I think the future of electronic instruments is in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Merely describing a sound to a machine learning system or providing a collection of inspirational sounds could result in it being created automatically for the musician to then play. A person could instruct their system to synthesize a new instrument based on elements of a cello and an opera singer and then fine tune the results, for example.
