Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Download on the App Store

Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

Just to be sure I’m not missing anything that hasn’t occurred to me, am I right in thinking there is absolutely nothing to be gained by preordering this app as to just purchasing it when it is actually released?

I haven't found anything to contradict that. Wouldn't it be a bummer though if you skip the preorder and then the price is double when released 😳😂

Just imagine! I think they’ve been very clear about the price though fortunately, 19.99 it is and 19.99 it will be.

It is a bit weird though to have a preorder which offers no benefit whatsoever. I mean, don’t get me wrong, they absolutely don’t need to sweeten the deal - they have an almost guaranteed success on their hands - but you’d have thought they could chuck in a free brush pack or something small just to make the preorder special in some way?

Not sure how easy it is to add in bonuses like that. I suspect it's not possible. I've only ever heard of pre orders giving pricing discounts.

It is a bit strange, but I think a) the app is sooo ridiculously cheap already b) people will order pre-release anyway, just out of excitement or to help them rank highly in the charts. Tbh though, surely this would be number one anyway, in the entire appstore, and they would have been better not doing a pre-order, as that way they will perhaps actually be less likely to dominate the charts over a longer time period. Who knows. Either way, in today's market $20 is laughably cheap for a one off purchase for sth like this, so not worth puzzling over too much either way!

Yeah, i agree, certainly not something I’m wasting my time thinking about, I just wanted to check that I hadn’t missed something.

And yes, $20 is an amazing price which I’m extremely grateful for. That said, it’s a canny decision on their part - even with computer aided tweening, animation is a lengthy process (unless they’ve really reinvented the wheel somehow) so keeping the price low will allow people to buy it out of curiosity…and then perhaps never really use it after an initial play. This, I suspect, wouldn’t happen if it were, say, $40 so I think they are very much targeting maximum profits overall with their pricing not doing us all a favour. In other words, price low, sell in vast numbers; as they’re almost guaranteed to do and has worked so spectacularly well with Procreate.

Still, personally, I’m very grateful to them for keeping the price within reach!

Yeah! Let the curious bring down the price for the people who will actually use it. I'm probably in the former camp, you in the latter - thank me later 😂

Ha! Indeed, thank you if that is the case!

And I know animation takes a lot more time than most people would anticipate. However, just as ProCreate is a top-level art creation app that cuts through the b.s., I'd imagine ProCreate Dreams would have the same ease of use.

The realtime drag and record will be great for cheapo/fun AI bash Terry Gilliam styled animation.

Maybe the South Park guys will move production to iPad Pro and churn out new episodes in a mere 3 days instead of 6...

The robots may have them beat soon.

God...I hope the writers win. That was painful to watch.

If the writers don’t win it’ll be very difficult for me to watch any new movies or tv shows.

There's one thing we have that AI lacks - ingenuity. Maybe popular media will be overtaken by AI, but we in our own little corner of the net mostly make music for each other to listen to and enjoy and to post for others to enjoy as well. :)

Well, tbh, that's not really true. You can give AI prompts to do creative things like 'Make some humorous names based on the names of famous Star Wars characters, the names you create should have references to body parts'

The results can be hit and miss but sometimes are quite good.

    Example:

Obi-Wan Kenose: A wise Jedi master who has a large nose that can sense the Force.

Chewbacka: A hairy Wookiee who has a lot of fur on his back.Chewbacka: A hairy Wookiee who has a lot of fur on his back.

Being creative, in a way that humans find interesting, basically involves making associations between things that have some degree of novelty and also a degree of familiarity. An AI can be trained to do that for sure.

AI can be a fantastic aid to creativity for creative people though, and, at least for now, it seems we need human interlocutors who are good at giving prompts and sorting the wheat from the chaff, tailoring things to fit their audience etc.

People still want connection with creators, but I believe they can also make connections with AIs. It's not much different from the connection that people can make with fictional characters, like Luke Skywalker. I fully anticipate that we will have AI idols who will be adored as much as or more than any of the pop or rock or movie stars that people obsess over today. Both are at quite a remove from the fan and the relationship is mostly mediated through screens, and augmented by the fan's own projections into the idol.

I love this topic, it's fascinating, and I personally am finding AI an incredibly useful tool. Interacting with AI stimulates my intelligence and creativity in fresh and exciting ways!

Couldn’t agree more. And people are too worried by what ai can do rather than excuted about what they can do. If you’re good at something, ai doesn’t stop you doing it. Be thankful we’re not professional chess or go or poker players as then we really would be doomed.

With reference to my earlier comment about whether they could ‘reinvent the wheel’ for less experienced users; I’ve just been reading about the Performing tool which is present in Procreate Dreams and, while not completely revolutionary, it really will make animation a lot more accessible and quicker to produce!

Yeah, you can move things with the timeline recording, pretty cool. I've seen some beta testers demoing and it looks good. Now, animation is very time consuming even with tools like this so we'll see how long it lasts for a broader audience/user. I will get it although I know it's high risk not getting used. I have had Callipeg for 2 years without producing more than half a project 😂

I agree, this is a great feature to have but ultimately the time will still have to be put in to make anything half interesting! Excited to try it though.

For someone wanting to get freshly into animation, is there an app on iPad that would be best for that? Would Dreams over complicate things?

ToonSquid and Callipeg are excellent apps but you also have thousands of "lesser" animation apps with various quality. Dreams might be easier than any of them but that remains to be seen. But, and again, animation is long time projects however and whatever you want to do.
@AudioGus (I think it was?) did some fantastic animations in/with Procreate, I'm not sure how and I think he gave up on it in the end, which is a bit sad. Curious on his thoughts on Dreams(?)

ToonSquid can do some really cool vector animations and has a moving camera to animate, it's a really cool app and not very expensive. Take a look at some videos for it and you'll see what I mean. Callipeg is more traditional "Disney" fram by frame, excellent app as well but for pro's I think (I nver really befriended it)

Oh! That timelapse painting, heh forgot about that. Yah, it was mostly just a vehicle for some NS2 tracks. Most of my Procreate stuff these days is just random quick sketches to toss into Stable Diffusion.

Wow I wasn’t expecting it to only be $10. That’s not a bad deal.

One of the main things I really want to do is have somewhat purposefully bad animations of my own that I can then add my own music too. Mostly just for the fun of it and will probably upload it to YouTube as well. Does ToonSquid allow you to since music or will that have to be done in iMovie or elsewhere?

Yes, Toonsquid will allow you to add audio , I bought it because I thought Procreate Dreams wasn’t going to work with my IPad, turned out to be a really nice animation imo. I think the developer did a great job. I put a pin in it until I see how well Procreate Dreams works but for anyone who’s IPad it doesn’t work with it I definitely recommend Toonsquid

I must admit, those pipes are monumental work, so revisiting them you can make it even better. I could bet on it. 😌

I started to count days for the Dreams. I thought that preordering would make me forget, but nope. 🫣 I bought my first iPad because of Procreate.

  • Dreams WILL let you have audio with the animation, right?

  • I’m so excited for this one. I feel like this will make animation much less of a pain in the ass cos the Procreate app has so many features to expedite the process of drawing on iPad
