Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Piano Motifs Simprovisation

@azul3D_Apps Hi Fernando. This is the one I mentioned on X. I was trying to come up with something that simulated a piano improvisation by combining a lot of random short motifs. A “simprovisation”. I started with a motif using C Lydian (just an arbitrary choice) then added more using keys and modes that “should” sound good with that. It ended up using 48 short 4 and 8 bar motifs that I rearranged, a little at a time, over a period of a few days to try to keep the random feel. I used only Ravenscroft piano without any special effects. Just the default preset without any EQ or reverb, etc. I also used only motifs as generated by PM. Absolutely no edits. I’m still not completely satisfied with the end result, but I had to wrap it up at some point. I will probably continue to tweak this more in the future, but you get the idea. Has anybody else done this? If so, I would really love to hear it. Have a great day!

  • I like this Paulie. I don’t understand much about the writing but it sounds really good.

Thank you. I don’t really understand much about the theory, either. I just did a search for “what works with C Lydian” and took it from there. I was mostly interested in what I could squeeze out of Piano Motifs. I probably could have spent weeks on this, but I was getting tired of listening to it. Peace, bro!

  • Wonderful @Paulieworld, great how you can curate and the seamlessly stitch all those motifs together! Great work!

Thank you Fernando, but mostly thank you for your great music app. As you probably know, I don’t use any external gear, so I rely a lot on PM to suggest interesting MIDI content that I can play around with. I must have a hundred synths, but without something to drive them, they are of little use. I’m looking forward to trying some PM motifs in StaffPad. Hoping @McD can give me some guidance for that as he is the StaffPad master. Have a good day my friend.

  • Nice work, really enjoyed this one! frenq

Thank you. Dittos for your latest. Really enjoyed it. Cool jazz/rock fusion. I love Weather Report, Return to Forever, and Jean Luc Ponty. Some of the best live shows ever.

  • Nice work, @Paulieworld! You put those together in a very musical sounding way. Doesn’t sound auto generated. Piano motifs is such a nice app.

Hey @Dav. I think I could have spent a little more time on this. The transitions sounded a bit contrived and amateurish. Composition 101. But it was a fun little project. Oh well, I’ll make more.

I only thought the ending sounded unfinished really, kind of just stopped.

I agree. It was running about 3 minutes and I just decided to end it with a repeat of the opening motif. I think I could have done something more musically interesting, but my wife had some great tacos for dinner. Gotta love tacos!

    Lol, I fully understand that!

PM has good options for MIDI file exports. If you go the multi file route you will need to cut and paste the notes between scores that import a single file. There is no import to a specific instrument. But PM can export all 3 MIDI tracks into a single file that them imports to StaffPad.

I also keep the chords and export multiple variations that can be layered into something larger and more complex with cut and paste labor to get 6-9-12 unique parts. Huge savings in pencil editing.

  • Boy that must have taken you a while … lovely end result though.
Only comment is that a bit of variation re quiet / loud sections might have been nice. I know PM has an option for velocity which might have helped.
    Picky aren’t I 😊

I tend to agree. PM has a lot of capabilities that I don’t use as I probably should. One of these days I should RTFM. Oh well, it took a while, but it was fun and I had nothing better to do at the time. Don’t tell my wife I said that! Peace, bro.
