Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

The new PPG looks seriously HOT! Check these three preview videos

I'm assuming it will get Audiobus support from the off too.

Wolfgang Palm is the 'crazy professor' type I wish had been teaching me science during my school years. Such a massive hero of mine.

  • Over at synthtopia was this:

Hi Guys The new WaveMapper app does include audiobus support. We also want to underline that development for WaveGenerator is still ongoing with more to come, so rest assured new features and fixes will continue to come for that baby. Thanks for your interest in Wolfgang’s lastest synth.

So it looks like you assumed correctly!

  • @uglykidmoe

Great to see that WaveGenerator will continue to benefit from Wolfgangs love too. :)

Whenever I encounter DJ's or producers who profess that IOS devices are mere musical toy's I point them in the direction of both WaveGenerator & Animoog - that soon shuts them up!

  • Introductory discount?

  • @jonmoore

Same. I also use the Korg apps to show off iOS prowess (sans ikaossilator... because it is a musical toy), and the lemur app which is usually what makes my DJ friends go.. "oh, oh nice... Can I see that? Will it work with Serato?"

    That's when they're hooked.

  • @mgmg4871 no chance, he's made that clear in the past. 1 price, forever

  • @Ian

Huh, didn't know he said that. I sometimes get frustrated to learn that apps I purchased go on sale a day or two later...ergh. But I don't let it make me spiteful, just a little frustrated.

But I respect the position of "no discounts". They've proven their prowess with WaveGen. They show you enough of the app in the demo's to display it's possibilities and sound quality. Let people buy it for the app, not for the price.

  • It's a simple rule of economics. Specialist apps sell far less therefore the asking price needs to be that much more if the developer is to stand any chance of recouping on things like their R&D investment, ongoing support, marketing & PR costs and the myriad of other hidden expenses involved in running a business.

Looking in this weeks top paid apps (iPad) on itunes, there's not a single Audiobus compatible app in the top 300 sellers (and this is just the natural order of things and shouldn't come as a shock). Music creation apps are are fringe activity to the general IOS universe and pro music creation apps a fringe activity within the music segment.

I really think we should give our poor developers a break and be happy to pay a reasonable amount for pro products. The app store is littered with apps that were great ideas but never made enough money to warrant ongoing support/updates. I'd far rather pay $20 for something knowing there's a chance that it will be supported into the future because the developer has been able to make a living from their creative venture.

I have a feeling that the discount culture that seems to be integral to many developers IOS marketing activity (especially for music apps) will wane much as it has done in the desktop DAW/plugin market. We've all been suckered into 'no-brainer' deals only to find that the software doesn't suit our needs - dare I say it, I picked up a number of apps strictly because they were Audiobus compatible just before Xmas and I've since only opened them once or twice!

I'm fully supportive of developers that set a fair price for their products and stick to it without any discounting as this seems the most honourable way of doing business in my eyes. Nobody is left feeling they've been treated unfairly because the app they just purchased for $20 is suddenly available for half the price. And as was mentioned by @uglykidmoe, with IOS apps, developers if they so choose, can make available a plethora of video demos so you are in no doubt as to the wiseness of your investment. It just pains me that Apple don't allow true demo's to be released through the app store (crippled 'free' apps with IAP upgrades don't count).

  • From another perspective, no video demo can take the place of experienced musician/consumers. Most apps are judged by their ratings that come from the initial buyers. So in essence not only are initial buyers supporting devs with their purchase, but are also advertising for them. So, I see a mutual benefit of discounting the initial release of a app for a limited time or number. I think it balances out in the end. Higher ratings bring higher number of consumers.

  • @mgmg4871,

I do get your perspective but I did notice you were happy to purchase Cubasis at the full price when it was released before Xmas (and if you are a full Cubase user you're fully aware of the cost of ownership for the desktop product). So much is to do with perceived value and the existing relationship we individually have with particular vendors/brands. Admittedly I owned an original PPG synth back in the eighties and have owned a couple of Waldorf machines since (very much the progeny of the original PPG). These machine cost me many thousands of pounds so $20 seems a pitance.

I find it frustrating that people constantly gripe about the cost of the serious music production tools that are available on IOS when their desktop equivalent cost at least ten times more (and those desktop plugins are yet again a tenth of the cost of their hardware equivalent). Apps like Animoog & the PPG synths are professional music production tools in much the same manner that Lemur is a professional control interface and Auria is a professional DAW. There may be a multitude of apps that profess to do the same thing for $2.99 but the reality is very different.

Producing and supporting apps of this quality takes constant investment in time and money. I realise my view on this is probably a minority one but I've yet to meet an IOS developer who's got filthy rich from building music apps. Usually these guys are driven by a passion to create innovative music creation tools because they're musicians themselves and all to often their creations are more labour of love than serious business venture.

Labour of love. Maybe you're right. Yes, I did purchase Cubasis at full price and will probably pay full price for the new PPG synth if there's no discount, but everyone is not able to do that. I had no gripe with anyone about the price. I just made a realistic statement about who benefits from discounted prices. There are a lot of struggling musicians that $5 or $10 bucks difference, determines if they have access to the tools needed to compete. A lot of the work I do is a labour of love, so I go in knowing this, and not expecting to benefit financially. The reward is seeing others, especially less fortunate benefit. I do respect your opinion though.

  • thoughtful and courteous disagreement? ON THE INTERNET? wtfigoh?

  • Seriously guys, what's wrong with you? At this point someone should have already called someone else poopy-face or something. I am disappoint, son!

  • Audiobus responsible for shock outbreak of good manners on the Internet!
