Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

  • I would be interested to hear about the drum capabilities of the Volca Sample vs Beat if anyone has them.

  • I have a sample. You can create an almost any type of drum sound from a sample in addition to just playing various drum samples. It’s pretty limitless although fairly low resolution.

    Got them all but mix.
Beats with the roll automation record per part is hard to beat.
Keys and bass are awesome too.
And kick has some nice features also.
I am all for the analog ones.

  • I own the beats. I enjoy it a lot, but the snare leaves a lot to be desired imo.

  • Thanks all

Beats is probably what I will grab if any ornsample

  • I only have the Volca Bass, but if I was to get more Volca's I'd go for the Volca FM, Volca Sample and the Volca Mix so I could easily charge all from one device. Volca Sample has the nice option to send swing in the sync signal for more groovy feeling sequences.

For now I'm happy with the Volca Bass. It's quite nice 'sampler fodder' :)

  • I've had Beats, Bass and Sample. All were really good fun especially linked up. Was running Bass through distortion and delay pedals and it sounded amazing! Regretted selling Bass and Sample not so much Beats. Saying that though - they were all unbelievable at that price.

Side note - had Sample with me one day at work. Hooked it up through the radio and it sounded MEGA. Best fun I've had at work!

  • Anybody know How do you sync volca with a circuit ?

The Volca Beat is awesome if it is modded. There’s a simple mod to the kick which gives it more tuning range and it has some serious thump. If you don’t do the snare mod (which is difficult) the snare (to me) just sounds wrong. Ugly digital distortion.

  • I find the sample the most useful of the bunch. It sounds fantastic too.

  • I have, sample, bass, keys and mix, plus a Kaoss pad mini 2s for FX. I had the beats - hated the snare so had to go. Miss the kick on the beats tho. Sample Is probably my fave, but keys is a very close second.

  • How different from KORG Gadget sounds are they? I know part of the point is hardware, but just wondering on the sound character and quality vs iOS. I have a good monophonic hardware synth (SE-02) so am just poking around to see if I really "need" anything else.

They sound better to my ears. The sample is just in a league of it's own when giving your own samples that lowfi crunch that made old house music so great.

  • I’ve got Bass, Keys, Beats and Kick. They are all fun, but man, the Kick is a blast.

Snare mod proper info. It will require some tooling like magnifier glass and thin iron solder but with some patience (and previous practice) is doable.

Also midi mod is a great and simple one being the placement and the spare part used the most difficult to nail...

Mine done back in the day.

Dedicated outputs also interesting but bit more step up for the mess it requires...

But IMHO volca sampler is way better choice. Idk how mod friendly is but midi out should be straight forward like the others probably...

  • sample is the most powerful volca. kick is my favorite.

Midi out from circuit to one of the Volcas and from that volca, sync leads to the other volcas.
Remember to set the midi’d Volca to a channel other than 1,2 or 10 if you don’t want to sequence from the Circuit.

well the sample plays back digital samples and the beats is an analog drum machine. it sounds like no other drum machine and thats a good thing

  • I have Sample, Bass, Keys and FM.
They’re all great in their own way.
The sample is crazy for getting interesting stuff going with the motion record.
Bass just has a lovely tone that needs very little, if no e.q in the mix.
Keys is quite versatile and sounds great through external fx.
FM is very capable, but a pain to program from the front panel. You can also chain sequences on the FM.

I did the snare mod (barely!) and I truly think that’s how it’s supposed to sound. There was also a jumper across a couple of legs of one of the kick pots I did that gave it a wider frequency range. I don’t think any of the others are really worth the hassle. I found it really difficult soldering on that component side!

  • Sample is indeed the best for most people. FM is pretty fun but if you like analog synths:

Volca and Bass are incredible if you can solder a wire. Heaps of pads on the boards for taking direct output from individual VCO, VCO MIX, VCF, VCA

The sound quality drastically improves on the Keys by using direct VCA out.

The keys is my favourite because of the mods you can do to it.

    Yep. buy it

    then I break it

Sounds like a plan of my life

  • Does anyone do mods (professionally) to the Volcas? Gotta be someone. I'd break it for sure.

Ask and ye shall receive, if you employ a simple google search ... I might need to do this.

I have both: think of the Sample as a box of unlimited potential: want to use it as a mini 808? Load 808 samples .. suddenly feel like sequencing a kalimba? (and so on and so on) all with Motion Control for Lots of parameters.

The Beats on the other hand is almost opposite scope-wise: if you love the Nature of those particular preset sounds - and I personally do - there's a lot to be said for its ready-to-go simplicity and familiarity.

I say go Sample if you want an audio Pandoras Box (including drum machine and way beyond) or Beats if you're seeking a reliable yet limited-palette drumbox.

  • I currently own Beats, Kick and Sample, and have sold the FM and Keys. I love the Beats, and the Kick is fun in a “poor man’s DFAM” sort of way.

The snare mod is well worth it if you don’t have it.

  • Just saw this in another thread here. Reminded me that I still want one ...
