Song Of The Month Club - January 2022

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material

And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine

My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler. I had some help from @JanKun who provided the beautiful arpeggio guitars in the instrumental sections and also the keys in the break after the first chorus.

This piece is mostly guitar-based, apart from a dash of SampleTron and Quanta in the intro.

    There is a cold
    And empty place
An endless span of silent space

    And I see
    I can’t win
Against all that is and all that’s been

    We’re sparks
    In the night
    A flickering of light
    We’re running for cover
    We’re holding each other
So wake me and shake me and tell me you'll take me

    You can’t avoid
    The hand of fate
It will snuff out all you create

    And you’re caught
    On a pin
This is not a fight that you can win

    We’re sparks
    In the night
    A flickering of light
    We’re running for cover
    We’re holding each other
So wake me and shake me and tell me you'll take me

  • This is an older improvised piece from the late 1990s. I was using Yamaha EX5, Korg Triton Pro, Yamaha FS1R, and Kawai K5000S synthesizers. And they were connected to a Lexicon PCM 80 for the reverb effect.

This one is titled Clear Skies.

  • Happy New Year everyone.. This track is one I have done with Kimicoh from an EP that's being release on the 14th of Jan.. Its already out on promo... Enjoy..

Hello! Im new in this section of the forum. I have been making music (in my spare time) on my iPad and laptop in the sofa in front of the TV for 2 years now. I have never released anything and no-one have yet heard what Ive been doing. So I was in a flow in December and decided to finish the three songs I made and publish them, mostly to have a goal to release the music, because I make a lot of songs in a year and never finnish them, I know very few wants to listen to it, but its fun to release it anyway. They have not appeared on soundcloud yet.

Well the song I choose for this month is a track called A. Track number one on the "EP".

Comments for your great tracks above,
richardyot: good songwriting, your vocals feels genuine and very indie pop? matches the feeling of the track perfect, I think its to short and the "end solo" is a little bit boring maybe (but thats just me, I have listened to much prog rock with lengthy tracks with hysterical solos :).

DavidEnglish: I have listened very little to ambient kind of music, nice piano. Very retro feel to it.

janpieter: great piece, like it a lot, lots of different things going on, like the flow that starts 1:14

studs1966: very retro disco feeling, great work, maybe a little lengthy with the same stuff going on.

Thanks for the listen and the feedback :) It is indeed intended to be indie, or shoegaze maybe.

Nice and varied track, the piano parts are sparse and angular which gives them some great character. The bass, when it comes in, is really tasty, and the arrangement is quite interesting, drifting from one section to another with some nice changes.

It reminds me a little of Kruder and Dorfmeister, which is a good thing - it has the same very laid-back vibe, coupled with a good groove and lots of interesting sounds and textures.

It's nice to hear some hardware synths for a change :)

I also like the fact that the piece is almost classical sounding in terms of vibe, nothing EDM-ish about this at all. There's quite a variety of sounds, I especially like the almost bagpipe-like patch that comes in at around 3 minutes in. Overall it's a nice laid-back and calming piece of music.

  • Two things grab me straight away: the funky and catchy riff, and the choppy rhythm part.

This is especially well constructed in terms of the arrangement IMO, with the parts weaving together very nicely, and a great flow to the track, with new elements being introduced all along to keep it fresh. The sounds are especially well-chosen, and overall it's really funky, fun, and interesting.

This is really classic-sounding disco/house. The vocals are good, and the strings really give it a nice lift.

Thank you for your feedback! my tracks often becomes varied, I dont follow any rules when it comes to song structure, I just let it flow in whatever direction :), can be a bit messy sometimes

  • @DavidEnglish I really like this Piano Composition…But if I have to criticize which is maybe not on a skill level or in the sense You r a kind of a master in such thinks I would suggest to do something on the overall tuning. I’m not really experienced with real life pianos but the similar approach or initialization I can find in the Chilli in D Moll Album, which is more attractive for listening due to in my opinion this difference. When it’s based on the choice of the chords, I would like to get feedback cause in this case I’m like I said not an expert

@studs1966 I like greezy cheese

So…this is my installation this month…I think it’s the First time I was able to realize the Idea of abstract ambient music like the term is associated in my mind. Sadly it was a live recording where maybe half of the performance is gone to the unlimited wides of the Holy Beat Hi Nu Man 🙊

@DavidEnglish and thx for the comment last month…
    @ janpieter thx too

  • Happy New Year to you too! I think you didn't miss a single month in 2021? May you be as consistent in 2022!

This track is as sunny as the title suggests :) Bouncy and happy feeling, I can imagine it as part of the soundtrack in a quirky animated movie. The brass is especially fun, and the percussive arp propels the track along with a bounce in its step.

  • I've enjoyed listening through all your tracks. I don't use the forums that much and haven't really been aware of the music that people have posted here.

@richardyot - really enjoyed your song, good lyrics and interesting music
@DavidEnglish - I'm a sucker for anything with a piano as that's my first instrument. Nice bit of ambient there
@studs1966 - enjoyed the 1970s vibe. If anything the track felt a bit long and perhaps could have benefited from having a bit of difference between verse/chorus etc. But all the elements were there!
@Overdosed_Ape - interesting track. It's not a style of music I'm in to so it's hard to comment on specifics.
@martinsa82 - interesting textures and use of the instruments.
    @Kitusai - a fun and bright track!

I was quite busy with creating music last year although that seems to have shuddered to a complete halt. Hopefully I'll get something new together before long.

So here's one of mine from last year. Up until this point I'd never tried using samples, but WebSDR opened up a whole bucket load of ideas, especially when paired with auGenX. Mostly software synths on iPadOS although my hardware Model D was used for the sequenced lines. I created videos for all the tracks on the album using Lumafusion.

  • Lots of interesting classic synth sounds and textures in this, and I like the really sudden jumps in the arrangement from one section to the other, it makes it feel like a collage of musical parts.

The spoken word sample is good fun, and give the track a light-hearted vibe. My absolute favourite part is the brassy melody that comes in towards the end, it's quite beautiful.

Oh, and the video is mesmerising :)

  • I really like this track. Hypnotising, fresh and dry, jazzy, fragile and intense.
Do you have reference music correlating with this track? I like to listen more this kind of music.

  • @richardyot If the Gods give me life in 2022 and the muses are not too shy, I will be as diligent as in 2021 :-)

@Identor Thank you very much! I will quote you on my website!
There are quite a few songs in this vein in my albums.
I've been listening to a lot of music for a long time in very, very different styles. I'm thinking about this piece perhaps the beautiful album of Linda Fredriksson 'Juniper' and Erik Truffaz 'Lune rouge'. At the moment I'm also listening a lot to the last works of Jon Hassle (who unfortunately just died) available on Bandcamp and Bill Frisell. But so many others too! Thanks again for your feedback!

Listened to some of your tracks on your albums. all of them are very enjoyable. Many different instruments and listen experiences. I call your music travel music, while staring out the window of the train, where the landscpe changes from time to time.

I like your track alot and the retrofeeling of it, it was a fun listen for sure

  • well this music is maybe more on the ”art” side for me (and its a compliment), im not used to this kind of music maybe but im impressed with your composition and the feeling of your track

  • @richardyot The melody is absolutely superb! You start off the year with a hit that is very much in keeping with the richardyot style at its best. Special mention to the final solo all in restraint.

@DavidEnglish Keith Jarrett leaves this body! Very beautiful sounds for a beginning of year soaring, peaceful, flying over snowy landscapes.

@studs1966 Facet balls and dance floors, the end of year celebrations continue in 2022! It reminds me a bit of Earth, Wind & Fire. Move your butt!

@martinsa82 Very beautiful sonorities for this relaxed piece with multiple changes of atmospheres. The slightly reverberated percussion repeats are surprising and revive the interest. A catchy universe, I liked a lot and the visual on Bandcamp is successful especially as it corresponds very well to the music I think. The sound of double bass among others is magnificent.

@Overdosed_Ape Really loud and radical! My vu-meters almost exploded!

@swfarrington The video is great and forms a very successful whole with the music. Sounds impeccable and I really like the vocal breaks even if I don't understand what is being said. The whole makes me a rather allegorical impression, a rather 'Vangelis' atmosphere. Very successful.

Well, the year is off to a great start, folks! Quality, variety and surprises are on the agenda!

Let's see what else 2022 has in store.

  • Here is my try at something different for me. I’m from a thrash metal background but have been recently turned on to jazz. Like Al di meloa, joe pass. Return to forever. I feel like a whole new world and way to play guitar have been shown to me. Those jazz guys are amazing musicians. But anyway this was made with cubasis, my les Paul, and swam double bass app. And also jazz drummer for drums.

Oh yeah I got a Fultone mdv3 univibe for Christmas 😀, it also makes an appearance near the end of the track.

I really like the riff that bookends the start and finish of the track, it's funky and very catchy. The arrangement is very varied as well, with 3 main "movements", and the middle section really changes the pace before the finale which takes everything up a notch or two with the Wah solo and the Univibe outro.

Very nice playing throughout, with technically excellent performances.

I'm not sure if the second track is intended to be there - it's so different from the first that I'm assuming it's just a separate track.
