Ah - you read WSWS too!

I read Breitbart to get my daily fix of right wing nutters and then WSWS to get my left wing fix. One needs a balanced diet :-)

Yes, it’s gotta be the only way to have a holistic understanding of the situation. I’m in the UK right now and media bias isn’t as obvious as in my native Poland where main TV channels slam the opposition at every opportunity. I used to live in Italy for a while when Berlusconi was in power and it was similar there too.

It’s easy to dismiss RT as Russian and the BBC as western propaganda. The combo of both is what you need with massive filters on. I actually quite like Al Jazeera for my daily digest. ;)

There is a significant difference, in my opinion, between RT and the BBC. While the BBC may have a slant, it is not a full-on propraganda channel in the way that RT is. While one has to be aware of its bias, I think it is false equivalence to equate the BBC and RT as being equally at odds with reality.

You are putting words in my mouth again mate. I’m starting to think you enjoy internet squabbles.

You said: "It’s easy to dismiss RT as Russian and the BBC as western propaganda. The combo of both is what you need with massive filters on"

The logic of your argument seems to be that the biases balance each other out...which implies a certain equivalence. Maybe you didn't mean that, but that is how your statement comes across.

Nope, I never said that they balance each other out. I just said that critically assessed news from different perspectives give more balanced view of the world than being purely brain washed by media coming from one side of the argument.
Even so I wouldn’t view the bbc as some kind of gold standard. They are still the voice of the British government and whatever their agenda happens to be. The BBC rather than reporting outright lies prefers to omit certain events. This may portray them as better but perhaps it’s just more cunning. Not massively dissimilar to Trump vs Obama. Ooops, am I going to be told that they’re not as bad as each other?

You are misattributing my motives for posting.

I think we are living in a dangerous time and misinformation and misunderstanding pose a greater threat to society than at any point in my lifetime. I think discussion and attempts to get to the truth of things is important. It is important, in my opinion, to question things that one finds questionable. Sometimes, one learns something from the response and sometimes the other person will either learn something or consider a different perspective.

That was tongue in cheek. I think we’re mostly in agreement. ;)

Come on..I never implied that the BBC is a gold standard. So, bringing that up is irrelevant and seems to imply I gave that impression.

I said that both the BBC and RT were biased but that RT is in a whole other ballpark.

You might not have literally said that they were equivalent, but I hope you can re-read your words...which I quoted earlier...to see that they could easily give that impression.

I am not sure why you choose to be sarcastic at me. I may have challenged your point of view, but I don't think that I have been disrespectful or insulting. Sarcasm doesn't help understanding. IMO, being sarcastic to someone who is trying to have a conversation with you in good faith is insulting and undermines whatever point you are trying to make.

It feels like you are trying to win something rather than come to some understanding or to clarify.

I have zero clue what your Trump/Obama mention means or implies.

I haven't been able to shake this from my mind. I've been under no impression that things like these would not happen, and have been happening in other parts of the world. It's still hard to remain detached when you learn of it and put the human face on it.

Yes, or the family that was killed trying to leave when there was supposed to be a ceasefire, or the four unarmed civilians murdered returning from delivering food to a dog shelter. People queuing for shops, or delivering medicines. There are many many more...

A ruthless and deliberate targeting of civilians. War crimes everywhere. And for what exactly? To make Russia "great" again?

  • Maybe it was just a peace keeping truck.

  • Yet another example of the world wide corrupt system, the ‘elite’ members of society can cry foul, whilst millions of the worlds poorest are just collateral damage.

  • The Russian army is just a complete shitshow, they've lost another very senior officer and they're communicating on civilian mobile phones:

A bit of a gut check below. Well explained and sheds some unwelcome light onto some of the reasons for the Russian leadership’s perspective. Before going off the handle watching it, note that it is made clear that nothing justifies the invasion.

As hard as it is to hear, I appreciate the balance.

  • Whilst there is some confusion on the matter of spirit of the agreements made between East & West, none of the actual signed agreements have been violated.
This article sheds more light on the matter.

If a solution is to be found, to bring about a peace, these matters will need consideration.

Russia actually signed a treaty to guarantee they would not attack Ukraine if Ukraine gave up its nukes. The non-expansion of NATO was never formalised in a treaty.

Besides, no-one forced the Eastern European nations to join NATO, they did it voluntarily. If you believe that sovereign nations have the right to self-determination then they should have the right to decide freely what alliances they enter into. Russia doesn't get to decide, and believing they should is just caving into imperialism.

True but NATO could have turned down the requests, couldn’t they?
