chaos agents and arsonist always get a lot done because they don't have to build anything or bring anyone together, all they do just divide and destroy

  • Maybe we could elect a goat,

Or maybe we could elect a boat.

I could elect it here or there,

    I could elect it anywhere.

I’ve been reading too much Dr Seuss with my kids.

In 2020 we may end up electing Kanye. Who knows! Maybe Grumpy Cat. Does it matter anymore?

I am not very political. I’m pretty jaded though :)

    'Trouble Every Day' 1965

"Well I'm about to get sick
    From watchin' my TV
    Been checkin' out the news
Until my eyeballs fail to see
I mean to say that every day
    Is just another rotten mess
And when it's gonna change, my friend
    Is anybody's guess

So I'm watchin' and I'm waitin'
    Hopin' for the best
Even think I'll go to prayin'
Every time I hear 'em sayin'
That there's no way to delay
    That trouble comin' every day
    No way to delay
    That trouble comin' every day

    Wednesday I watched the riot...
Seen the cops out on the street
Watched 'em throwin' rocks and stuff
    And chokin' in the heat
    Listened to reports
    About the whisky passin' 'round
    Seen the smoke and fire
    And the market burnin' down
    Watched while everybody
On his street would take a turn
To stomp and smash and bash and crash
And slash and bust and burn

And I'm watchin' and I'm waitin'
    Hopin' for the best
Even think I'll go to prayin'
Every time I hear 'em sayin'
That there's no way to delay
    That trouble comin' every day
    No way to delay
    That trouble comin' every day

    Well, you can cool it,
    You can heat it...
'Cause, baby, I don't need it...
Take your TV tube and eat it
'N all that phony stuff on sports
    'N all the unconfirmed reports
You know I watched that rotten box
Until my head begin to hurt
    From checkin' out the way
The newsman say they get the dirt
Before the guys on channel so-and-so

    And further they assert
    That any show they'll interrupt
To bring you news if it comes up
They say that if the place blows up
They will be the first to tell,
Because the boys they got downtown
Are workin' hard and doin' swell,
And if anybody gets the news
    Before it hits the street,
They say that no one blabs it faster
    Their coverage can't be beat

    And if another woman driver
    Gets machine-gunned from her seat
They'll send some joker with a brownie
And you'll see it all complete

So I'm watchin' and I'm waitin'
    Hopin' for the best
Even think I'll go to prayin'
Every time I hear 'em sayin'
That there's no way to delay
    That trouble comin' every day
    No way to delay
    That trouble comin' every day

    Hey, you know something people?
    I'm not black
    But there's a whole lots a times
I wish I could say I'm not white

Well, I seen the fires burnin'
    And the local people turnin'
On the merchants and the shops
Who used to sell their brooms and mops
    And every other household item
Watched the mob just turn and bite 'em
And they say it served 'em right
Because a few of them are white,
And it's the same across the nation
    Black and white discrimination
    Yellin' "You can't understand me!"
'N all that other jazz they hand me
In the papers and TV and
    All that mass stupidity
That seems to grow more every day
Each time you hear some nitwit say
He wants to go and do you in
Because the color of your skin
    Just don't appeal to him
(No matter if it's black or white)
Because he's out for blood tonight

You know we got to sit around at home
    And watch this thing begin
But I bet there won't be many live
    To see it really end
'Cause the fire in the street
Ain't like the fire in the heart
And in the eyes of all these people
Don't you know that this could start
On any street in any town
In any state if any clown
Decides that now's the time to fight
For some ideal he thinks is right
And if a million more agree
    There ain't no Great Society
As it applies to you and me
    Our country isn't free
And the law refuses to see
If all that you can ever be
    Is just a lousy janitor
Unless your uncle owns a store
You know that five in every four
Just won't amount to nothin' more
Gonna watch the rats go across the floor
And make up songs about being poor

    Blow your harmonica, son!"

    'Dumb All Over' - 1981

"Whoever we are, wherever we're from
We shoulda noticed by now, our behavior is dumb
And if our chances expect to improve
It's gonna take a lot more, than trying to remove the other race
Or the other whatever, from the face
    Of the planet altogether

They call it THE EARTH, which is a dumb kinda name
But they named it right, cause we behave the same...
    We are dumb all over
Dumb all over, yes we are
Dumb all over, near an' far
Dumb all over, black an' white
People, we is not wrapped tight

Nerds on the left, nerds on the right
Religious fanatics on the air every night
Saying the Bible tells the story
Makes the details sound real gory
About what to do if the geeks over there
Don't believe in the book we got over here

You can't run a race without no feet
An' pretty soon there won't be no street
For dummies to jog on or doggies to dog on
Religious fanatics can make it be all gone
It won't blow up an' disappear
It'll just look ugly for a thousand years...

You can't run a country by a book of religion
Not by a heap or a lump or a smidgen
Of foolish rules of ancient date
Designed to make you all feel great
While you fold, spindle and mutilate
Those unbelievers from a neighboring state

TO ARMS! TO ARMS! Hooray! That's great
Two legs ain't bad unless there's a crate
They ship the parts to mama in
For souvenirs: two ears - Get Down!
Not his, not hers, but what the hey?
The Good Book says: "It's gotta be that way!"
But their book says: "REVENGE THE CRUSADES!!!!..."

With whips an' chains an' hand grenades..."
TWO ARMS? TWO ARMS? Have another and another
Our God says: "There ain't no other!"
Our God says: "It's all okay!"
Our God says: "This is the way!"
It says in the book: "Burn and destroy....."
An' repent, an' redeem, an' revenge, an' deploy
An' rumble thee forth to the land of the unbelieving scum on the other side
Cause they don't go for what's in the Book
    An' that makes 'em BAD
So All, verily we must choppeth them up
    Or stompeth them down
Or rent a nice French bomb
Ssssssssss........ to poof them out of existence
While leaving their real estate just where we need it
To use again for temples in which to praise OUR GOD
"Cause He can really take care of business!"

And when His humble TV servant
With humble white hair and humble glasses and a nice brown suit
And maybe a blond wife who takes phone calls
Tells us it's okay to do this stuff, then we're supposed do it
Cause if we don't do it, we ain't gwine up to hebbin!
(Depending on which book you're using at the time...)
Can't use theirs... it's all lies...... Gotta use mine... Ain't that right?
That's what they say -- Every night... Every day...
Hey, we can't really be dumb, if we're just following God's Orders
After all, He wrote this book here an' in the Book He says:
"He made us all to be just like Him,"
So... If we're dumb... Then God is dumb...
An' maybe even a little bit ugly on the side

DUMB ALL OVER – a little ugly on the side
DUMB ALL OVER – a little ugly on the side
DUMB ALL OVER – a little ugly on the side"

  • Hi guys, thank you for the relatively restrained comments. I have been thinking about what upset me so about the interchange I posted. It is this... I realize I would be horrified to read posts on hate based web sites, but I would not be surprised. Finding it in the comments on YouTube (albeit about FOX reporting) it feels like it is a virus that has been released in the general population, and possibly a very contagious one.

I asked that folks refrain from naming names. Of course that is hard because of the pent up frustration and anxiety many of us feel. But the reason I said that is because our great leader is not, IMO, a cause
(Tho he does exacerbate) but an effect. His election was the result of many influences (including foreign), but underneath it all was a cry to be heard by those that consider themselves overlooked or ignored by power and wealth. The president did invite the fringe elements in and gave more traction to violent extremists, but the root cause is still the failing of capitalism to reign in the more psychotic tendencies of mammoth corporations and the concentration of 90% of the world’s wealth into the hands of a few.

As to the influence of one person on global affairs, I posit what if he were removed? Then the leader of the free world would be someone with the potential to be just as bad or even worse. No, I do not believe that a person arises and that he or she changes things. I believe things have deeply changed in America that gives rise to a person(s) who reflects that shift.

Gratefully, I see no reason for this thread to be shut down. There have been provocative posts but no one seems to be having the typical “you expletive” reaction. We can only control ourselves, and in what @Michael has created and we, as a community, have developed there seems to be a rising consciousness and civility that is to be applauded IMO.

  • @Paul16, thanks for the zap of political and religious truth. Just as true today as a half century ago, maybe even more so. However, artistic critical observation of obvious societal trends, though stimulating to action, perhaps, is not an answer in itself. I guess the question is, what can we do about it, if anything?

& there's the burning question ... civil disobedience ? non violent direct action ?

the established duality of left/right party politics increasingly appears as two wings of the same bird

personally, I lost any faith in the political process some years ago :|

Funnily enough I responded, finally, to my nephew's wife who likes to post racist memes on her Facebook page. For the sake of family unity I tend to keep it zipped, but sometimes you just have to say something.

Yesterday she reposted a familiar one about Muslims objecting to the poppy day we have here for war veterans, and that the British Legion having to respond to their complaints for it to be banned. Though it's not written in such restrained terms.

It's a complete load of bollocks, and has been discredited by the British Legion themselves, who confirmed it's created by right-wing groups on Facebook, to stir up racial and religeous hatred.

I didn't say anything in reposnse to her post, but just posted a link to a website explaining it's false, in the hope she might take it down. Obviously she hasn't, and it's been shared and 'liked' by a whole bunch of her racist friends.

Obviously the fact that it's false isn't an issue for her, it just confirms her own bigoted viewpoint.

Youtube or newsite comments are just graffiti. I ignore them like I would ‘fuck you @#$&;%*’ written in a gas station washroom. It is just easier for people to write more words now and point them at an article but the mentality is completely the same for me. I don’t think ignoring digital graffiti is dangerous but taking it too seriously as some sort of major sign of the times, what have you, could be. Lets retaliate and form a movement based on graffiti?

People are for the most part chill and cool and want to get along, this forum reflects that to me and even now a thread that a couple years ago would have spiralled into being heated and closed much quicker is just motoring along at a casual pace with no major drama. I think people are just seeing digital graffiti more for what it is now, at best a curiosity but mostly noise to just be ignored.

    Good point

  • @barabajagal, your point about gun violence is well taken. Compare the US to New Zealand. One week after the first incidence there is legislation in NZ banning assault weapons. Now that is civilized civilization.

@lukesleepwalker, indeed, the US has all the earmarks of an empire in decline. Unwinnable foreign wars, disenfranchisement of the middle class, division and concentration of wealth. I watched a documentary which described the Romans at their height and their depiction of their conquered enemies as noble opponents who fought with honor. At the end the description changed to weak, ignoble creatures worthy only of extermination. Sound familiar?

@Chaztrip, you are entitled to your opinion, of course. But is it an opinion or a belief? Can you really deny the multitudes of lies, and improprieties (the revisionist Barr's summary just refuted by Mueller himself, the ten or so cases of overt obstruction, the failure to address proven Russian interference in 2016 and ongoing into 2020, the security clearances of his nepotistic assigns, the ongoing and denied business dealings with Russia and on and on and on). Can you defuse the hate mongering xenophobia and sexism he has openly stimulated? The use of autocratic tools: demonizing or defaming opponents (Dangerous Don, Divisive Don, Demented Don, Don the don, Don the Duper, Humpty Trumpty and so many others that real politicians refrain from actually using because there is still civility in places), gaslighting, dominating the news cycle with distractions, contradictions and purposeful chaos, ridicule of the press and visiting contempt on all democratic institutions in an attempt to dismantle them, defeat the rule of law, irrevocably damage the system of checks and balance, failed attempts and successes in using the judiciary, justice department and military forces for his own self interest personally and politically, and ultimately for waging war on the constitution and the system it created and Americans have so painfully preserved for 250 years, etc, etc, etc).

The only thing going for the US these days is the economy, and that prosperity (tho most benefits go to wealthy corporations and individuals) is funded by what? A trillion and a half dollars in debt for future generations to deal with, if they can. If that money were simply distributed to the 150,000,000 or so families in the US it would be what? $100,000 per family?(check my math on that). And what does the average family get ... $6000? And this year they cannot even find that because it was deducted drip by drip from their paychecks. And what did corporations do? Did they reward their workers? Did they invest in the surrounding communities? Did they reinvest in infrastructure? Nope. They bought back stock while farmers in the Midwest saw their soybean crops trashed by unnecessary trade wars. This is Our leader's greatest accomplishment, along with scaring the shit out of US allies, embracing every successful autocrat in the world (he hates losers, even autocratic losers), causing further economic pain to rural farmers and businesses in the Midwest, not bringing back Bethlehem PA, not even understanding that tariffs are paid for with higher prices at home, encouraging divisiveness and hatred, openly tampering with and threatening witnesses, compromising national security and soldier's lives with tweets about Syrian withdrawal, shutting down the government and throwing millions of lives and small business into life threatening peril, and, of course, his greatest achievement... not getting Mexico to pay for an imaginary wall he has mesmerized his base into thinking it is now "finish the wall" instead of building it when not a thing has been done that is new construction.

I know I asked not to personalize the topic, but that seems to have been ignored, so I am more than happy to join in.... in a civilized fashion.

So @Chaztrip... in a reasoned way, will you reply to what I have said? Here you have a great opportunity to express yourself with cogent arguments and pertinent examples to make your point and even change people's minds. As I said, I watch Fox News. When I hear truth on that network as I have from Chris Wallace and especially Judge Andrew Napolitano it is readily apparent. I have hopes you can make your truth as apparent and ease our minds as to the deterioration of decency we are now witnessing in the US and abroad. Thanks!

  • @db909... I don't think space is an issue on a digital forum. However, you are free to move on if it does not suit you. Common civility on this forum, and, in the US, the first amendment guarantees your right to speak... or to shut up. @AudioGus does make a good point. That things have evolved here when civil argument can be engaged in peacefully. I don't think he is suggesting the conversation should not be had. I think he is admiring a somewhat elevated consciousness here that has evolved over time. In other words, instead of someone insulting you @db909 for your opinion you can speak your mind and be heard. This is rare and to be encouraged.
And again, feel free to speak or not, so long as it is with a civil tongue and not trolling for a cheap thrill.

I watched a documentary which described the Romans at their height and their depiction of their conquered enemies as noble opponents who fought with honor. At the end the description changed to weak, ignoble creatures worthy only of extermination. Sound familiar?

Interesting you mention this - I cited this exact thing earlier in the thread. It's a good thing we study history so we don't repeat ourselves, right?

    🤦‍♂️

@db909...

My main point was that these one liner anonymous comments are not to be taken too seriously (leave that to the FBI if need be) and I think things are chilling out in a way where those who are easily inflamed by them are almost as suspect of having some of the same mental hygiene traits as those who write them. We can find any scrap on the internet to reinforce our worldview and looking to comments as a valid reference point is now starting to sound like someone reading tea leaves or rolling bones. Sure, forum chatter should be another micro level up, but it is still hampered by ultimately just being a sports bar like swarm where goal posts fly around at the speed of light (trying not to mix my metaphors as much, life is growth).

Anyway I would rather politics never come up on a forum that does not focus on it at all so my vote is kill the thread. Sure it is marked OT but true or not, shit attracts flies. I actually thought there was a stern 'no politics' rule here.

To be fair, the original intent here was apolitical - attempting to discuss the state of (or lack of) intelligent discourse in the world, but I agree that given the current situation this topic will inevitably devolve into a political rant.

I agree @AudioGus - time to put this thread to bed while we're all still being reasonably polite. @LinearLineman it's clear you and I are on the same page, and I value your views on these topics. I'd be happy to continue this conversation privately if you'd like.

The original post was talking about politics. My understanding was that the whole subject (the noun of politics) was to be avoided. I did not mean to imply that the verb was being engaged in.

Anyway, maybe I am a knee jerk, hard line leaner in this regard. ;)
