Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Download on the App Store

Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

TripleTech has released an iOS replica of extremely rare Ukrainian preset drum machine, Pulsar.

edited April 2023 in App Development

More than 30 years ago, the “Pulsar” – preset drum machine was produced in Zhytomir, Ukraine, at the Elektrovimiruvach military plant, which was famous for its electronic musical instruments such as synthesizers, electric organs, electric accordions, drum machines, signal processors, guitar effect pedals, and other musical devices (Altair-231, Estradin-230, Solaris-314). The release of the Pulsar was an exciting and incredible event for the region as nothing like it had ever been produced before (different models of the Pulsar were made in early ’90s).

In 2023, a team of audio developers and sound enthusiasts from TripleTech paid homage to Ukraine’s cultural heritage in the field of music technology by creating an iOS replica of this remarkable hardware. This iOS version (iOS drum machine) gives the “Pulsar” preset drum machine a new pulse in the digital world.

The features of the Pulsar ES app are fairly standard compared to modern equipment and pioneers in Japanese music technology. However, the Pulsar can still serve as an excellent vintage rhythm base for various setups and music production styles.

Consequently, Pulsar ES is a new iOS drum machine that simulates the Estradin Pulsar model, the first preset drum machine of Ukrainian production. TripleTech has replicated the original hardware instrument “as is” along with its pros and cons, with some added features such as FXs, MIDI Out, and Ableton Link.

Here are the features you can find in the TripleTech iOS app replica – Pulsar ES (which is 95% identical to the original hardware):

“Imitator” has 8 pads for recalling 8 drum sounds (bass drum, snare, hat, clap, 3 toms, crash). It also allows you to improvise and play over the embedded rhythm presets.
“Rhythm Selector” includes key groups “Enter Rhythm” to select the preset rhythm. It can dynamically switch between different rhythm presets in real-time.
“Start-Stop” knob with a flash indicator shows the step/beat and allows you to play and stop the drum presets at any moment.
Slider knobs for “Level,” “Tempo,” and “Accent.” “Level” adjusts the volume level, “Tempo” changes the track’s tempo, and “Accent” adds emphasis to pads of “Imitator”.
“Rhythm Number” indicator shows the number of the current style and allows you to monitor the playing rhythm preset during a session.
“FXs Pulsar Panel” includes different effects such as drive, reverb, and filter.
“Ableton Link” technology helps synchronize Pulsar’s beat/tempo across other applications, hosts, or devices.
“Midi In/Out” is a feature that allows Pulsar ES to send and receive MIDI messages to and from external MIDI devices, such as keyboards, synthesizers, drum machines, MIDI-enabled instruments and other iOS applications.
Pulsar ES includes 64 preset, non-editable rhythm patterns with different variations that cater to a wide range of modern musical styles. These preset rhythms include not only popular genres such as rock, reggae, house, and techno, but also authentic styles like hopak, polka, kazachok, rasputin, bosanova, jumbo and lezginka.

By purchasing the app in the App Store, 20% of the sales will be donated to Ukrainian support!

Predictably electronic music owes so much to the defence spending and yet predictably again I’m making a point of it.
However, completely accidentally last night I started working on an Euclidean drum machine for Drambo. I have the first prototype and it works great and even has fills!

But thanks for showing me this google thing, looks useful

  • Their website shows other apps but the App Store link goes directly to apples own website and the Pulsar is the only thing showing right now. Maybe those are future projects?

Just downloaded it, trying the AU now inside AUM. Got a pretty great old school sound set, Lo Fi, with background noise, some seriously wacky rhythms and drive, reverb and dj style filter fx. It is preset only but you can address the individual pads via midi. Not as capable as the equally old school, far more capable, but IAA-only FunkBox, but still has its own vibe. Trying Rozeta xox next.

Update: yup, works. Pattern 00 is a hi hat metronome, doesn’t seem to have a completely silent preset, but you can overlay the xox hits onto that pattern (or any other). Sadly the effects are not accessible for lfo messing, and there’s no way to chain or sequence the presets either that I can find. The pads remain live for playing as the pattern cycles.

Side note: makes a great companion to Glitchscaper

I’d see no problem if there was an off topic section exclusively for the banned/deleted lot. Just text, so wouldn’t do much to @Michael’s storage but would certainly help them release the rage.

  • Sucker for vintage drum machines. I’m in no questions asked.

Thanks for joining us and replying! Looking forward to it :) MRBPM looks very interesting.

  • @Tony2023 : Hi! Enjoying the app, thank you!

Could I suggest you consider adding an entirely ‘blank’ preset in, so we can drive the app entirely with an external rhythm sequencer like Rozeta xox? This would get round the apps’ own lack of song functionality. In a similar vein, it would be great if you could expose the FX knobs to external midi so we can automate tweaking them with something like Art Kerns’ MIDILFOs. And if it were possible to use the same to automate preset number changes too, even better…

  • Anyone else finding that this sounds great standalone but is glitching like crazy in AUM?

It sounds great actually, real retro goodness, both in the UI and the sound, albeit with the obvious need for the features Svetlovska requested above. But unless the glitching is something specific to my device etc, it is literally currently completely unusable as auv3 - unless you like your retro gear emulations with an added dose of digital distortion 😀 - so you may want to hold off on that purchase until others report back and / or the issue gets fixed.

Aw man that’s a bummer :/ I was pretty excited for it. Hoping some others will chime in here. I guess in the very least I could use it for samples and making kits in Sitala, but it would suck if the issues never get addressed. Thanks for the tip, though! I’ll hold out for now.

Exactly, hopefully it will get addressed but I'd say it's wise to wait for now. Particularly with a new developer with no track record it's better to err on the side of caution.
