Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Download on the App Store

Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

Synth and Fx recommendations (newbie)

Hi at all  as the title says I’m a newbie looking for Synths and Fx apps recommendations.
I recently bought an iPad 6 for cheap to make some electronic music (DnB,Electro, minimal,Dubstep,Ambient).
As for the DAW i tried GarageBand but i dont find it that much intuitive ( a bit more used to Fl Studio). Maybe theres a good alternative?^^

Thx for any Tips  Nathi

  • If you are looking for a good all in one solution check out Drambo, but this isn’t a full daw more a modular groovebox kind of thing.

It has everything in one package though, samplers, synths, sequencing.

If you are looking for a more DAW like experience you can check out Cubasis 3, Beatmaker 3, Auria Pro and Audio Evolution mobile (and possibly more).

Synths, well where do we even start on that. There are so many, if you look for a typical modern synth check Synthmaster One, but there are endless options here.

  • Also FX: There are so many. One honest tip, try the stuff that you get with the DAW you choose first and then slowly expand.

The most popular effects devs currently are (in my opinion):
    Bleass
    IK Multimedia
    Bram Bros
    FAC
    Eventide
    Fab Filter
    Nembrini
    4Pockets

    In no particular order.

Drambo looks interesting but very complicated😅
    Cubasis 3 looks promising.
Saw a few Apps also available fir desktop like Synthmaster, Sugarbytes, Fabfilter but very pricey for ios apps.😬
Is it worth paying that amount of money for those apps in terms of quality?

  • Drambo. Aum. Apparillo. Ripplemaker. Radio unit. Gauss. Yale d. Skiiid. Morphit. Then see what effects Drambo might not give. You might buy a reverb, compressor or EQ.

Drambo + Drambo wave synth for £5 more

Aum in case you dont want to use Drambo as a host.

    Apparillo for an extra synth

    Radio unit for live radio

Gauss as a radio recorder and radio mangler

Skiiid for lo fi sounds through yale d which can be looperwithout needing to press a loop record button.

    Morphit for headphone correction.

    Ripplemaker for semi modular.

  • People would have bought apps they dont use. So getting recommendations + further recommendations based on what you bought is good. Not responsible though.

  • If you want a one stop shop for FX IK Multimedia MixBox

If it’s too “rich”, roll your own.

    Recommend FX:
    Bleass
    Eventide
    Bram Bros
    Toneboosters

    These will get you far.

Also one recommendation for a saturation plugin SATURN2 by FabFilters. Truly awesome

As others have said, Drambo is a killer drum machine and sampler. It's also a great AUv3 host, so you could use all your new AUv3 apps from within it. It excels at dnb. It's also got tons and tons of effects, and a massive library of quality user modules you can download for free on patchstorage.com .Check out this demo for a good example of what it can do (jungle):

Some more great apps for DNB would be RX950 by Inphonik, which emulates the converter in the old Akai S950 sampler - a dnb and jungle staple.
FAC Transient by FAC Fred Anton Corvest is a great transient shaper to give your percussion or bass more punch.
808Bass by Audiokit is an inexpensive, but very good bass synth. Like honestly, this thing sounds massive. It does one thing, but does that thing very, very well.
Toneboosters have a lot of high quality reverbs, eqs, tape sims, compressors etc. They are the next best thing to Fabfilter on IOS.
Sugarbytes have a lot of powerful (but deep) instruments. No doubt you could find something from them you'd find use for.
Also, if you need an environment to host all your apps in.. Garage Band is okay, not really very popular around here though.
Aum is a great mixer, and used almost universally by folks here. But it doesn't do linear arrangement very well.
    Good luck!

    Hi Nathi,

FL Studio has a bit of a unique workflow. The iPad is kinda more conducive to a different sort of workflow to me. Finding the way you like to use the iPad will determine what programs you want to use. Personally, I like AUM and what it lets me do.

Knowing what synths and effects you use on the PC might help others guide you here.

Go to youtube and search for free AUv3 apps. There are actually a bunch that can get you started. This will also help you find the channels on youtube that will be helpful. There are quite a few of these dedicated to iOS music.

If you can wait, most apps go on sale a few times a year. I bought most of my stuff 50% off during Black Friday and holiday sales.

Check out the channel by MobilMusicPro if you want to see what you can do with Cubasis 3. They also provide two free sample packs, for general use and pop (both already prepared to be imported into Cubasis 3). With that, you will have everything necessary to produce a song. But of course, people get more and more stuff :D

Also check what Doug did just with the internal instruments and effects of Cubasis 3:

    Welcome to the forum @Nathi94

Before you spend too much and potentially have some buyers remorse remember that EVERYTHING goes on sale (almost). If you are really looking to get the most value then watch the sales (will tag you in the sales thread) and watch demos of anything you are interested in from some of the YouTubers’ covering apps:

Apparillo is a good synth and the synths in drambo are good also. Just myself seen potential in drambo as host for auv3s. Locking parameters to synth knobs to the sequencer. So you arnt having to go mad with controllers.

Morphit is for headphone correction so its more better for music production.

  • My personal favorites for typical synth sounds are SynthMaster One and Poison-202. For ambient sounds, granular synths like Quanta, Tardigrain, and FRMS. My favorite effect app is Turnado (The Dictator knob can make anything crazy). I use Cubasis 3 as my DAW of choice, but recommend AUM as a host app for Audio Units when you just want to improvise / experiment . Definitely check out The Sound Test Room and Gavinski’s tutorials on YouTube if you want to see walkthroughs and demonstrations before you buy and as mentioned previously, it pays to wait for sales. If you need inspiration, it’s hard to beat Riffer for creating random sequences within a set scale. Welcome to IOS music making. It’s a very deep rabbit hole to get lost in, but it can be rewarding and fun.

Cubasis might be my choice but nearly 50 bucks 😬
Turnado looks like Chaos, i like it😂

I caught Cubasis on sale last year. I think I wound up paying 30 bucks instead of 50. Hopefully you’ll be able to catch a sale. Turnado absolutely brings the chaos, but can also be tamed for more typical multi effect usage. If you have some knowledge of LFO’s and envelope followers you can edit the effects to do all sorts of things.
    Have fun and enjoy. :)

Drambo is fantastic but has a learning curve.

In my opinion the key words are fast and fun.
There are a lot of fast and fun apps but i’ll highly recommend that you go apps that are AUv3

I’ll recommend that you try AUM. AUM is good for jamming and getting idears.
AUM is a mixer and it do not have a sequencer so for starters i’ll suggests that you buy some apps with a build in sequencer.

These apps that will get some sound and beats going quickly.

    Spacecraft
    https://apps.apple.com/dk/app/spacecraft-granular-synth/id1391256308?l=da

    DrumComputer by sugarbytes
    https://apps.apple.com/dk/app/drumcomputer-synthetic-beats/id1502238351?l=da

    Ruismaker noir
    https://apps.apple.com/dk/app/ruismaker-noir/id1441208874?l=da

    Gauss
    https://apps.apple.com/dk/app/gauss-field-looper/id1530684073?l=da

Pure acid (you might not be into acid but i’ll just HAVE to mention it 😂)
    https://apps.apple.com/dk/app/pure-acid/id1481283602?l=da

As effects i’ll agree that eventide is awesome and fun to use. AudioDamage is also very nice. There are 3 good ones in this bundle

    https://apps.apple.com/dk/app-bundle/audio-damage-studio-bundle/id1349427104?l=da

I’ll also recommend that you get some effects that will really mangle the sound from your instruments

    Perforator. (Super cool with Gauss)
    https://apps.apple.com/dk/app/perforator/id1382134258?l=da

    Koshiba

    Fac Alteza
    https://apps.apple.com/dk/app/fac-alteza/id1489369665?l=da

Last but very important. Make sure that you grap some of the FREE STUFF.
    For example:

Im not pure on Acid but the combination of drums and tb303 sounds good😂

    If you haven’t seen these.....

Proven favorite synth over the years is Animoog! And Spacecraft and Borderlands and Wavemapper and Ripplemaker and IVCS3 and TC-11. O, and Samplr! And I really want and will eventually get Zeeon! To me these are all unique and very top apps that I can think of at the moment.

I like working in AUM but usually do sequencing on my desktop (Bitwig) cause I find it a lot easier personally.

    Turnado is an amazing effect.

I also like these Amazing Noises apps a lot for fun experimentation, my favorites being:
Moebius Lab, Dedalus, Gliderverb and Dubfilter
And very similar to these are the apeSoft apps but I haven't used them as much though I think they are as worthy.

I want to spend more time with SynthScaper and SoundScaper one day.

  • Welcome @Nathi94. Cubasis2 is $24. Many prefer it to CB3. No further updates, but is fully functional and without some of the bugs in CB3. If you find you love Cubasis you can get the later version in a year when it will be even better... or next Black Friday.
