Audiobus: Use your music apps together.
What is Audiobus? — Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Type A - Vintage Enhancer by AudioThing (Released)
https://apps.apple.com/app/type-a-vintage-enhancer/id1663072241
Type A is a plugin inspired by the famous Dolby® A Trick technique. The original unit was designed to be a noise reduction system for tape recording (encode stage) and playback (decode stage).
Type A emulates the encode stage, which was often misused as an enhancer, dynamically increasing the top end of a signal without introducing artifacts or altering the harmonic content. The results are similar to a dynamic EQ which adds presence and air to any track in a natural way.
Features:
• Volume for each band
• Compressor Attack and Release
• Noise volume
• VU-Meter source selector
Standalone and AUv3

Great. Audiothing, never a boring release.
It’s out!!

This is actually very good, my 8-min walkthrough is here:
Excellent demo, thanks Gavin.
Interesting. I'm on the fence, even after watching Gav's excellent demo. I just don't get GAS like I used to lol.
Dammit I might need this too lol
Yeah, I was really kind of meh when I first heard about this. I've compared it with a few things now though and it really does make the highs sparkle very beautifully in a way that I can't quite get with ToneBoosters Enhancer or a few other things I tried.
Oh no, apologies 😂
Thnx Slush!
Downloaded and tested the desktop versions of both Type A and Type B and they just didn’t bring anything to the game for me (based on my own workflow). Hopefully others are able to use them.
im generally interested in exciters/enhancers, so this might be right up my alley
the aphex aural exciter vst is ace
and that noname hardware exciter i got from ali china really brings new life into old recordings. i use it to posh up old vinyl lps and it works great
this app might get interesting results for people who are into sampling old, crappy recordings and wanting to put some live into them
since i dont use waves plugins anymore, i found this free plugin that works pretty well on the old, dusty waves it put through it
https://plugins4free.com/plugin/3781/
so, yeah. i might get this one
Terrific 'special sauce' plugin. Got some specific use cases in mind but I feel like it could easily end up on everything like XVox, Spatializer, and MagicDeathEye.
Dev’s blurb says "The results are similar to a dynamic EQ which adds presence and air". Is this just a conveniently packaged way of doing that, or is this something else again? Sounds like something TB EQ could handle.
I’m trying to talk myself out of it, but wanting to be talked into it.
Good question.,.I need a reason NOT to buy it…I need to get Dials and the 80s preset pack from BLEASS omega first lol
Have a listen at what it sounds like...
Not gonna lie - I was on the fence about this one as I previously mentioned. But, then I'm working on this Trance track with a plucked lead like Paul Van Dyk, and the plucked lead kept getting sucked back into the mix despite the foreground inst buss being boosted around 3kHz and the background inst buss being attenuated around 3kHz. Tried some of the other exciters in my toolbox, and they were just too harsh on the high end. Tried waveshaping and saturation, and same deal.
So I said "fuck it, it's only a tenner, so I'm going to try 'Type A'". That did the trick and brought the plucked lead out of the mix and into the foreground. Okay, well played @audiothing , lol. I don't know what dark magic is in this plugin, but it brought the plucked lead out to the foreground where it belongs in the mix.
I keep trying to find other things in my app collection that bring out the highs in the very noticeable but very musical way that this does - so far no joy.
Exactly the same situation as me. It made my pluck pop out of the mix, loud and clear, but without it being brittle. It's what my plucked lead needed.
Just spent 5 minutes thinking it didn’t do much at all, then convincing myself it was making nice subtle differences, then realizing I had it on the wrong track.
I once send a headphone back because of the complete lack of soundstage. It appeared I still had set my host on mono.
It's all in the settings (and depends on your source material of course) 😊
I usually adjust such enhancements by ear and fine-tune again the next day.
I hate when I do that. 😂 Happens a lot more often than I care to admit.
First thing I tried when I got this was to see whether a high shelf filter would basically do the same, and I didn't like it as much. Tried again just now though, and yes, very close 😂 👍
😊
How gas gets you:
Like many, I've tried to curtail my impulse app buys, because I have maybe 600 music apps, most of which I will never be able to learn before death, some of which I may never launch again.
But my earliest tape cassette recording memories introduced me to the magic of Dolby noise reduction in the encoding phase only. I would never listen to Dolby NR encoded tapes with the post filter applied, because I loved the way the encoded but not decoded tracks would sound si bright. I could live with the noise.
So naturally I had to buy this. Just a nostalgic nos to my "misuse" of the technology of the time.
thumbs up, liking the app. Both for the sound and the memory.
Edit: indeed, the Dolby NR I was using was type B not type A, but my points remain the same
That's a fascinating take. I really like that this is up your alley for the nostalgia. Me, as I mentioned, it was more for mixing purposes to bring out my Trance lead, lol. Buying it was a last resort, but thankfully it worked out. But regardless of why we use Type A, it's a top quality plugin.
They have a type B app on desktop, which I would imagine we’re getting also.
Hi guys, I'm glad you're enjoying Type A! Just a few notes on how it works: the magic lies in the two higher overlapping bands. Without them, it would essentially function as a multi-band compressor. We spent over two years researching the technique, as well as emulating the hardware. You can learn more about the Dolby A trick here: https://www.audiothing.net/blog/the-dolby-a-trick/
As for Type B, it’s inspired by the Aphex Aural Exciter, not the Dolby B. It's a completely different approach. Type B will also come to iOS, hopefully soon
This is excellent news. Also, very interesting insight into what makes Type A tick. That said, as I stated above, I was on the fence, but once I heard how Type A pulled my plucked Trance lead out of the myre, I knew I had made a wise investment.
You can hear the plucked Trance lead right before the 80s breakbeat section of this track, rofl.
dude, that sounds great! i bought type a and cant wait for type b
Sounds very good! I have both already in the desktop versions, and they are great.
Forgive me for a slightly OT question: @audiothing - Any plans for an IOS version of Latin Percussion down the line too? I use ST-88 constantly on the iPad, and it would be wonderful to have LP also.
LOL!
