Not a favorite aria in here, but do you hear a lot of countertenors?

  • Che gelida manina from La Bohéme. Beautiful. I love this simple version. Just the piano and Pavarotti’s voice:

The Flower Duet widely used in tv ads

I could boot British Airways for ruining this tune :)

Mrs Monzo walked up the aisle to that one (not the BA version). Proper posh we are like.

  • I was at the opera yesterday to see Alcina from Haendel.

One song that I think might be appropriate for the current situation “Verdi Prati”

My all time favorite is Maria Callas singing „Ebben? ne andrò lontana“ from La Wally. I heard it first time in the French movie „Diva“ in the 80s and it still gives me goosebumps.

The most unearthly moment in Opera: Maria Callas insane high E flat at the end of Aida, 1951 in Mexico City. Hear how the audience goes crazy.

My best live experience of an Opera was Aida at the Arena di Verona, Italy. A roman Amphitheater without any electrical amplification - it was magic.

  • Can you believe that baroque music can be that beautiful

    Alcina from Haendel

  • Here is another one…maybe one of the most beautiful ever…

    et s'affaiblit: il est trop grand, rien ne l'emplit;
et trop fragile, tout le brise! Tout le brise!

    Go! Let my tears flow
    they do good, my dear!
The tears that we do not cry
    in our soul all fall,
    and with their patient drops
Pound the sad and weary heart!
Its resistance finally exhausts itself; the heart digs itself...
    and weakens: it is too big, nothing fills it;
and too fragile, everything breaks it! Everything breaks it!

  • Stick with this one if you haven’t seen it before 😊

  • @GeoTony Thanks for bringing back some memories, I remember that the first time round.

My favourite version of Largo al factotum from the Barber of Seville is:

I liked it so much I looked the singer up and sent his official email address a fan letter telling him the joy it had brought to my kids!

  • Casta Diva from Norma. Probably the best role of la Callas

R.I.P. Dr. Evadne Hinge and Dame Hilda Bracket. (George Logan and Patrick Fyffe.)

  • I was lucky enough to see a performance of the 1976 revival of Threepenny Opera at the Public Theatre in NYC.

Raul Julia as Macheath was dazzling.

For the violin's lovers (not really an aria but still part of an opera)

  • The scenic expression can really bring aria to another level. Love the work with the puppet in this one

  • I don’t like opera. But…

    Damn.

  • Hands down:

This is a perfect example of what opera is all about… and this performance will never be topped…
