Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Best app for growling sax

The boys want to play some Springsteen and Surf Rider at our local jam. Lots of growling sax in these - I would appreciate some recommendations. The other sounds I am looking for are symphony. I’m looking to bring 1 kybd (tone wheel clone) and the iPad Air 3 to lighten the mat of gear to haul.

  • Thumbjam has an alto sax in there somewhere, not sure as to the extent of the 'growl' potential.

  • other option:
( cheaper and more flexible )
BS-16i or any other sf2 player
    https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/27054/what-ios-apps-can-import-sf2-soundfonts-bs-16i-does-i-know-but-others
and a growling sax sf2. (google for it)

  • Thank-you, I just listened to S Sax and the symphony sf2. I also sent a msg to the Bismarck developer regarding live performance use, layering and setting up presets for quick recall. Waka_x I will look for that growling sax sf2.

How well does iFretless emulate sections like Tower of Power, Memphis Horns, the Stax and Muscle Shoal studio sections? This is not for recording as I have East West, Vintage etc for that. This is for jams. I just don’t want to haul a Fantom X6, JD900, Speakeasy Vintage Tube Stereo Pre, mixer etc to these.

I've NEVER found an app/synth that can emulate horns that doesn't sound like an app/synth emulating horns. The most convincing I've heard is Sensual Sax, but that' pretty far from growly, and also pretty far from the horn sections you mention.

The only way I've accomplished this is by using loops of horn sections in tunes. I had some Dr. Rex loops back when I was using Reason 5 that I was able to pitch shift and manipulate a bit to my needs.

If you find something convincing, I'm all ears.

  • Have you checked Heavy Brass?

Heavy Brass by Christian Schoenebeck d/b/a Crudebyte
    https://itunes.apple.com/ar/app/heavy-brass/id1037802910?l=en&mt=8

  • This is the best I’ve been able to get (so far) from Heavy Brass

  • The best sex samples our coming out soon… They are a specially designed for MPE devices

  • Is that the TEC wind controller if so with bite?

  • Can you connect a wind controller to iOS? Those SWAM sounds are desirable! Coming to iOS? I would buy a Seabord Block for that.

  • Not sure about the wind controller but this works well with the Roli products including the light block or whatever it is… Yes it is coming to iOS… They will be doing it on their own as opposed to releasing it through Roli

  • Wow, @audiobussy, that is great news. Thanks! Seaboard Block is a two octave keyboard with smaller keys and no mod wheels as compared to Seaboard Rise.

Sure. The controller he mentioned is a MIDI controller.

  • Thanks @espiegel123, the new horizons keep coming.

  • I don’t try to do any serious sax emulations anymore. I find the fault is usually not the samples or other controls as much as the fact that we are not sax players. By the time you use different embrouchers, attacks, tones, pitch bends, horn phrasing, etc....... all things sax players do after years of training, there is little left for performing your other duties as a player and performer.Just my experience.

Yep - absolutely agree. I'd rather just do something on a synth that sounds similar - saxy, if you will - to imply a sax or other horn than try and recreate one. We're getting closer and closer with technology, but there's nothing that's QUITE there yet for my tastes.

Clearly I'm super picky with horns....

I know Sample Tank - what is AU Fx? Searched the App Store and nothing came up.

I know what you mean about getting all the articulations etc to emulate a real sax player. My cousin rec’d The Order of Canada for Music and The Arts, he is a jazz sax player, composer and arranger - worked with some of the all time greats and was the musical director for the Jackson 5 tv show back in the day among a host of other things. My father was a jazz pianist whose friends included Bill Evans, Miles etc. I literally grew up in this, my parent’s were likely in a very small minority of musicians that owned a house in the 50’s and on. I would wake up Sunday morning with Oscar Peterson, Bill etc jamming in our bsmnt until brkfst was served. They would come over after the clubs closed. I played with rock bands in clubs starting at 13 ducking under the organ keybed when the police would enter the club. It was more of a courtesy hide as they knew that I was underage, they also knew my family and that I behaved (for the most part). Spring tour schedule was always fun as by law there had to be a tutor with me - don’t remember seeing one once we left and they would have written my essays and tests as I don’t recall ever doing one. For the group of guys I am now jamming with I once again am the youngest b about 10 yrs. Anyone interested in Beatles touring and the Sgt Pepper album would love to talk with the drummer as he is a retired OPP officer who was on the Beatles protection detail when they came to Toronto. He has told us quite a few stories including how poorly treated “Sgt Pepper” was treated after the album came out with Paul wearing the OPP badge.

Sorry for going OT but I greatly appreciate everyone’s input as Going this route with iPad apps for live use is very new to me and am learning. Last week I brought a Fantom X6 to use as cntrlr for the IPad Air 3 using the included GarageBand organ, strings, blues horns and bass sounds. I would rather take a Mojo 61, Viscount Legend Solo or Hammond Sk1 as controller and organ. Then use the iPad for strings, horns, synth etc.

Once again thank-you all for your insight and advice in this it is greatly appreciated.

  • Wow, what an experience! Envy!

That’s quite an accomplishment, virtual sex with an MPE controller makes fingering our surfaces even more satisfying and goes above and beyond what the Sensual Sax app tried to achieve.

Just looked at the Roli Lightpad Block, I’ve never played a Roli kybd so not sure how it plays. The Lightpad reminds me somewhat of the ribbon controller on the old CS80 which I loved when it worked. I just wish that the single unit was larger, but it would easily sit on top of a kybd to use when req’d. Any idea when the Swam IOS versions will be out and prices?

  • Consider the Seaboard Block @gdh.

  • Btw way, @gdh, my best attempt at a virtual Sax. Sensual Sax plus iFretless Sax. About halfway through when the horns come in.

  • Consider the Lightpad.

Great for Push/Linnstrument stuff AND drum pads. And it’s configurable... and looks cool

    Virtual ‘Sex’ while fingering.. 😬😊

Looking forward to the SWAM products.. Seems physical modeling and iOS were meant for each other..
