Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

Elastic Drums - just got it and love it like crazy

I managed to keep myself entertained with 2 patterns for 3 hours the other night playing with Elastic... There is so much live awesome here!!

Curious if people have tips, tricks, kits, etc they would like to share with this newb... Once I make a few I really like I’ll post as well.

  • Lol. Awesome first post. I love that your excitement motivated you to post about it. :)

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride. B)

Yeah, been scouring many an app trying to find a nice live drum synth, gr16 looks cool but wanted something less groove box feeling... BM3 is what I have used most so far, and its awesome but not what I would choose for live techno jamming until I spend a lot of time on kits.. Didnt really like DM2, I love Patterning for more experimental rhythms but Elastic was just right for the goldilocks techno gratification!

Newb question... Can you only link 1 controller in ED or am i missing something? Seems like it was an option in earlier rev based on manual, but might be mistaken...

And using different midi channels for things? Seems like omni or single chan is all u get.

While we are at it, what’s up with Axon 2? I haven’t gotten it to make anything useable, and the presets don’t give me much hope... Anyone get anything they really like out of it? I want to love it. I suppose it could be a really complicated hi-hat substitute...

  • AB admin, feel free to merge this w the latest EDrums thread if u want, realizing that would prob have been a better move, lol. I’ll come at you like a spider monkey haha!

  • But to pine on a bit more about how rad EDS is... (hate to call it ED) just a stroll through the presets (many of which made by great producers) you hear the range of possibilities is staggering. Would love to see AU and individual outs on this bad boy, or just scale it up to host status and it’s on like a hippy on a futon. Imagine Maxima or Turnado or (insert fave plug) or sidechain on individual tracks... (although it seems to side chain comp a bit in the audio engine somewhere...?? At least overdriving channels seems to pump a bit...). This is a seriously fun piece of azpp.

  • ED is what got me on Viagra. Wait? What thread is this? Am I wearing pants?

Seriously though, ED got me through my initial obsession with owning an Elektron Digitakt (the other ED) and for that I owe the developer a lot.

  • One of my all time favorite apps and I've been back into it just in the last few days. I used to do full tracks on it - kind of an industrial dub techno sound. Jumped into it on my iPhone the other day to make some drum samples for another app, and ended up starting a full song that is way better than what I was working on originally. I wish there were more than 6 instruments, but if you're clever you can make do. I've gone so far as rendering a pattern to wav and importing it as a sample when I want to bring in more elements.

I have found that sometimes limiting the instruments to 6 can actually make me more creative and focused--and the arrangements/mixes feel more dynamic and focused because, well, "less is more".

  • I already have Ruismaker fm. Is this much different?

Yes. It's completely different. It's a drum synthesizer that is most closely related to the Elektron Digitakt. It's parameter locking is remarkable. It's a total wonder for mangling samples. Its song mode is superintuitive. Excellent and easily automatable effects. Leagues beyond anything on iOS (although I haven't delved that far into GR-16; maybe that comes close)?
My problem: It has a really particular sound. It's hard for me to make anything that doesn't sound like it came from Elastic Drums.

Also, I'm one track into the new Mouse on Mars record, and it's phenomenal. So I'm all pumped up for these guys!

  • Sweet thanks

I agree with this, but I also think the same is true for the Ruismakers and Axon 2. Really, if you're willing to take the time, ED is better about it than those other two: One thing I like doing is just using all six tracks to create a crazily multi-layered sound, like a snare. Importing samples from another kit, or even mixing it down to a sample, re-importing, and repeating, gives you infinite possibilities. But, by far my favorite thing to do with ED is just create these cacophonous jam sessions that somehow, for me at least, manage to be pretty fun to go back and listen to.

What exactly is parameter locking and why does everyone love it? Regarding that particular sound, I actually made a pattern in GR16 that I felt compelled to title Elastic Drums. Metallic/industrial is the term I would use. Does it well too, but if that’s not your preferred sound, you may not dig ED

I don't know ED, but generally that term refers to the ability to program parameter changes into a sequencer, so you don't have to wiggle a knob. It's another way of saying automation.

With elastic drums, it is very much automated knob twiddling. But every single parameter — pitch, decay, release, filter, etc. – can be automated per step. It’s pretty amazing. On an iPad there’s a screen that lets you finely adjust the values; it’s a little more seat-of-the-pants on an iPhone, as there’s no room for that screen.

  • OK, this thread made me dive back into Elastic Drums. A valuable exercise is to play some of the many presets. Most them I find really difficult listening: super-skitterish and not especially musical. But it really shows off how the mangling can work. What I'd really like to see is a tutorial that gets into the automation. You can really play with the sample length and its envelope. And you can adjust pitch, but it seems to be related to a decimal scale rather than a musical one. I'm never sure if I'm 2.43 percent or 2.43 semitones. (Whatever it is, it's usually dissonant.)

Anyway, I feel like I'm just scratching the surface. Especially after listening to the rest of the new Modest Mouse record, "Dimensional People." The album is pretty remarkable; it's like a cross between Can, Faust, Fela, Kendrick Lamar's jazzier excursions. At least a couple of the tracks on the album have ED as their base, so the app is capable of putting out airy, jazzy sounds.

    Well said.

It’s an exciting automation playground for sure. I find the knobs a little hard to wiggle myself, so it usually takes a few goes clearing and redoing but it really is rather special. Also, the sampler’s great! It wasn’t obvious to me at first that you can load in big long loops. It’s kind of a hexatrack, almost.

Every time I spend more than ten minutes with Elastic Drums, I end up wanting a knobby controller with a knob for each thing.

That's an interesting idea. I wonder if there's an ideal controller; it's got good midi learn, doesn't it? What do you use, @elasticdrums?

  • So I found this right away:

GAH!!! Yeah, I don't really think I have a limit to the amount of knobs and sliders I want surrounding me...

Recently picked up a launchCTLxl, getting a Keylab 49 of Craigslist tomorrow... That faderfox is legit too!

  • this app deserves the praise it gets

  • Do the tip popups on ED ever go away? I've had it for three days and every time I open it and try to use the automate and velocity buttons I still get a pop up telling me what the buttons do that I have to dismiss before being able to do anything. Really annoying and I don't see a setting anywhere.

  • Ive had ED for months and just recently started really digging on it. The effect automation and step automation can build such gnarly psychedelic hi hat patterns.

I would have a really hard time choosing between ED and Patterning 2 for intricate idm and glitch hop. Glad ive got both

  • love to drop whole loops in the sample slots, and hit randomize button (on the sampler itself) to mangle loops all day long, of course the standard randomizers are great for putting more mangle into your mangle on top of that as well.

    Bruh.

  • then I like to take those loops and toss them into Patterning as an 8trk loop player and use Patternings time shifting, probability, and p.lockish goodies on said loops to induce a sample coma that I seldom want to return from, reversing the chain Is just as good.

  • Is my latest Elastic Drums recording...
