Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Any IR Cab Apps that are AUv3 Compliant

Hi,
I am an electric violin player.... and I was wondering if there are any guitar cab IR type apps that are AUv3 compliant?

In my Fractal Audio Axe Fx, I use the cab and IRs to add a woody/earth shape to my electric violin that makes it sound much closer to a natural acoustic violin.

Thanks!

There are a few. THAFKNAR and Impulsation are two popular ones.

They are general convolution plugins and aren’t restricted to cab IRs (neither supplies the cab IRS themselves).

  • Thanks for such a quick reply

I wish there was a way to contact the developers (MIDIculous) of ImpulStation. 50% of the reviews are bad, complaining they can't import their own IRs. I realize developers are busy and it's tough for small time companies to manage hundreds or thousands of users.....but there's no help documentation, no demo videos on youtube - by the developer themselves.

The app has been out about a year and there's only 4 reviews shown. Something just doesn't seem right......OR.....there aren't many guitar or bass players that realize they can use this load their favorite cab IRs.

It's only $14 ~ but it seems very risky.

    I appreciate your reply!!

  • Sadly the vast majority of users never bother to rate these apps.

IMPULSation is perhaps easier to load IRs, but Thafknar has a wildly supportive fan base here.

Perhaps part of that is due to the fact that the developer is wickedly quick at responding to any issues forum members have with his app.

Use the forum's search. You will find lots of useful info on these apps.

  • You can reach him @polaron_de

This thread should answer any questions you may have regarding IRs into Thafknar:

Personally, I prefer IMPULSation for the touches on the UI, making it a bit nicer to use. I tried Thafknar when it was relatively new and I didn’t like it at the time. I’ve imported plenty of IR files into IMPULSation, but haven’t really focused on IR files for simulating cabs.

When I first started using IMPULSation it was a bit confusing how to properly import IR files, but after I learned how to use their interface it got easier.

  • THAFKNAR is highly optimized. It lets you load two IRs (handy for blending two cab IRs such as a close and room IR or close and rear IR).

I believe it is still the only convolution app that supports true stereo to stereo IRs (true stereo to stereo requires four channel IRs created for stereo to stereo). This isn't relevant to cabs but is great for reverb if one has a collection of true stereo IRs.

The u.i. is barebones but the app works great.

Come on people. We all know that the purpose of a convolution app is for staring at and basking in the ambience of a beautiful interface. I mean sure, it can probably do something to sounds if we put them through it, I think. But does anyone really care about that when it's just sitting there wanting to be enjoyed for what it is ... a scintillating work of graphic art?

I'm not sure I believe it, but I've heard that there are people who don't even look at their IR app once loaded. I guess I shouldn't be so surprised. Musicians can be a really oddball crowd. Thafknar is probably more suited to that fringe element, I guess.

  • Thafknar. Best 3$ I’ve spent last month. It has some learning curve, though

  • +1 for Thafknar.

Also if you haven’t seen it -

    https://www.3sigmaaudio.com/items/category/strings/

  • Given the success of IR cabs in HX Stomp, it would make a lot of sense for one of the combo apps to add this to the offering: MixBox, Nembrini, Rhino (beta), Tone Stack

Or for Line 6 to port their Helix Native app to iPadOS...

  • @mojozart TH-U can import your own…

I suppose if looking at a poorly designed interface every time one uses it isn’t an issue, like using Windows instead of Mac, then Thafknar is the only choice. 🙄

It does! How does this compare with Thafknar or that one with the cool UI?

  • @mojozart TH-U is a fully featured amp and fx chain sim (with its own internal cab IRs, but you can bypass and us with THAFKNAR or load your own). Currently the “best” offering for guitar amp sim in the opinion of many. It’s AUv3.

The difference is that there may be a performance hit if you are just looking to do cab IRs without the rest of the amp sim etc. I use Thafknar with Nembrini chains and other times I would just want to use IRs. On the other side of things, TH-U has an amazing file structure system for IRs if you end up purchasing a massive IR library such as from Ownhammer. You just load the zip file and it retains the file structure, which is a lot easier to navigate compared to other IR loaders.

IMO you can’t go wrong with either. THAFKNAR is $3 and well supported. TH-U is free and has the AUV3 cab IR loader functionality built in, and it also has all the best an amp sim and fx chain could offer…but obviously you pay more for the full ecosystem in the IAP.

  • @mjcouche Thafknar also imports zips and retains the structure.
Is the IR loader available in the free version of TH-U?

It seems to be available in all cabs, of which some are free.

You're right. I just imported some IRs in my free copy of TH-U. This changed somewhere along the way, because I believe the IR loader was first introduced as a separate module. But now it's integrated in the generic cabinet controls.

  • Anyone have any links that point directly to some good and free guitar cab IR files?

    Thanks

The IR loader in th-u iOS was always free. Before their new IR tech came out (Fluid Convolution), there used to be a cabinet called “IR cabinet” on desktop where you could load them, but on iOS that IR cab was a dummy cabinet that never came to fruition. Then when Overloud introduced the new IR tech on desktop, it came to iOS as a free update. IRs can be loaded into any cabinet component from the free demo or paid bundles. It’s honestly a bit strange to me to have 50 cabs that can all load the same IR identically, but it works.

Thanks for clarifying. That dummy IR cabinet is what I remembered, and I hadn't kept up with the changes.

  • Great to know about the free IR loader in TH-U. I don't like that app and it's a huge download if one was only wanting to use it for IRs, but yet another selling point for the app, which virtually everyone but me seems to love.

    Since you are a UI guy 😉, I understand…

I hate to say it 'cause I'm not, but the UI has something to do with it, but that's a minor part. Mostly I'm just ... odd ... I guess. I tried no less than five times to like it. Deleted every time. 😂

  • I don’t think I’m the only one who feels that the Ownhammer (r)Evolution bundle is as good as cab IRs get and all you’ll likely ever need. Not free but so worth it, IME.

I agree. The Ownhammer IRs are so much better than the zillions of free IRs that downloaded early on. I didn't realize how much better a good IR makes things sound for a long time because I wasted my time on some of those free IR collections.

  • Thanks, folks!

agreed. and the $8 (r)Evolution 112 RECT VTP-12A which is not part of the bundle is a nice way to check them out:

The amount of files you get is crazy
Frankly you will never be able to check them all , if you are busy making music .

I like 3 sigma audio , simply for the way the arrange their stuff .
