Dream Cartel vs JWM - Crystals at the Disco (Justice styled track in Koala)

So ever since hearing the two new tracks Justice released yesterday, I wanted to create something in a similar vein to what I heard. Somewhere between hard electro techno and disco. Then my mate @dreamcartel showed me his track "Crystals"!

I asked him if I could sample it, and he gave me permission. So I screen recorded the video, popped that into Koala. I originally planned to microsample this, but then I tried looping the samples instead (4-bar loop for the saw lead with hints of the crystal sound, 2-bar loop for the crystal sound on its own).

Then I loaded Koala into AUM for sampling purposes. I sampled the main bass from Daggar, the secondary bass from Chicago, the mellotron strings and Middle East plucked tremolo from Beathawk, and the piano from Marseille. For the drums, I used Linn Samples for the kicks, snare, and tom, and acoustic hats and cymbals from Sounds of KSHMR 4.

After adjusting all the sounds in Koala standalone, mixing them down in their respective busses, and recording the final product, it was off to Logic for the mastering stage. And voila, we got "Crystals in the Disco".

Thank you @dreamcartel for the permission to sample your work. This project turned out magnificently!

Anyways, cheers and enjoy.

Thanks mate! :) Glad you enjoyed.

  • This is right up my alley, with its crystal/digital soundscape, embroidered with electronic inputs… nice!

Good job both of you, @dreamcartel by pushing on and providing the canvas and @jwmmakerofmusic with yet another well-made creation!

🙇‍♂️ Cheers mate. That definitely means a lot! Yep, @dreamcartel and I had fun with this one. ☺️ His original track is very excellent too and lent itself perfectly to the style I was looking to create.

Thanks mate. ☺️ I'd argue this collab is only as good as its source material which I sampled. It's why I gave @dreamcartel top billing. I simply built off of what was already there. 🫶

Thank you so much! This was a lot of fun. ☺️ And the timing couldn't be more perfect I'd argue. I wanted to create a Justice-styled track in the same vein as "Generator", but with my own style, and @dreamcartel showed me his original "Crystals" track. I knew then and there it was meant to be a collab. :)

I don't have Zenbeats (never could get along with it), so I went the sampling route instead. And it isn't for a lack of trying Zenbeats a handful of times in the past.

I mean lately I've been using any app that catches my fancy rather than sticking to just one app. NS2 was used to produce "Night Sky" (unreleased at the moment, but imagine a Sia instrumental with autotuned vocals layered on top singing lyrics that were inspired by Glenn Frey). Then the instrumental for "I Love You", written by my late mother, was produced in Garageband.

This track was 100% Koala Sampler for me. :)

And one other thing...I'm currently planning my next track. Whether it's for my "Pop Era" EP or something else entirely has yet to be determined.

  • Okay, and my next track turned out to be somewhat like Rock and Metal, but entirely made of instrument one shots I sampled into Koala Sampler (as well as acoustic drum samples and this guitar solo I did in GB). Let's see, I sampled Santa Ana, Troublemaker, Redshrike, Wolfsburg, and Monolit. I actually sampled Santa Ana twice (once for a sustained guitar tone, and once for a riff, but the riff didn't sit well with the rest of the mix and so it had to go).

Vocals will be recorded into Cubasis 3, and I'll mix them into the instrumental. I'm just not sure if I'll vocode them, just sing them like Till Lindemann, or what just yet (I'll figure it out tomorrow). What I DO know is I will not autotune them this time. Autotuned vocals don't work in a Metal genre at all, even if the instruments are all sampled rather than live recorded. 🤷‍♂️ If Alestorm and Leo Moracchioli don't use autotune, I don't need to either for this particular production.

You know what? I think I'm going to put aside the "Pop Era" EP (which is right after I put aside my "2005" EP) and will work on a "Koala II" EP instead. 😂 Truth be told, I really enjoy working in Koala again. It's just so accessible and easy to make stuff in.

  • Super catchy. Lots of variety that keeps me guessing… what’s next. Great production that sounds superb in my headphones. Nice one, Jim!

Thanks mate. :) I really appreciate that a lot. It also sounds great in the car as well. (I did the car test, lol.) Logic really is the ultimate easy AI mastering solution. Even if I don't use Logic for anything else other than Mastering Assistant, unlimited AI mastering is worth it at $5/month for that alone as opposed to $5/track elsewhere.

Rockish track update - so I tried to do "death growl" vocals for my upcoming Rock-ish track, and while I did them correctly, my voice is too high and tenorish to make them sound great. So instead, I'll be using a vocoder. Hell no way am I using autotune in a Rock-styled song that sounds like Prodigy, even if all the one-shots are sampled and the instrumental was produced in Koala Sampler. Daft Punk use vocoding in their music all the time, so that's what I'll use. I have a clear vision for the vocals now.

  • The car test! I do that a lot. If it sounds good in my Toyota Corolla, I’m good with it.

I have spent a lot on mastering apps, but none have really done much for me. Nobody listens to vinyl or cassette these days. I think you should just trust your ears, your instincts , and your gut. Have a good one, dude.

You too mate. :) Yep, I trust my gut, and my gut tells me Logic's AI Mastering Assistant makes my mixes sound better and gets them up to -14 LuFS, lol.

  • By gum, Jim, you got a real toe tapper there!

  • Rockish track update...I'll do the vocals tomorrow. Think I'm going to work on a new track in Koala, or at least start one.

  • I haven’t logged in since Christmas but I just saw this : what an awesome track dude !!!

Thanks mate. :) I'm glad you enjoyed it. Koala really is shaping up to be my main creative tool.

I finished the Rock-ish track today, but it will be released on the "Koala II" EP I'm creating. I did the instrumental in Koala by sampling in one shots, loading in drums, and performing a guitar solo in Garageband that comes after the second chorus right before the ending.

Then come the vocals. Holy...sh-t, that's all I can say. 😳 I did the "demon growl" speaking vocals and used TB VoicePitcher to pitch them down 4 semitones (so it sounds proper as my voice is very much tenor, not baritone, despite how deep I tried to make my voice sound). Except during the chorus, there are a couple lines that are vocoded.

While the whole track evolved into Industrial Dark Metal that sounds like Crystal Method attempting to replicate Rammstein (the incidental rock guitar sounds kinda cheap given it's a oneshot sample), the guitar solo from Garageband sounds more like something Santana would do. 😂 (I wish I knew of some decent guitar pedal AUv3s on iPhone and would've just ran a clean electric guitar through that in GB to get the right tone.) Although it doesn't sound horrible, I'll say that much, lol.

I also finished another track today that's called "San Juanito de Mi Tierra". And as you can guess, it's Ecuadorian panflute music mixed with a Reggaeton beat. Entirely created in Koala Sampler and mastered with Logic Pro. The pan flute sound was sampled from Lagrange into Koala and not from a rompler!

Now I'm trying to figure out what to make for my fourth track. No idea yet. So far, we have...

-French Touch ala Justice (heard above)
    -Industrial Dark Metal
    -Ecuadorian Flute Music/Reggaeton

The last thing I want to make is a bloody Lofi track right now. 🤣 Would you believe "The Lofi Lounge", a simplistic throwaway track, is STILL making gains on Soundcloud?! The one track I consider just so-so, and everyone seems to love it. 🫨

I think the Nembrini stuff works on iPhone. They have their free Crunck amp you can try. If your going to buy get the Cali Reverb for that Santana tone or metal guitar.

Have you tried playing with the Halion guitars? They are decent for samples.

I did have a play with them, but I'm not sure how to sample that into Koala via AUM.

I thought I had made it clear that you created the original mate. I even gave you the top billing. Seems like you took down the original from Soundcloud. 😳

Somewhat crestfallen that though he didn’t actually tag him, in my mind @GeoTony (by saying “Loved the original” in a thread where @jwmmakerofmusic enthusiastically mentioned the original authorship numerous times) was literally doing the very thing @dreamcartel suggested that nobody was doing. Cries. 😥

Not a clap back, just trying to empathise in every direction. It just goes to show what a challenge communication can be, with the best of intentions. Hugs, everybody.

My friend : why do you THINK I quoted Geotony - because he did exactly that

My thanks to him for the recognition

I’m not concerned with clap back, but the reply was a bit misdirected in all honesty

    Love to all :)

(PS @jwmmakerofmusic you def said it; it just seemed to go without any notice that’s all; I appreciate you saying it)

OMG, well, apologies — just goes to show how true indeed my comment about the difficulty of communication was, haha. I didn’t get your meaning at all, mainly because the statement “No one shouted me out for writing this” didn’t seem supported by the actual contents of the thread, especially given @GeoTony’s comment. I thought you were upset that he didn’t mention you by name!
