Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

Pros + cons of LP standalone vs. AUM/AU

I recently made a live template in AUM using LP widgets to control everything. Kept having to reprogram it bc all midi msg bindings would reset. Noticed a fix in the last update, but it got me wondering if I should just ditch AUM entirely.

My rig is pretty simple (sax, EWI, vox, AU synth+sampler) routed thru Turnado-> LP-> Turnado. I’m in a band so I only need 1 or 2 loopers, controlling Turnado is more the priority.

I love AUM and am comfy in it but am open to LP standalone esp as I loooove dem widgets and know programming them will be easier (and hopefully more permanent).

Obvs metering is better in AUM, and its native preset system was actually the best way to possibly recall the correct LP instance when I was slogging thru programming a few weeks ago. What else would I miss?

Curious to hear any feedback on using one vs. the other… ✌️👽

It just comes down to preferences. I'm in Loopy only now 90% of the time because it does everything I used AUM for plus has all the control possibilities and of course ... Looping.

    But.

AUM is more intuitive and fast to set up from zero. I'm not super fond of the instrument, fx, midi fx, and routing setup process in Loopy. I can't say I get that "ok, cool, lets set something up!" feeling in Loopy like I do in AUM. If it wasn't for AUM I'd be totally happy with Loopy's setup process, but AUM just flows in that regard. For a quick noodle with no purpose in mind, or for quick tests and troubleshooting of scripts, etc, I gravitate to AUM.

Other than that, I don't see anything lacking from AUM in Loopy unless you're into complex audio or midi routing. And if you invest just a little time setting up some templates with frequently used plugins and routings, starting up a Loopy Pro session is 99% already done.

I am curious what you prefer about AUM's preset handling system? I find Loopy Pro's to have additional benefits..like being able to set up dials to step/cycle through presets with a tap or a midi message.

I initially thought I'd mostly use Loopy as an AU in AUM but now use Loopy most of the time. I find being able to put together a custom work surface to change AU parameters without needing to open the AU is very handy. I often set up buttons or dials to change a number of parameters in different AUs all at once.

And I find the automatic freeing of resources of muted instruments and effects helps me get the most out of my iPad 6.

  • I use LP as my main host all the time now.

There are a lot of reasons why but one I like is using a single instance of an effect on multiple channels without needing it to be on a bus.

Echoing @espiegel123 on the custom control surfaces. It’s just too powerful for me personally to use anything else as a host. I have momentary buttons controlling a lot of AU paramaters simultaneously. Sure I could do it in AUM too probably but LP is just too easy to do stuff like that.

  • I get the sense that because loop is in the name, some people are hesitant to ise it for non-looping applications...these days, I often think of it as a host that happens to also be able to record.. and recording can be looping or just capturing a live jam...or a linear DAW-like arrangement.

  • Thanks so much for the replies!

I haven’t delved into LP as a stand-alone very far as of yet so I don’t know the full power of its preset system etc, but this thread has def pushed me over the top to give it a try.

More context: I got a last-minute NYE gig playing sax and had to learn a bunch of tunes in very little time. I was also determined to use my new iPad/AUM/LP setup for the first time (and no laptop…finally!).

On top of cramming, having to redo all of my bindings over and over wasted sooooo much time and reminded me of the super buggy days of fighting with TouchAble (control surface app for Ableton).

I knew in the back of my head that LP was prob the way to go… I just needed a little motivation to ditch AUM and dive in to the finer points of LP as a host.

    Looks like it’s time for a major LP learning/programming sesh…thanks to y’all!

    Most appreciated!

  • @alienjournalism : here is a post in another thread with a link to a small project with some useful preset tricks.

btw: if you ever run into an issue in LP, please report it. Michael is pretty conscientious about addressing reported issues.

I resisted LP as a host for a long time. I can assure you, time spent building an environment for your musical needs will pay off in dividends and it’s something you can work on sporadically over time.

I just took up the Tenor sax last year! I regret not doing it earlier.

  • I hope its ok to post here something that I posted in another thread.

Something that is easy to do in Loopy Pro is put together composite "presets" where a press of a button can change the preset and parameters of any number of loaded effects and synths ... and you can set them up to easily step through them. Say you have a series of complicated effect changes in a song, you could set it up to advance through them with a single button if you wanted.

FWIW, this is my current "pedalboard" page. It gives me quick access (all of which is MIDI learnable) to the things that I most frequently access while playing. The green buttons on the right are "super presets" that change a number of effect presets at once. The dial at the left is set to toggle between my clean and dirty guitar tones with a foot pedal. Holding the pedal switches the behavior so that tapping cycles between the "super presets".

@espiegel123 would you be willing to share this Loopy Preset for reverse engineering? I'm still learning it and trying to put together .y pedalboard Setup. I have ToneX also so that would help a lot. Thank you so much!

  • @Tones4Christ : here it is. After you look at it, I would be interested to know what aspect of the template wasn't obvious.

Wow! I'm interested in that. Would you be willing to share the template for this pedalboard canvas? I might not have all the apps you have loaded, however. I would like to see how you load these auv3 apps in your mixer (which channels, etc). I'm still new LP.

  • Concur, ditched AUM and used LP only since it came out! So amazingly customizable

  • You can’t just ditch AUM because there is no substitute yet. For mixing and splitting signals, this is the best tool we have on the iOS platform.

Even in desktop Logic Pro, you are unable to send signals from in between the inserts in the FX chain. You even can’t use simple multi-output from the FX chain. If you want to do this in the Logic you need to use multiple unnecessary channels and every other trick in the sleeve.

AUM MIDI routing speaks for itself.

Regarding mixing, I love Loopy Pro, and I’m sure that it will be there very soon. Michael is the most active and diligent developer out there, it’s just a matter of time.

@alienjournalism, in your case, controlling Turnado with all the possibilities that LP offers is a no-brainer to me. ;)

Ditchin & shmitchin. AUM was brutally left in the dust and kicked while down, spat upon. And farted on.

Nah jk :D :D Respect to AUM, my entryway to ios magic

Thank you so much, I really needed this rn!

I’m about to enter a new pedalboard era…just got a Nektar Pacer for Xmas (replacing my janky FBV express mk2) but haven’t set it up yet…needed to make this DAW decision first. I’m stoked for it tho, it’s like a combo of my old FCB1010 and Softstep v1 topped off with main reason I got it: the customizable LEDs.

On second thought, it’s more like an era of likely having the most compact, powerful, and useful live rig I’ve ever had. Nice!

Only hurdle after this will be recreating my Ableton sets in Launchpad or RemixLive or whatever, but that’s more tedious busy work than anything…

Just using the stepped dial for PC was so great, and that was using AUM presets, even. So I’ll be easy to impress :D

  • @espiegel123 that template project is so inspiring, thanks for sharing it!.
Clear, precise and to the point. Love it.
Great pragmatic approach. I believe the practical approach might guide the choice of Hammerhead as the rhythm app. It has a wide range of sounds, integrated sequencer and, most importantly, scene selection midi is pre-mapped.
I would have gone for Drambo, but probably not a wise choice for a template, as I believe I’d have to do the midi mapping every time, for every preset. Brings me back to how I haven’t found a rhythm app that is “just right”. Digistix would also be a good choice as scene changes are also fixed midi mapped, but I can’t stand the UI…
Also love the “preset” approach. Have some different sounds ready and just get to playing fast, you can always fine tune later.
Again, thanks for the great template!.

No problem. I look forward to seeing what people come up with once they start thinking about the Loopy as controller aspect of things. I have only scratched the surface. Hammerhead is looking like a nice complement to Loopy. I am trying to think up some ways of integrating it into a song-looper template I have been fiddling with.

Really grateful for you sharing your preset! I reverse engineered it to see how you created it and as a guitar player your thought process on effects etc!

I tweaked it big time! It was way too advanced for my needs lol!

So I have a Red button called Lead that triggers the OD & Pitch widgets. These 2 widgets the OD & Pitch, each toggle an effect. For OD, I have BYOD preset for Tube Screamer and for Pitch, I have BYOD set to Poly Octave!
    I love it!!!!

For my swells, I setup a Swlls Widget which I wish would lit up like my Lead one does but I can't figure it out. Well, I set that one to trigger Delay, Reverb and Shimmer widgets. Each of those widgets toggle an effects like K7D delay, Blackhole Reverb and Shimmer Reverb from Eventide.

I also set up the Tap Tempo widget and it really works with Loopy Pro!!

This is the most amazing app ever created man! Thank you so much @michael.

I also created empy extra pages to serve as Songs within my set, but I still can't figure out how to copy the entire Config page to the other pages.

Here's a pic of the setup.

You can also create a new page that is a copy of the current page by long pressing the + button that creates a new page.

The Swells widget is a dial. Dials don’t light up. If its action works in a button, you can set it up as a button.

To copy things to another page, select them by drawing a rectangle around them and copy. Then go to another page and paste.

You can also create a new page that is a copy of the current page by long pressing the + button that creates a new page.

Is 5 pages the max you can create? I have pages up to E and the plus sign is gone. Also, hoe do I set a different BPM for each page?

Never mind, figured out how to see the plus sign again? Need to be in edit mode. Lol

But still can't figure out how to save a different BPM for each page. I'd appreciate any help.

Figured it out!!! In Control Settings under ProjectnWide Follow Actions!! Every page has option to adjust Tempo and many other items! Love this app so much!!!

@espiegel123 that template project is so inspiring, thanks for sharing it!.
Again, thanks for the great template!.

add an adjust tempo action to the select page follow action. Get to project-wide follow actions via the Control Settings panel.
