Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Sampling instruments from Garageband (iOS)

All, I've done a thing with Garageband (iOS) that I believe not even Pete Johns has discovered :-)

I'm regenerating a project from my earliest days way back in 2021 when I started out using Garageband. Cubasis is my Daw now.
Exporting Midi is possible in GB with MidiTapeRecorder, and Stems too by soloing and 'sharing' tracks, but GB Instruments that you can play in another Daw are more challenging.
(note: I don't have Logic and didn't want to commit to it just for this)

The solution I found is to use Audiolayer Mfx in a Garageband plugins slot on the instrument you want. Then use the sampler in Audiolayer to create the instrument.

I couldn't get the Autosampler to work, so I instead created a track with evenly spread notes and sampled each one by playing the track then using Record Audio with manual Start and Stop, then stopping the transport and repeating for the next note.

This all worked really well, but takes a little patience and effort.
So, if anyone else has a better way of doing this, let me know!

This seems like a nice work around. I’m pretty sure there other solutions. I can imagine sampling those instruments being an interesting process.

  • Yeah, I've done more of this. It works best with non-Alchemy instruments as these are just samples anyway I think, but if there's an instrument in GB that you absolutely must have and you don't want to port the track to Logic then it doesn't take that long with single velocity samples at intervals of 4 semitones or similar.
