Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

My drambo presets M1sha and 4tRhythm

edited July 2022 in Creations

All instruments are driven by a M1sha. Just use the sliders to control the MIDI chance module.

M1sha is a Drambo preset inspired by Eventide Misha

Nice to hear you play M1sha.

    Good stuff.

Thank you for listening and for your kind words

After I built it I was always playing with it. It gives me a lot of fun.

Yeah, I know the feeling. :)

  • That has to be my favorite Drambo patch… so perfectly modeled on the Eventide hardware. I like the instrument choices you made to create this floating musical world. You are a true master of the iPad.

@ZhouJing - your Drambo patches are on another level in terms of their complexity and musicality - I would love to learn a bit more how you go about making them - what is the theory behind the super fast sequencing method in 4tRhythm?

That's a huge compliment, thank you. I have learned everything in this forum and I have learned a lot from you. My English is not good, so for a long time I just watched in silence.

4tRhythm is inspired by a drummer's rhythm exercise that requires the drummer to play all 16 rhythm patterns in 4 steps per beat. Putting the 16 rhythm patterns in order reveals that they are basically linear variations. So the rhythm patterns can be modulated using S&H or sliders. When the modulation is small, the notes are just shifted between steps. When the modulation is large, the notes will vary in density.
Sequencing drums in this way is somewhere between the step sequencer and the Euclidean sequencer. Compared to the step sequencer, it can produce dynamic rhythms and is very fast to sequence. Compared to the Euclidean sequencer, it is closer to real playing.

I think we still underestimate Drambo, which can be a codeless development platform that can solve most music production needs. Its modules are very efficient, so it is possible to build very complex patches like M1sha.

Your english is coming though in very well crafted sentences. I do not have this skill in
    any language other than english.

4tRhythm is inspired by a drummer's rhythm exercise that requires the drummer to play all 16 rhythm patterns in 4 steps per beat.

I need to check that out. As a life long drummer, I know Euclidean concepts never entered into my thinking except for the Latin Clave which is a textbook example of a Euclidean Rhythm. Rock and Jazz are less strict in spreading notes out evenly in a sequence.

But working through all possible combinations is the ultimate skillset of the drum master...
along with independence of the limbs and linear sequence where you try to avoid 2 or more
strikes at any given instance so the music has the right sound at the right movement and a kind of percussive melodic quality.

I would love to see what you might come up with for a linear drummer app/preset. It is OK take one hand like the cymbal or hi-hat and let it play a simple pattern while snare/bass/toms do a strictly linear pattern. "The Funky Drummer" pattern was one of the first popular rhythms to demonstrate this approach. It has been taken to levels of complexity by modern drummers like Nate Smith and Louis Cole.

I didn't think that far ahead. That way there are 256 rhythmic patterns even if you limit it to 4 steps per beat, which would be something completely different. but it's interesting, I'll think about it.

It gets even more complex when you realize most drummers play a lot of "rests". It's a bit like presets on complicated synths... 90% of them don't sound very good. I keep hitting the Dice (for random settings) on most synths that have that feature and I rarely get a Jackpot.

I'd recommend that you only fill about 8-10 notes max of a 16 note sequence on average to get the most useable results.

I found that with very few modifications to 4tRhythm I could get a linear mode. In this mode notes are triggered in priority from track 1 to 4. No multiple notes will be triggered at the same time. Because of the track priority, it also stabilizes the rhythm while having some random notes.

Please try it out. Your suggestions always make perfect sense.

4tRythm is great. You are really good at making accessible UI for complex patches in Drambo!

I didn't notice any immediate effect from trying the linear mode, but it was just a quick play. Any suggested settings for testing the different modes?

Perhaps the xy pad could be extracted out of the layers and repeated 4x times next to each other for more easy jamming? I might try that. Edit: or maybe best to keep it simple.

@ZhouJing, I just noticed this python library for Arvo Part-like compositions. If you get inspired to apply your Drambo skills in this direction ...

Thanks, I think UI is no less important than functionality. In Drambo, although UI design capabilities are very limited, at least these modules can be organized efficiently.

I downloaded the previously uploaded version and tried it. It works. You can try to reduce the track speed to 1/2 or 1/4. it will be easier to see the difference.

I'm still thinking about the performance part. I would like all the controls to be displayed at the same time, but screen space is very limited. I even thought about using a single XYpad to control all tracks, but that would be confusing.

I'm not very familiar with Arvo Pärt, but I find it hard to imitate a composer with just one preset. Even if I simplified his technique into ARP, I wouldn't feel I could do anything better than StepPolyArp.

  • Sounds nice and makes me want to try that drambo patch.

  • @McD - Seeing your name pop up both in the Drambo and Mozaic sections of patchstorage.com makes me wonder if BramBos and Giku could collaborate to introduce a self contained ’Mozaic’ module for Drambo..

By following Apple's standards for AUv3 they have already collaborated. You can run Mozaic instances inside Drambo to generate or process MIDI. I haven't tried it yet being stuck (happily) in AUM.

  • @McD - good point - it hadn't occured to me that they could work together - just having a look at it now - looks like a very powerful combination - modulating midi CC's into Mozaic which is also acting as midi filter - happy days

  • Quite mellow, and very melodic.
    I am enjoying this recording.
    Love the violin.
    Well done.

Thanks guys, I’m glad there is still interest in this track.

Yes, the translation is very accurate, you are very kind.

  • An important upgrade to 4tRhythm, it now adds ARP mode, a very interesting way to generate ARP, but it can do much more than just ARP. Input automatically generated chord progressions and it can produce constantly changing rhythms and very nice melodies.
