Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Ladies and gentlemen, I have not been lying. Zenbeats is a very powerful DAW.

    Try it.

Haha it’s a fantastic DAW. I’ve been spending time in Logic lately and I do like it, but I move around so much more quickly in ZB. Feels more like home haha.

What did you think of Combustor coupled with ZC1?

Just went to try it and it’s not showing up in ZB for some reason. Might have to restart my iPad 🤦🏻‍♂️ I always forget how good ZC1 sounds

Edit: still not showing up. Seems like I’m missing a few.

Edit again: just realized I haven’t scanned for new plugins in a while. Doing that now.

  • Anyone having issues with Zenbeats making no sound at all? It’s happened to me twice over the last couple weeks or so. Not sure why. Doesn’t produce any sound in any saved songs, ZC1, drum sampler, loops, etc. Not even any sound when previewing sample packs.

Known issue that can happen when you leave Zenbeats open and close your iPad, or when shifting a lot between apps that use the iOS audio engine. When using Zenbeats next time there is no sound because the connection is broken with the iOS audio engine.

Solution is to go into settings > audio and restart the audio engine. Another one is to close Zenbeats correctly, not leave it in idle.

Thanks! I think that’s what happened as I left the app while it was scanning new presets. I’ll screenshot this to save for later if/when it happens again. I don’t often leave the app once I’m in it so I guess that’s why I haven’t experienced it much

That’s one thing that shows what programming level Roland is on: it still has a real menu with “exit” program properly

    It’s so streamlined yet powerpacked

I still wonder what “touch mode” enables?

  • @fearandloathing

this is because ZenBeats is multi platform app - it’s same on desktop .. all menus at 99% same

I know @MatthewAtZenbeats has answered this somewhere and as I recall it had to do with MPE controllers… perhaps allowing control in Zenbeats switching it on or off?

    /DMfan🇸🇪

  • Oh, that makes sense like expressive mode/touch mode

So this is MPE compatible hardware wise as well; very nice

Wim was not kidding when he said the loop function recording is so easy to work in: WOW! What a workflow man, so simple

That’s it sorry cb3 but ZB is where it’s at

When(hopefully) this gets multi core it would so become to me absolute gold

    /DMfan🇸🇪

Touch mode changes a few things in Zenbeats. 1. Touch mode on, enables additional editing tools whenever you tap on things like a midi note or a pattern. 2. It changes the fundamental behavior of selecting and interacting with certain items that make using it without a mouse easier. For example, patterns are selected via a touch up or mouse up. This allows you to do things like touching and scrolling without accidentally moving patterns in the timeline view or notes in the midi editor.

  • When I first learned that Logic is available I thought about dropping Zenbeats, but when I learned that Logic is subscription only, I changed my mind.

I am sounding like a fanboy but I get why when you go Roland you are happy with it

I don’t have Combustor but I was messing with ZC1 and (Electrosynth) but call me crazy but Roland synths are right up there sound wise with the rest . I found myself almost looking to work within Zenbeats to look or find synth rather than looking through the one I bought seprately. Maybe it’s not as tweakabile or as advanced as buttersynth but for someone like me who isn’t a synth head specialist I sort of wish I got Zenbeat before Moogs

I can’t wait to try out Turnado in here, hope it’s as fun as combustor

Yeah ZC1 sounds fantastic! Sampleverse is great too! What always surprises me is how good some of the horns and strings are.

  • @DMfan finally used Combuster with ZC1 and it’s fantastic!

  • Two questions:
Can you send Loop parts to the timeline? (Sort of like how in BeatMaker you can “paste to the timeline”)
How do you import a sample/wav to an audio loop part? I know how to do it for the main timeline, but I wanted to know if you can import a wav into an audio loop part?

Also, if you want Beat Scholar to not play in Part A, and come in on part B, how do you do that? Do you do an automation and set volume to 0 or do you make a blank pattern in beat scholar and midi trigger with a note? Not just beat scholar but hammerhead or pulse or any drum machine that is set to play with the host ?

  • @fearandloathing said:

Yes, the fastest way is to tap and hold on the transport's Record button to invoke the record mode menu and pick Record to Timeline. From there, you can record all of your Song parts over in real-time

How do you import a sample/wav to an audio loop part? I know how to do it for the main timeline, but I wanted to know if you can import a wav into an audio loop part?

To import a loop or sample into a loop cell, simply select the empty loop cell, tap the settings/gear icon, then select Import Audio file

Bonus Tip: You can drag and drop any audio clip from an audio track to a ZR1 Drum Track and it will add it to the kit. 👍

Do you do an automation and set volume to 0 or do you make a blank pattern in beat scholar and midi trigger with a note? I think doing a simple automation volume would be best here

yes, just copy clip in loop mode

then tap ob empty area of timeline ans paste it in

    it works in both directions

Ooooo now i am REALLY impressed, this is FANTASTIC feature .. being able to prepare ideas and basic track building blocks in loop mode and then just record whole performance into timeline in real time - AMAZING !

Didn’t experienced such “game changer” moment for years …

Have you been able to paste/record to the timeline as Matthew indicates

Some how can't get working recording automation by tweaking auv3 plugins knobs.. i have activated automation recording but knobs tweakis are nit recorded (tried 3 plugins - Butter Synth, Combustor, Cascade - no success). Or ZB does record realtime tweaks just from stock plugins ?

Actually I finally got it; you have to press play from pattern A (not the transport)

  • Why isn’t automation working ? The entire timeline printed , including automation, but i dont hear it on playback from the main timeline. I tried to record a new automation to the main timeline and it also didnt sound. > @dendy said:

am I supposed to enable something?

  • If you click record automations on the main track, arm it, and then arm the track you want to have automations on/modulations on; and you must RE record the automations for it to play back. So unlesss I’m doing something wrong, the main timeline needs its own automation midi information…please correct me if I’m wrong

Most GUI knobs of external plugins do not pass through to our automation recorder. It's a known issue. Try going to the Parameter View of the plugin and record it from there.

  • Any pattern automation should record over to timeline as pattern automation

Wait what, ZenBeats supports MPE? To what extent? (EDIT: I guess perhaps not the internal instruments huh? ok fair enough)How come nobody knows this? I mean obviously present company acknowledged, but by nobody I mean, for example the listing of compatible software and hardware over on Roger Linn site and KVR, and on Roli https://www.rogerlinndesign.com/support/support-linnstrument-recommended-sounds
    https://roli.com/mpe

Can anyone vouch for the implementation?

This may be about to get got then by me.

Ooooh please say the drums could be MPE if not now in future?? One thing somewhat missing in the world is MPE responsive drums (excepting Roli studio drums). That would be mayhem if Roland themselves had MPE version. Rename my Linnstrument EgyptianLoverstrument.
