Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Download on the App Store

Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

Sorry if that has been answered, but the thread is getting rather long.

Is there a way to export and share presets? I made one the I would like to share, is there a way to do that? Don’t seem to be able to find the file in the file system.

    Good question?

Try using iCloud and see if presets appear there.

    Edit:

I’ve had a look at my iCloud and there doesn’t seem to be any presets there either.

  • As a workaround, I wonder if it would work to load VS into AUM or Audiobus, load the preset, then save and export the session to share?

Good idea! Going to try that.

I’ve finally started digging into VS. I understand most of all the functions now… not 100% but getting there.

One thing that’s got me tripped up is that I don’t understand how to use the 2 envelope generators. I can’t tell if they work together or if it’s an either/or situation.

Can anyone explain how you might use both of the EGs and how you could obviously see the effects when setting each of the EGs 1+2 radically different from each other?

    Hmmm....

I've now watched 5 demo/tutorial videos on VS including one made by Imaginando. In all the the videos they only use one EG (if at all). In none of them do they use the second EG2.

I had assumed that the reason for 2 EGs is that you can have them each set differently and easily switch between the two while playing live... but, they don't seem to work like that. Unless, they're supposed to work like that and there's a bug?

Still trying to figure out the purpose and use of having the 2 EGs in VS. Any of you VS power users have an idea how and when both EGs can/should be used?

What's the purpose of having a 2 EG's in a subtractive synth? Typically one is connected to the amplitude and the other to the filter cutoff.

Both EG's are triggered by the notes at the same time. Each one has its own settings and what they affect its totally up to you, using the modulation matrix.

You might want something to be triggered at the same time but with different attacks and releases.

    Does this make sense?

These notes from the manual shed some light on the EGs

Note: by default EG1 is set to modulate layer BRIGHTNESS parameter in the modulation matrix. This allows a layer to be “played” with notes on/off when TRIGGER mode is set to MIDI. When a note on event is received, BRIGHTNESS will ramp from 0 to its level, in ATTACK time. You can change this at any time in the matrix modulation panel.

Note: bear in mind that the EG is just like an LFO, a way for you to have a signal that can act as a modulator. But while the LFO is always running, the EG needs a trigger to activate its attack stage, and another trigger to activate its release stage. Then you can use it to modulate the available parameters in the matrix panel.

It does make sense, but this isn't what I'm seeing. For example... I set the EG1 to move the visual on x axis. I also set the EG2 to move on y axis. The attack and release are set the same. I'd expect when I hit a key, the visual would move BOTH on the x and y axis'. But it doesn't. It only moves one or the other. Not both.

I'll play some more to verify, but it doesn't appear that both EGs 1+2 are being activated together. It's usually one or the other.

Again, it could be I'm mistaken and confused (likely) ;) but it doesn't seem like they are working on my iPad Pro 10.5 install as you are describing.

Yes, that's indeed a good idea and workaround.

The mechanism we currently have available is to export the local bank, but when we tap the export button, nothing happens. It seems to be broken. I have already opened issue to be fixed on 1.2.1.

Please pay attention that media files are not being exported and even if the project was saved, let's says, as a AUM project, the paths to the media files (background images or videos) will probably be broken.

I just checked again. It’s working as you have described. User error! Sorry! I didn’t actually have y selected. Both were mistakenly set to x.

I just tested all over again and it’s behaving as intended and expected. I also had one eg set to a positive position with the other eg negative, thus canceling each other out.

I’m not sure how I got myself that confused, but I certainly made it much more complicated than it actually is.

Thanks for getting back to me!

  • @sinosoidal Love this video, by Michael NervOus showing of VS with Gadget.

We should be able to do this in 2022

VS can pretty much do that, except the image layer can’t be modulated (i.e., “bounce”). I agree that would be useful.

Yes but even this is getting old now VS would have to accommodate several images at one time to be cutting edge.
or even an animated layer effect would be cool too.

We might be able to provide a way to have more than one background image. We just need to take care of custom materials first.

Not at the time being. I can foresee that in the future, but not in a near future. This is because of the underlying platform we use which is currently tied to OpenGL.

more materials? maybe sold as IAP’s? It’s a matter of taste, but currently i’m using only one - bit-for-bit - so VS is not real tool for me (eg for live visuals on gigs) . But I love simplicity and power of VS. I’m dreaming about shaders / materials like shadertoys
