Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

  • @qqq thanks for the mapping template, will be very useful!

If you see yourself using Twin 3 as a mono synth, I don't see much reason getting it over Drambo + Volcano (I even made an instrument rack for this). But Twin 3 gives you flexible polyphony (and unison) which is hard to pull off with Volcano.

You could probably route multiple instances of Volcano to individual voices, I'd be curious to see how well it performs. That would open things up to a wide variety of oscillators.

And wow those mappings must have taken a while to map together!

They took a long while yea :D also there is a bug in Drambo right now so you can't expose over 70 AUv3 knobs without editing the raw XML file for the Instrument Rack. So it took extra long :p

    Thanks for your detailed answer:)
I’ve been playing around with your Volcano 3 instrument rack. Interesting to see how well organized it is. A lot to learn there for me!
I guess I have to wait for Buttersynth getting released since its wavetable editor seems very interesting. And then decide if the simpler with great filter Twin 3 or the versatile Buttersynth are worth buying.

For sure :) glad the rack is useful. Sometimes I get a bit too neurotic doing rack layouts, but my hope is that it makes them more useful for others.

Btw, googling ButterSynth the beta link came up https://testflight.apple.com/join/FGk5TUkB so if you wanted to test it out its there

I might check the beta out.

Would any OdysseI users comment on whether Twin 3 is of a similar caliber as far as "character" is concerned?

Caliber of character? Totally on par or even above. Similarity of character? Much less so, but still firmly in the vintage subtractive synth camp. The Odyssei (worst spelling idea ever) is so iconic at this point that it’s nearly synonymous with squirrelly, cutting leads. I’d say the Fab is decidedly less squirrelly, though you can get there with the Raw and Extreme filters.

I've been enjoying using Twin as a screen free polysynth. It didn't take much to create a 4 oscillator MS-20 in a preset with some midi and modulation mapping. You can imagine how things are setup on the Launch Control, and I've got 2 pages on the Launchpad as well. Basically everything is mapped to hardware? First time i've been compelled to do this by an iPad synth, and adjusting the ADSR and the filters on the big knobs and faders is such a different experience than hitting them with the apple pencil or missing with fingers. I'm playing the synth with a Korg Trinity as the midi in. It's the right amount of simplicity and depth for me right now to enjoy playing it alot!

Nice solution! Yes, lovely synth, the ios interface is a definite fail though. Anyway, I passed on my criticisms to the team, they admitted it wasn't perfect, accepted the constructive criticism very gracefully, and said they would look into whether any improvements could be made. Let's see, fingers crossed.

  • Woo finally got it for iPad for free thanks to my nicotine addiction cos zyn gives out $25 iTunes gift cards. I do hope for the UI to get updated a bit lol it’s much easier to use on desktop

  • Yeah there’s definitely some much needed attention in the multi-touch capabilities of Twin 3 (or I should say lack thereof)

I was like really? You can only adjust one thing at a time?

  • Can’t select presets when using with GarageBand via StageManager on external display.

But it sounds so good I’ll tolerate the futsing around dragging it back and forth from iPad screen.

That’s my feeling 😂 I love the sound so much, I deal with the fidgety, finicky interface… I do like the look though

Yeah the sound quality is really incredible and makes the issues very bearable haha. This just absolutely drips analog deliciousness. It seriously rips acid like my werkstatt can

  • Final verdict: Love it

+1 more than I initially thought I would :sunglasses:
It's surprisingly easy on the CPU as well when using multiple instances...

If I don't want to read all the thread, can someone tell me if there is a plan for a FF bundle with this synth in it?
    Thanks

  • Is there a way to modulate one oscillator with another for some fm stuff or is it all just with the sync knobs?

Twin 3 can do ring-modulation between oscillator pairs.
XLFOs go up to 500Hz (It's possible modulate the XLFO frequency with keyboard tracking).
While not super high it can be used for some fm-type effects.

The strength of Twin 3 is the sound, filters and the modulation options.
You can add as many LFOs & Envelopes as you need which is nice.

It's by no means 'complete' but very good at what it does.

Okay that’s what I figured, thank you. I’ll mess around more with the xlfo but ultimately I think Drambo will come to the rescue. Yeah the synth is fantastic, I really can’t get over how good it sounds and I’ve lost interest in most other VA synths on my iPad after getting this one

Same here, I'd say that they complement each other nicely (ie. Drambo and Twin 3).

XLFO is one of my particular favorites in most FF apps.
It's a very handy combination of LFO and Step-Sequencer but I miss a 'one shot mode'.
Also a true multi-point envelope would also be nice to have...

Drambo can do a LOT but needs a bit of patience when building stuff...(Ringmod, Sync, FM etc. is super easy to do).
I'm particularly fond of Drambos WaveTable oscillator and its endless chaining of Wave Effects.

    Cheers!

I believe FF shot it down due to App Store challenges, but maybe enough requests will help them find a way 🤷🏽

According to an email I received from support it is coming just not sure when.

    Oh, that’s great news!

  • The way I look at it the only strong, real difference between subtractive soft-synths now-a-days is with mod source and destination options. The more the better IMHO, and Twin 3 so far delivers in that respect. I’m not crazy about the drag and drop function because it is a little bit fiddly, but other than that Twin3 is clearly one of the best iOS subtractive synths for sound designers, given that you can modulate almost anything with almost anything and its top notch filters. Preset only musicians not so much. Personally, it’s been five years since an “IPad synth” has inspired me so much.

  • For those who waited,Twin 3 seems to be included in the creative bundle now.

For me not really a benefit it seems. I have all apps in the bundle and adding Twin 3 would cost me 89,99€.

Hmmm it wants to charge me £75 to complete the bundle :o ... also it's a new bundle rather than an addition to the Creative FX bundle, so maybe it's not set up properly to take account of existing purchases yet.

… and 89,99€ (while the app is 29,99€ alone) on the french appStore 🤣

    Ah thx didn’t know that.
    Yea could be the case.

  • If the apps are part of 2 bundles, the App Store doesn’t apply the amount spent in both bundles to prevent getting double credit.
