I've never seen one in person.

  • been looking to no avail, on another note been intrigued by the enzo and mercury 7 for a while now.. I really like the meris sound.

  • Chris Jacques made a nice harmonic trem patch for Empress Zoia. Too busy at the moment but will eventually download Harmadillo for H9 and compare to the Zoia patch.

  • Thanks mate! I think the H9 is not for me the - I would probably need two or more to get there :)

    @GovernorSilver

Yeah , when I said "physical form factor" I suppose was being redundant because form factor by definition - well this definition - is all about physical specs:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Form_factor_(design)

I originally got my H9 to use with my Korg MS-20 Mini and other analog synths - with the idea that I was going to sequence program changes, effects param changes, etc. from an iPad sequencer. In turn, I only got the H9 because somebody offered me a nice discount on the H9 Max.

I have yet to achieve that ambition. Got distracted by other stuff. So far my use of the H9 has been unimaginative - just to process violin and guitar with weird reverbs and stuff. I typically put it in the effects loop of my Boss Katana 100 amp.

The Katana is kind of a sleeper. Peeps compare it unfavorably to AxeFX, Kemper, Line 6 Helix, etc. but for so little money, you get an amp with virtual Boss pedal FX and the amp modeling is pretty good for the money too. Most models come with an FX loop so you can stick your favorite specialist pedals in there, and set up the loop to be whereever you want it to be in your signal chain, with choice of series vs. parallel. Thus, I use the Katana for its own overdrive, distortion, modulation FX, etc. in addition to the H9. I even use the Katana reverbs, which are of course the Boss pedal reverbs - not as mindblowing as the Space algos on the H9 but they don't need to be, for obvious reasons.

the Zoia is another definite interest, looking forward to what you think of your comparison. Being that the Zoia is kind of a first of, I'm worried that if I spring for one they'll offer something much better on version two with all they learned from the first time out

religiously... as well as Knobs, Devon blue Whitaker, a bunch of pedals, data choir, collector emitter etc..

I don’t get the h9 appeal. Except for ‘maybe’ live shows. Lame interface (almost zero knobs), can’t stack fx and sounds that are 99% achievable (or better...) ITB for less and multi-instance. I’d rather buy two Chase bliss pedals than the h9 max...

but which two chase bliss pedals combined cover the H9?

I feel very differently when experimenting with Fx on the computer than when using my pedal set up, for me those differences become important when you're doing something for hours on end.

If they do I might buy that one too. Might sell my Infinite Jets to make room for it, space wise and money wise. That plus my present-day Zoia would deliver even more options. One can be sequencer/synth and other FX only. Or two synths. Or both doing FX, just different ones, in parallel.

Never thought I'd end up owning both H9 and Zoia. I now have way more options in a compact rig than I ever thought I'd have.

Was going to get a Strymon BigSky, but then found that deal on an H9 Max that brought the price down way too close to the BigSky. I'm sure hard-core Strymon fans would have still turned that deal down but I thought the versatility of having the PitchFactor, TimeFactor, etc. algos on board too would be a better fit for me.

Wasn't interested in the Zoia at first. Max/PD in a box stuff doesn't appeal in general. But then I watched workflow videos, and more importantly I saw and heard glitchy looping patches and dynamic envelope responsive patches that appealed to me.

thanks for the tip will have a looksy

  • If you need both multi-effects and an amp - and can't afford an AxeFX, Kemper or higher end Line 6, the Boss Katana line delivers good value for the money - except Katana 50 because it has no FX loop.

  • I have a few friends with H9s that swear by them, so it's been on my radar for awhile. I just think that for me personally, if I'm going to go with a hardware effects unit, I'm probably going to want to use something that lets me use more effects at a time. I actually just returned a Strymon Volante because the HX Stomp's Space Echo give me the same sort of vibe and it was in the same box I use for my effects anyway. The Timeline is getting close to being sold too, I mainly use it for the Ice delay mode, and Stomp again has something similar enough for my needs.

Anyway. I really think the H9 is a sweet little box, I just know if I get one then I'm going to want two. Or three :)

  • The H9 does allow multiple effects to be used at once, depending on the algorithm you select. There are some obviously named multi-effects algos like PitchFuzz, SpaceTime, and ModEchoVerb. Then there are less obvious ones like the PitchFactor algos that actually have delay as well as pitch shift, UltraTap algos that actually include basic reverb, etc.

It doesn't allow as much flexibility for selecting and combining individual types of FX like compressor, overdrive, delay, reverb, flanger, etc. as on popular multiFX units by Boss, Line 6, etc. I get why this would turn some people off.

Another reason I got my H9 Max, aside from the discount, is that at some point I can pick up an H9 Core, which costs about half as a Max, and use the algorithm sharing feature to turn the Core into another Max. Up to 3 Cores can be used with this feature. I probably won't buy 3 Cores but I could see myself getting at least one for processing synths or something.

  • Good to know you don't have to max out each unit but they can share the same license.

  • I think you can actually max up 4 units with one MAX H9 device

  • What’s next from Eventide?
Could it be an iH9 Max AUv3 for $199 :)

They're getting less predictable. They released the Rose pedal and then came out with these IOS apps, none of which anyone saw coming.

Just got their Powermax power supply after getting tired of cutting power with the slightest accidental bump of a power strip. Sweet upgrade over the OneSpot.

Yep, one H9 Max is enough, you can add an H9 Core for $400 and it will act like a second Max.
An even cheaper solution for having multiple quality FX is combining an H9 Max with a good multi-FX pedal like the Zoom MS-100BT with Blackhole-style reverbs, lots of modulation FX and great delays, up to six of them usable simultaneously, and I'll leave the most challenging FX to the H9 Max. The 100BT is one of the few digital pedals that has quite acceptable distortion and amp sim algorithms considering the low (second-hand) price.
