Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Download on the App Store

Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

He can try midi clock sync:
He would need a midi interface and an app that can send midi sync (most DAWs/hosts do).

Or he can try analog clocking:
For this he’ll need a multichannel (more than 1 stereo out) audio interface. Sending out a simple clock won’t require DC coupled interface.
Or simply sending out gate through iDevice audio socket, if he doesn’t need to be able to monitor iDevice and Volca together.
Many apps can be used to send analog gate
Korg SyncKontrol, miRack, Drambo or anything really that can generate audio with sharp transients.

Which Volca? The Modular doesn’t have Midi so would need a gate to sync it. In any case, you will need an audio / midi interface.

@mlau Catalina might be the highest OS the 2012 MBP can go..

    https://9to5mac.com/2020/11/12/macos-big-sur-compatibility/

    https://9to5mac.com/2019/06/03/macos-catalina-compatibility/

Go to Software Update (top left - menu bar - under the Apple) to find the latest available update(s)..
If that doesn't work try this link.. How to get old versions of macOS..
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211683

  • 2012 can only get to Catalina. Use the link above don’t bother with software update in preferences you might get a security patch rather than an upgrade. If you are using 32 bit apps and need them, don’t update past Mojave.

Get an audio interface for the Volca connecting to iPad.

  • @royor @DMan thank you guys ! much appreciated !

  • @royor @DMan as a matter of fact, if you have a macbook pro mid 2012 you have to check that the graphic card is metal compatible. otherwise, no mojave ...

  • is there a way to get logic pro for high sierra ?

  • SyncKontrol is very good if they happen to have an iphone/ipad with headphone jack spare.

You should still be able to download an older version of logic. 10.5 and 10.6 need newer OS than high Sierra but 10.4 works there.

I’m sad to learn that my 2012 MacBook Pro, which has been such a workhorse for me, can’t be updated anymore though. Not that I was looking to go to Big Sur anytime soon, In just upgraded it to Catalina about 5 weeks ago and it’s running well.

Download it on a version it is compatible with and then download it on High Sierra and it will say to download the last version compatible.
