Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Just discovered this, too. I get a greyed out window with none of the MIDI plugins visible. On tracks that had MIDI effects prior to V3, some plugins open as expected while others open as white screens.

The midi import is nice.. too bad the AuMfx part is broken…. can do great thing with Drambo’s Mfx here..

Importing Lumbeat’s Drummers Midi exported files to ZR1 is great.. looking forward to the Mfx fix..
    Thanks.

  • I think the dev said they were on the MIDI fx issue

  • Thanks for all the replies!

  • @MatthewAtZenbeats Hi, after updating, Zenbeats takes 3 to 4 times longer to start up, even with internet connection turned off. Anyone else experiencing this?

FYI, my ~3yr old iphoneXSmax takes about 7seconds to start Zenbeats v2. However, for ZB v3:-
    iPad mini5 ~ 24 seconds
    iPad Pro3 ~ 30 seconds!

Also, all my devices are on iOS 15. I’m actually working on some projects right now & wont be updating ZB on my other devices until the start up time is fixed, in comparison Aum & Cubasis start up almost instantly, as opposed to the 20-30seconds with the new Zenbeats

    Thanks

About 50 seconds on iPad 8 iOS 15.5. Version 2 never started up much faster. Not a showstopper as far as I’m concerned.

Still need to read all of these nicely detailed posts.

But one thing I'l be trying to surmise is.... what does Zenbeats compete against? I know we're talking DAW. But which?

Thanks for the reply :) Did I read that right? Not 5seconds, but nearly a minute to startup!? That’s insane!

One of the things I love about ZB(v2) is that I can load it up quickly & experiment with different ideas, but this v3 update has broken that for me. Cheers

(beware that by "compete" I mean trying to address the similar needs, not necessarily that it has the same capabilities or whatever)

On desktop, it seems to try to compete with Bitwig and Ableton with the LoopBuilder + Timeline views.
On iOS I think it doesn't really compete against any in this kind of head-to-head competition, but tries to bring the same desktop mentality to a portable screen.

And where it shines for me is having the flexibility to do both, so I can sit down on my couch and do whatever I want on the iPad and transfer to the desktop when I want to use a keyboard and mouse, use samples from my HDD or whatever.

Do I NEED this flexibility? Hardly, I could accomplish the same by bouncing stems from Korg Gadget and loading them on Reaper or whatever, but I really appreciate having the same workflow everywhere.

Kool! Thanks for the reply :) I still can’t believe it takes that long to load on the newest IPad, when my 3yr-old iPhone loads v2 around 7 times quicker. I’m actually v.patient IRL, but when it comes to getting ideas down quickly, I turn into a beast if any (perceived) ball baggery gets in the way. Cheers

I have submitted a help desk ticket on this issue. I had the same problem last year with version 2 and the Zenbeats team promptly resolved it with an update. Hopefully that’ll be the case this time.

  • 12 seconds on my old Air2 (iOS 13) , so for newer devices something is wrong

  • Tested here on my Air 4 (iOS 15), around 16 seconds based on screen recording after clicking on "Exit Zenbeats" and reopening.
About 5 seconds were spent on "Updating preset collection".

@gdog do you perhaps have many preset packs downloaded?
I'm not sure if by "update" it could mean loading the presets you have in your device.

If not, is there any specific step(s) where it seems to spend more time?

We're looking into this and will hopefully have a solution in the near future.

Having been in software field for awhile, Zenbeats smells like they are doing good Agile Product Development. Don't deliver everything at once. Do an "MVP" release to catch early adopters. See what gains traction. Keep iterating.

And being truly cloud-based with strong implementations on a variety of platforms could a big win for everyone. We'll see.

Gimme a ZenOP1 for less than $2k, that would be nice.

  • @MatthewAtZenbeats , there need to be some work done on how AU plugins is displayed in the plugin window, plugins UI is being cut off and you can't scroll the window.
Also look at SampleVerse to much wasted space, especially when loaded on desk top, load it on iOS when plugin window is selected and you would see.

in the meanitime check the floating AU window in settings
Agree with SampleVerse , it needs a refresh , at least you should be able to scroll on empty space

So to the folks that are fully into Zenbeats..... what is it that you find most attractive? Especially compared to any alternatives?

I haven't jumped into with both feet yet. Overall I think highly of Roland. But this is a new game.

    Thanks

I was a “linear daw” user until I stumbled upon Zenbeats. Clips are so much fun to work with. Besides that:

    • drum sequencer. I can’t stand doing drums on a piano roll. You have nice sequencer apps (polybeat, octatrackt) but Zenebats implementation is very well integrated. It’s also got unique stuff like velocity jitter which is super useful. And finally on v3 we have probability which is a must must,
    • Audio file preview with real-time strech. This one is huge and I think exclusive to Zenbeats. You can preview a sample in context, in time, with what you’re playing so picking up a nice loop is no5 a hit/miss operation. The time stretching sounds real good too.
    • Proper “looping” in linear mode!. Almost forgot about this one. It’s an absolute must for me in a daw. If I have an audio or midi sequence such as a loop I don’t want to copy and paste 20 times!. And what if you want to edit it later?. Zenbeats extends the loop on the timeline but it’s just one copy.

    🤣@ball baggery.

Now I’m a bit curious as to why it takes almost a full minute to load on new iPad Pro if others have instant loading on older devices.

Has anyone found better results deleting and reinstalling? I don’t want to go thru that but I will if instant loading is to be had.

It could be unrelated to the hardware and iOS version, but instead have to do with the number of AU plugins, number of installed packs, number of imported samples, number / size of saved projects ... lots of possibilities. It's probably a mistake to assume it has to do with hardware or iOS version.

It loads in about 20 seconds on my Air 2. But I also don't have a lot of packs and don't have a lot of samples imported.

  • FWIW I'm also getting the slow start-up times (around a minute, M1 iPad Pro), and I noticed that my audio interface sits there blinking for a large part of it, like it's initializing itself over and over again, or like Zenbeats is testing different sample rates or something. The screen reads "loading drum sounds" as that's happening if I recall correctly.

Oh and if I unplug the iPad from the interface startup is much quicker. If I plug the interface in while Zenbeats is at the Home Screen, it crashes. So it seems to me like maybe something has changed with how audio interfaces get initiated. Others seeing long startups, are you using an external DAC/Interface?

Another update: the hang-up is definitely during the "Loading Drum Sounds" step. And, if I start up Zenbeats disconnected to my audio interface, open a project, and then connect the audio interface, it does not crash, but it does hang up for a long time initializing the interface. So this is not a way to get around the startup lag

That’s probably it. I have tons of AUs and packs. Dangit. I was going to import a bunch of my own samples and loops but I’m not trying to wait 5 minutes to get to it.

I have a lot of AU's. I'm guessing it's the samples. If the slower device has lots of samples and the faster one doesn't, that would tend to back that up.

Roland can probably do some optimization to better deal with large libraries. Sometimes it just takes a bigger user set than a beta team to flush out issues like this.
