Config help needed AKAI MPK/Roland SE-02

hi everyone-

New to the hobby and just picked up an Akai MPK Mini and a Roland SE-02 (no keyboard).

My hope was that I could use the MPK to control the SE-02 through GarageBand, but after some trial and error I'm seemingly not able to do this.

Both are connected directly to my Mac via USB. The Akai works as a controller in GB despite not being seen under Settings > MIDI devices, but the SE-02 is nowhere.

Is this config even possible and if so, what am I missing?
