Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Download on the App Store

Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

  • Thanks Doug! About to head into work but I’ll watch this when I get off. Question: were you able to import your own samples? I’ve been trying but it won’t work for me.

  • @HotStrange I didn’t try that yet, I’ll try that tomorrow.
I did record some hardware synths into it though, that worked great.
I’ll let you know how I get on with the sample import 👍😊

Great, thanks for all the work you do 🙏

  • We can always rely on you to put something together quickly after release Doug!

  • @HotStrange I can’t get it to import samples or loops either, It must be a bug I think, it will probably get sorted in the next update, hopefully 🤞

  • I had no problems importing samples in via iCloud or AudioShare link unlike some users so definitely a bug for certain users !

  • @thesoundtestroom @Jumpercollins thanks! Sucks that some of us are having issues but I’m glad I’m not the only one. Hope it gets sorted as that’s the only reason I can see myself keeping the app. Without sample import it just isn’t worth 1.1 GB of storage for me.

  • @Jumpercollins I can get that far, but you see the wave file called Sespence, that is dull and can’t be imported.
Can you show me a screen shot of the sample browser with your samples in it?

Hey Doug, just checked, I can't load aiff, wav or mp4 files from anywhere in the Files app, definitely broken here. How tf does a dev this big bring out a product that a lot of time and thought, and presumably money, as gone into, but with such a massive release version bug and with zero decent marketing to boot, madness...

It’s baffling. Especially considering what few marketing videos and descriptions they have released both mention the ability to import your own clips and loops as a big selling point. But then, it just doesn’t work lol. Did they test the app before release at all?? Kinda considering deleting it just because of this.

  • @Gavinski Thanks for confirming, definitely a bug then.
I can record hardware synths into it, no problem and select whatever inputs I like from my interface, which is a Steinberg UR816 C, and it records midi with no problems, so all that works.
Hopefully it will get a quick fix

  • I’ve checked everything else and it all works as expected.
I imagine loads of people are complaining at them so it’ll probably be sorted.
The export options work fine too.

Is there an email? I couldn’t find one earlier.

You have to use their website support page if I remember. Anyone having problems should email - it's always a mistake to assume that others will do it. In fact, the bigger a company, perhaps the greater the chance that everyone will assume 'somebody else will do it' @thesoundtestroom - a kind of digital equivalent of 'the bystander effect' 😂

  • I just had a good look round and couldn’t find an email either, although I’m probably wrong😂

  • I found the contact spot but it’s making me create an account just to open a case and it says I need an active subscription, contract, or support code to open a technical support case. Same for general customer support.

I definitely managed to message them the other day via their support. I had registered my email but that's it. Can't remember the exact url I used but it was definitely just on their main site

@thesoundtestroom @Gavinski Even though the files are greyed out if you hit “OPEN” top right in the files app browser in my case I’m looking at some one shots (see bottom screenshot) it allows the files to show up inside the Sketch browser. (See top screenshot).
Import what you need just drag and drop and move on. It’s definitely broken as you have to do it every time.

    Ah, useful, thnx Paul

  • If I'm not mistaken the 'browser' just wants access granted to a folder it can view in the built-in browser.
This is why there's only 'open' and no file can be selected...
...similar option would be super welcome in the Logic Pro for iPad browser as well :sunglasses:

This, exactly. I keep various packs of loops and samples in a high level folder in Files. Opening that folder in Sketch reveals all the sub folders in the browser. Super easy to navigate and audition and much simpler than using Slide Over in Logic.

Yes I see how it works now. You can just open your whole On My iPad folder for example and get access to everything from there. Neat, just not what people are used to on this platform

This method should be THE 'standard' for more apps that support any kind of import of audio :sunglasses:

Now that I understand it, I agree. OK, protools ftw (apart from their marketing dept 🤪)

Both Sitala and Koala Sampler (The Samples Tab) already use this method...
It's relatively straight forward to implement so I do hope more apps will follow suite.

The only gotcha with linked content is project sharing where all the linked items need to be embedded before exporting the project. (This is partly why Koala copies the samples into the project file when saving a project so it can be shared and Sitala also saves copies of the samples as part of a kit but only when the kit is exported).

The core 'functionality' (ie. linking to files and folders anywhere on device) has been around since iOS13 but it's stability has greatly been improved with more recent iOS versions but adoption has been SLOW!

I try to push for linked files when ever I get the opportunity...

We'll have to try to spread the word then.

    It's out now, I didn't know that ...😁

Edit: Now that I tried it for my self I can't see what so revolutionary good about it: I can't reach AudioShare where all my stuff is. If I choose My iPad it only serves up a few folders. iCloud looks okay but I don't want to move all my AudioShare files there as it will fill up a lot. So again, what is so good or am I completely stupid (that do happen)

  • I think that this is precisely how the import folder is supposed to work as commented on above, actually, it's really clever how they have done this because once you import the sample/samples you need from the folder you need, it deletes that info from the Browser, saving on loads of unnecessary storage with the app, cool.

  • Non existent support anyway.
Not wasting a second on anything Avid related.

  • Wow thanks for pointing that out @Jumpercollins

Feel kinda silly for not trying that yet. As @Samu and @thesoundtestroom said, it should be the standard. Saving all that extra memory (as Sitala does) is really welcome. I guess Sketch is better than I thought 😂

If they add a sampler or AU capability we’ll really be cooking with fire 🔥
