Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Our wait on a few iOS reviews first see if brings anything new to the game my drum machine locker pretty well stocked.

Before this there's was only DPP(drumperfectpro) that held a real high sound quality on iOS. This is nothing like what you have before (imo).

Octacron worked with it right out of the box (no map change).

This is the actual christmas folks ....🎅🏽

Edit: replacing the drums for the session drummer in Logic worked fine as well ... mmmm

Nice. Does it sound better than Logic's session drummer kits? Those are mainly what I use when I'm just jamming, so I'd be curious if this would be a nice upgrade in Logic?

Logic Drummers on iPad don't have round-robin samples yet, so in theory this could be an upgrade.

How many actual useable kits are there in the factory presets. I mean 33 samples of a bell (at different velocities for Round Robins/Humanization) quickly starts to eat into the 8000 or so samples this has but, how many usable kits like the TAMA kit are there?

You better ask Klevgränd Studios on that!

Isn't 'usable' a very subjective term?
What's usable for one person can be total garbage to another?!

I started auditioning kits last night from this

Quick count thru all 9 packs included:

196 full kits(!) ready to roll

From the first two packs (acoustic and pop/rock) that I went thru last night

41 total kits... Only 11 of those didn't immediately strike inspiration... The other 30 I had to stop messing with to go to audition the next sound

    I'm VERY pleased with this

For finger drummers, this app is a fking dream!! (I was looking for exactly this when I started finger drumming last year)

It's the only thing I've found that comes close to AudioLayer and Drumdrops for mobile drum emulation

And I cannot WAIT to audition the other kits... LOADS of sounds I'd never find or purposefully search for, and it's gonna be expanding my beats exponentially (just from small testing)

[Edit @jwmmakerofmusic: funnily enough, when I asked that slightly confusing Lofi question about 'any recommended plugins with kits?' -- This is the EXACT kind of app I was looking for!! Just funny how I asked about it a week or two ago.... And now one released. Ahhh the relevance!!]

  • So how do you load a bunch of samples that are arranged in different velocities, and once? I know there is a way, but i’m not sure how

Or, they're curious how many full kits are included, not just random 'this preset is just klavs across the board' or some bs "filler" like that

It's 196 fully usable kits of varying sounds, all set to standard kit layout

  • I still use drum computer for most of my drumming but I’m on the fence with one shot! The jazz drum pack sounds great on demo.

I wouldn't go that far as Logics drums sounds awesome, too. Generally speaking I don't think one is better than the other, they both have some great qualities. OneShot offers a lot more settings for the individual drum. OneShot can of course be used with session drummer. I'll make a comparison for fun as those are tough to get fair..

Thank you and please do post a comparison if you get a chance.

Have you tried loading in Drumdrops kits?

I've bought quite a few of their multi-velocity kits for Ableton when I'm on desktop, but haven't moved them over to iPad yet as there hasn't been a plugin that really takes advantage of their multi-velocities before this. I may have to scoop this up.

Not yet, but it's something I definitely want to try later

I have a handful of drumdrop kits* (full multi sample/velocity layer and round robin) that I use regularly on AudioLayer on iPad, but I havnt had time to dive into anything deeper than preset auditioning with it yet

*Honestly, til OneShot, AudioLayer and Drumdrops was the ONLY thing I'd found to quell my finger drumming needs on iOS. And with the minor use Ive had with this app so far, it's already going to fit the bill.... And overtake AL/DD for my recommendation for finger drummers both new and experienced that want a mobile alternative

In fact, it's the only rec I can give towards people wanting (just) a mobile alternative to desktop options for the same need

AL/DD is cumbersome for novice setup (got workarounds aetup for the lack of midilearning in auv3 in AudioLayer), but the only option... Until yesterday (ok, Beathawk is also good for extreme beginners that don't need any variance in kits. For absolute beginner learning, following YouTube vids, and no extra kits, Beathawk is still a good learning tool! But for everything else, this will probably be my go-to.... Assuming I don't hit any major snags)

  • Think we have discussed but is the app worth buying, to then sample and trigger elsewhere? Or is it best just triggering from one shot. Would you just be sampling free samples if you used different samplers to trigger ?

My ipad is probably full cpu.

I had to switch from 12 fac drum ( + 1 Fac drum for fills )

To 9 Fac drum ( + 1 Fac drum for fills ) and then add 3 x Blipbox. Which would make sense for 3 tom tracks ( as blipbox sounds Tomish, from INIT )

Just because IOS can only be 10 instance of an AU, iv read and you could actually sense, it were 10 and not more ( before reading this )

So that really answers the question of why apps are made, instead of module versions because without mix and match.

You would only have 10 outputs instead of maybe at least 16 ( of most drum apps etc )

A dev might have to make different coded modules with mix and match in mind, to get around AU limit.

How does this affect hosts like Drambo and Mirack ?

Can you have more of a same module vs multiple AU limits ?

  • @sigma79 i don’t understand what you mean re triggering. OneShot doesn’t have a sequencer so you have to trigger it from another app or pads. Or are you asking if you should sample every drum hit into another drum sampler like Drambo or Koala or something?? That sounds like a lot of work to me…

Using another sampler as the sample player.

This is the electronic drum setup but it obviously isnt acoustic sounds

Would you just have a different template going on ( so you dont have access to this template ) for the sake of nice acoustics.

Or see if an additional One shot, with multi out might be ok cpu wise ( which I doubt )

Or use sampler modules for acoustic, so can still use this template.

I think for me it may mean.

Either an acoustic template via host or use a different sampler to One shot.

If I didnt use an AU per track, the cpu would be ok.

  • I think its either or because even if using Drambo sample player ( not fac drum ) Drambo as a host dosent do all One shot does, as a sample host ?

Ideally id just load a sample to drambo sample player though.

Hmmm/oooooh, this app in AUM might be a nice way to get nice multitrack Lumbeat drummer tracks recorded... may just have to bite.

The ipad is just for drums though.

    Theres 3 ipad 9.

Its just where im using an au per track ( for drums ) because it does have some perks to have an au per track ( electronic drums more so )

Using the normal way an au, with another au ( multiouts would obviously be fine )

Perhaps it would also be fine ( the additional au ) added to what template is.

It is either triggering samples with other samplers or using One shot ( full screen etc )

  • @sigma79 In general, playing back a sample is very cheap CPU wise. Synthesizing a sound require much more CPU computation, so in theory FAC should be more taxing on the CPU, compared to OneShot. This assumes that OneShot is being efficient when you disable the insert and master effects.

If you want separate FX processing of each hit, I would use one OneShot instance in Drambo with multi-out (either to other tracks, or to layers within the same track). Multiout shouldn´t cost much additional CPU (compared to synthesis).

If you prefer to program drums in Drambo with one midi track for each sound, I would use a Drambo-within-Drambo instance for this, sending its combined midi out to the single OneShot plugin.

I suspect multi layers are some realism

    but how ?

Simple, different samples at for different velocity levels, and round-robins to change to different sample (still at same velocity level) to add some variation.

Think Lhitting a snare softly (low velocity) and hard (higher velocity).
Then depending on how the velocity scaling is done it crossfades between the samples.

This is really super basic sampling 101.

So round robins can only apply, with multi velocity samples?

No, the two are independent or can work together.

The way the velocity layers and round-robin work together is one of the best features of OneShot. I don’t know of any other app, desktop or iOS, that has this kind of implementation. It’s usually one or the other.
It effortlessly adds a more natural, dynamic style.
Say you program a beat with some soft, mid and hard steps, for example 20 velocity for soft, 60 for middle and 127 for hard… If you had 10 velocity layer samples that would mean it’d always play sample 2, sample 6 and sample 10. With the round-robin slider it’ll add variation ON TOP of that so that the soft hits might also play sample 1 or 3, middle range from sample 5-7 and so on. This adds a lot of realism and dynamics with no effort.
Talking about effort… you can achieve everything OneShot has in offer and more with Drambo. I’ve spent loooong hours getting Drambo mega-kit stuff together. But it’s just not worth it. You get a kit going with all the velocity stuff, round robins, chokes, etc. But then you want to add a new kit or trade some samples… it takes forever. Opening modules, browsing through layers, finding the button that sets the number of samples for velocity…. It’s ok if you want to do something super-specific but as a general-purpose drum solution it’s just bonkers. Same goes for any hack (script) for making the sampler in Logic multi-layered, it works but it’s a nightmare to maintain.
I’ve purchased a bunch of Drumdrops kits, they’re great, and given the lack of good IOS solutions for multiple layers and the effort aforementioned, I purchased the “minimal” pack. With just 3 velocity layers. With One Shot available I wish I had purchased the big packs.

Round robin, velocity layers, importing of full kits from other sources, apparently auto setup of said velocity layers and round robin

Splat to Clat is much more akin to Koala Sampler while this sits closer to AudioLayer and Decent Sampler

Splat to Clap has a great collection of sounds but the UI and workflow is terrible IMHO. It’s ok to fiddle around but if you try to get into details, map midi, build custom kits, it’s horrible. Also terrible implementation of the midi files.

    Hi.

    Its cool.

Fac drum as a synth is way lower cpu than most sample players and then other synth drums.

    10 Fac drums goes to about 50% ( ipad 9 )

    Sample players can be 20-30%

Sugar bytes drum. Can be maybe 40-50%

With my setup and all the niche questions asked.

    Didnt factor in latency anyway.

The drum ipad is at 1024 samples.

Not sure if it could be 512.

So you have to ask which ipad ( or worth it ) an ipad upgrade thats just for drums/bass.

No synths etc ( that would be another ipad )

So even it my drum ipad could run all my fac and blip instance, plus a one shot multi out.

Could only really sequence and not finger drum because of adding to a 12 au drum ipad.

So would have to either just use without all the other AU. Which I will because of swams.

But still be able to sequence create/trigger maybe the odd sample sent to another sample player ( or still from one shot )

It wouldnt be worth buying probably an m4 ( just as a drum ipad ) and the other ipads used for synths etc.

To run the 12 fac/blipbox combo for electronic ( plus better style of euclidean ) adsr shaping etc on the outputs on each track ( to name the main perks )

but also a one shot multiout, in same template

    at low buffer setting.

  • (Answer courtesy of Google Gemini)

  • To summerise.

    I will buy one shot

Hope the electronic drum machine made of 13 Fac/blipbox, with fx, bass synths etc at 1024 buffer ( on an ipad 9 ) does actually work.

Otherwise iv been going about a pointless drum template for years.

    If its ok

Its probably not worth buying maybe an m4 ipad. Just for the drum side of music making.

So it can be in same template as the other au and be low buffer.

You would just make another template or forget the au per track stuff.

AudioLayer certainly does (use velocity layers and round robin simultaneously). Been using it exclusively for finger drumming with kits off of Drumdrops for almost a year

However, I there's major hurdles in getting it setup... Until you learn the ropes. It's NOT beginner friendly. And no midilearn as a plugin (I believe stand alone does, but I don't use much outside of Loopy)

Decent Sampler I BELIVE has both implemented the same way, but that's only been a few weeks of use as I've been looking for more deeper setup finger drumming kits

AudioLayer: most kits I purchased thru drum drops has approx 30 velocity layers for most Main Used pieces (hats open, closed, snare) kicks are 25-30

Not sure about round robin numbers, but the velocity layers are visible on audiolayers main screen

However, OneShot is the most comprehensive, all in one, ready to roll setup for this process I've ever seen. And almost 200 kits built-in of all varying nature.... It's mind-blowing for my exact needs. This hits ALL on the head
