Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

I almost always use vocals that’s why audio is important to me. It’s great that it may already be implemented.

Users use audio clips in the Slate performance pads. These clips can be realllllllllly long, so the use is limited only by the imagination, I think. Then trigger the clips in the sequencer or play them live on the pads. Not true Audio Tracks, but for now... not bad.

Thanks, that's an doable workaround until real audio tracks is released.

My post misread the room. It meant only to slightly temper the over-the-top enthusiasm for the app. To me? I see that video and I'm surprised people are totally psyched. I don't want to pee in the punchbowl. I don't think I've EVER seen an iOS app video that excites me (even the TriqTraq one with the metal straw is dopey).

And while I've completely derailed this lovefest for NS2, can I ask (as long as we're talking about musicmaking commercials): What's up with the puffy sleeves on the guy playing the Roli Seaboard??

You for sure are entitled to your opinion. So have at it. I don't mind opinions based on the fact that you've used product X and don't like feature Y, but if you want to come into a specific NS2 thread and just kind of gripe about a preference based thing like its product video and then continue to say (paraphrased) "I hate all product video's", then your opinion immediately loses value to me. You didn't even comment on anything you SAW in the video, which is what is revealing the most important parts of the product. What did you actually get out of the content of the video OTHER than the song sucked :\

Some people just won't take yes for an answer. Jeez.

    Should be called MEGAstudio!

I was really digging the low end in the demo video.
Really nice bass coming from that synth (or maybe those were samples?).

Yeah this is what I feared too, but maybe the obsidian is a neurofunks dream?!
I am curious if i need another pack of dem presets for my DnB hunger/needs

As a sound design enthusiast for over 20 years I can tell you the bass on the pure synthesis options of Obsidian is stellar.

The vast majority of what you heard that doesn't sound acoustic is synthesis, not sample based (although even some acoustic sounding stuff was made possible by pure physical modeling options in the synth).

You can make anything with this synth.

Why do you feel the need to slightly temper other people’s enthusiasm for something ?

You spoke in another post about how else are you to judge the app, perhaps don’t judge the app is the answer, possibly wait until you have used the app.

As others have pointed out, why come on a thread about an app you have no use for, that no one has used yet , just to be negative. This lovefest , as you call it , is hurting no one.

It would seem that the majority of the forum members here, are mature, experienced music makers, I can’t imagine that lives will be destroyed if the app doesn’t turn out to quite as good as some are expecting, your concern for them if that turns out to be the case though is very touching :)

Incredibly phat , Rich and detailed sound . Amazing low end as @CracklePot said . What a sound engine!!!

  • coming soon support for ipad pro? odd it isnt supported out of the box.

  • It’s supported, just not optimized fully yet. The dev says he doesn’t own a Pro yet, but is optimistic about getting one if the app earns enough.

Why the surprise? This stuff takes time, and he’s trying to stick to his deadline that people have been hounding him over.

This is one guy, not Microsoft, Korg, or Apple.

  • Re: iPad Pro support. Matt is a perfectionist.

I'm sure it works just fine out of the gate, just there may be some UI improvements in order. He kind of misspoke and made people think it wasn't supported when in fact it isn't entirely optimized as the previous comments stated.

  • This looks great from the video!

@mindscaper’s YouTube comment gave me a good laugh as well! 😂

  • Optimized for Pro would be nice. An app this big, developed over years by one person, should realistically evolve at a slower pace than users would like. As far as I can tell without actually putting the app through its paces on iOS, what the buyer is getting for their money is a ridiculously good deal. Despite plans for new functionality in the future having been revealed, the developer owes nothing else. I'll be buying it for what it is; anything else is gravy.

  • What's neurofunk?

I know for a fact Matt is committed to improving it indefinitely. He's obsessive. He'll listen to everything and try to stuff in everything he can on a consistent basis.

It is a "big" app but it will absolutely continue growing for quite some time.

Regarding optimization. I believe it's likely almost all to do with UI optimization, as is what's mainly keeping the iPhone version in queue.

The sound engine is ridiculously efficient. Some of us who've been using the app have ran out of ideas before running out of CPU. In fact, none of us have come close to running out of CPU. I haven't yet seen a serious track which goes over 60% usage. (that's dozen-multiples of tracks all with fx inserts, real time automation and all with a <3ms input delay).

6 years of effort isn't always in what you see in front of your eyes (though it's interesting to note all the things people are noticing).

  • @StevePAL thanks man for your insight. Cool to hear that. When I first saw the screenshots I thought this looks like a iOS version of serum or massive which seem to be the state of the art synth for DnB, EDM and thereof... Most of Neurofunkbass consist of resampling techniques (see below) that why I was worried. But I believe the obsidian will be pretty capable...

    @mrufino1 said:

Its a sub division in the Drum and Bass Genre such as liquid drum and bass. Its pretty sick so not everyone’s cup of ( @JohnnyGoodyear ) coffee ;)
If you want you can check out this one here: https://www.loopmasters.com/genres/79-Bass/products/6318-ARTFX-Neuro-Bass-Patches-Vol-1

Mostly these kind of sounds are made by resampling and resampling and resampling... as shon in this BM2 tutorial. https://intua.net/forums/index.php?p=/discussion/4775/tutorial-neurofunk-bass-single-cycle

I’m really enjoying Stagelight but there’s no mistaking the quality of the sound engine in NS2 . (I predicict SL 5 will have a new sound engine which I think it’s due for). . It (NS2) really is on another level, IMO. I don’t even think GB or Cubasis sound as present . Korg Gadget, maybe close . Beathawk is up there too, but the only apps that I hear competing sound wise would be Moog 15 and the great sounding but limited feature set of Reason Compact . It kinda reminds me of Bitwig, Audio-wise.
In terms of sound quality , with that video alone, NS2 has set a new standard iOS and in that department it sounds as good as any desktop program I’ve heard to date . Instabuy..

  • So this is from Matt on the forum back in Sept of 2017 when he first showed NS2 to the forum...

It's really been a case of taking the massive user wishlist from NS1 and combining it with my own massive wishlist. It hasn't been possible to do everything - sometimes due to user interface constraints (simply too complex/specialised), sometimes due to time constraints.

Where time constraints have been the issue, I've tried to prioritize the stuff which requires deep integration since that would be the most difficult to 'retrofit' in a later update - this became a problem in NS1 which is why I decided (after 3-4 years) to halt updates on it and start from scratch again.

So I'm hoping that although NS2 may not have everything I'd want it to have at V1.0, it will be good platform to build upon over the next few years.

So he built NS2 as an expandable framework so that, even though he couldn't get to specific functionality that he wanted to in time for release, he tried to leave as much space for those features in the framework instead of painting himself into a corner. And doing that alone takes time. Its like future proofing an API you are writing, not knowing what you might want it to do, but knowing you need to have some coding standards, libraries, etc that allow you to expand.

You always write better software when you File > New and create the next version. And Matt's had 6 years to learn from 4 years of dealing with his version 1. Would you agree @StevePAL ?

Ok, looks Seve made step out of shadows, i think now it's no more reason to stay low-profile, it's time admit that there is "secret society" hiding in the shadows for a centuries. We were silently watching you, mue - he - he - he (evil laugh deep like Obsidian bass)

First version of that part of video soundtrack with that mentioned neuro bass was made year go just from Obsidian instances (for everything including drums because back then there was not drum sampler finished, current demo version uses few samples for drums, but they were all synthetised in Obsidian and then just sampled and layered in Slate)

If i good remember there was aroud 16 instances of Obsidian an HELL A LOT of FXs on inserts - and load on iPhone 6 was still arround 40%. That's about efficiency. Simply incredible.

Definitely that bass is not resampled , it's pure synth engine. Althought i did my best with that bass, i'm pretty sure it can be done even better by some better soundesigner than myself :-)

Here few more candies for neuro/reesee freaks, all those are Obsidian factory patches:

Will NS2 have midi assignable transport control? For example mapping record, play, stop etc to a midi controller?

Not yet. ATM you can map MIDI CC to macros for every instrument + mixer volume / pan + all automatable insert FX parameters .. (in short term, everything what you can automate, you can controll with midi CC)
There is learn function or you can assign CC manually .. you can save assignment maps and recall them and you can save "default" assignment map which will be used for new added track to project. This default settings is unique for each midi device.

You are welcome, man! They are AMAZING! How many presets will be shipped with the initial purchase?
I wonder how these can be achieved. Maybe I wil bug you some day for some advice, oh no....

Will there be demo projects to re-engineer and discover how this are done?

Anyways, thanks for stepping out of the realm of NS2 and reveal your alter ego

Interesting from my standpoint ... when I bought NS1 (not too long ago actually) I said to myself, "this is what I have been looking for on ios!!!" and it was mostly because of the workflow. The included synths were icing on a delicious cake for me. Then I got so excited for NS2 for the same reason - WORKFLOW. Then yesterday, the newest synth from Sugar Bytes was released. I got excited for a moment and then the demo of NS2 was released and I thought ... "what do I need another synth for, there is this Obsidian thing about to fall in my lap!!!".

And then I'll be able to drop in one of my already wonderful au synths into this NS2 thing too? Holy crap. This is the game changer for me. And that is not hype (though i am hyped). This is simply what I've been waiting for.
