So it happened - I’ve shattered my iPad Pro 11’s screen!!

edited November 2020 in Support and Feedback

After years of using iPads and being super careful with them I finally managed to smash the glass of the new to me 2018 pro 11. It fell on my drum kit’s hardware and because I just bought it, it had no screen protector on yet. It had a magnetic jtech case on but that didn’t help. The crack is not bad (it works fine) and I thought of maybe just slamming a gorilla glass on it ant try to use it that way but I’m feeling I might need to replace the digitiser glass instead.

The problem with replacing the digitiser is that it is glued to the lcd and it is tricky to separate them without an LCD separating machine. The screen assembly which I could fairly easily do myself is expensive (£300) and it costs almost as much as a second hand iPad.

I’ve considered selling the iPad and getting another one by adding another £200 but I was lucky to have bought this with just 7 battery cycles so I’d rather keep hold of it and replace the digitiser.

The cheapest digitiser replacement on eBay is currently £170 which is a bit of a blow for a silly yet expensive mistake, but I’d end up with a hopefully back to normal iPad soon after the repair.

Another way might be getting a cheap LCD separating machine (max £200 hopefully) and a £10 digitiser and do the job myself and keep the machine for future repairs.

I don’t know. Don’t feel like parting with cash at the moment but if I have to, I’d like to make the right decision.

What do you guys think? Any experiences with those machines? One thing I’m not clear about is how does the new digitiser glass get glued back to the screen? Any lived experiences?

Cheers

Yes, I do have one but this is second hand and knowing how insurance operates there’s likely a fat excess and penalty for making claims. Good point though I’ll check. I wonder whether the fact that it is second hand might be an issue? I have the eBay invoice/receipt though.

  • Back it up before doing anything with insurances. Some need to get the „broken“ device to verify that it is destroyed - you wont get it back, possibly. Even delete everything/reset device after the backup and remove all protections.

  • Just checked, I have contents cover but no accidental damage and excess of £100 so doesn’t seem to be the solution.

  • Sell as working but with a cracked screen. There a loads of them on eBay and get another one.
Make sure you back up and wipe it first.

  • Sorry to hear about this, fwiw I can imagine how you must feel.

This guy has some very useful info.
This is him repairing a iPad Pro run over by a car ....

    Good luck!

I’ve had several bad experiences with screen replacement and considering how much it costs I wouldn’t do it again. I recommend considering it a sign or whatever is needed to justify getting a new one.

Ha, but this is the new one! 😂
What were your bad experiences specifically?

I had iPad mini screen replaced for my kid by a 3rd party and it was never the same even after multiple repairs. Mini got its own mind after that and it would do it’s own taps, launching random apps and misbehave like a single tap resulting multiple taps around tapped area.

Just have it repaired by Apple.

I've done a fair few phones (mostly other people's) and an iPad 3 screen replacement. The biggest issue I've had is rubbish parts, it's taken me a long time to find somewhere I can get good quality spares when everyone's obsessed with selling me the cheapest (which I've found to result in some of the flakey behaviour described above).

I can recommend this UK seller, they offer you cheap, medium and quality options for screens - I've no experience of an iPad Pro, but this would be a good place to start:

Ok, cheers guys. Looks like I'll be selling this on Ebay and waiting for another one to sail by on Ebay. I have no reason to complain TBH as I have 2 x 10.5 pro's that have been lying around unused and the only reason I wanted to upgrade was extra power from usb-c connector.

Ok, breath out. I've got a plan now ;)

How long have you had it? In the past, if you called applecare, they would offer you the opportunity to buy the applecare+ and use one of the incidents.
Someone has told me this is no longer the case, but I’ve known 3 people to do this by being really nice to them. The worst they can say is no.

It is still under the regular warranty but that runs out in February 2021. I doubt this is going to work, seems like a very long shot and it wouldn’t make for a great business model if they let you apply extended accident warranty after the incident.

    Thanks for the links.
I’m still on the fence here. I wonder whether the cheap parts issue applies mainly to full screen assembly repairs as opposed to only getting the top glass delaminates and put back on again. I have no knowledge or experience on the matter though. If it was just the screen assembly replacement then I’d just buy that and do it myself. Separating the screen from the digitiser glass requires specialised equipment but the screen itself remains original and I expect just the top glass digitiser of a good quality will be easier to source and have less impact on performance than getting a shitty assembly.

@CapnWillie were your repairs of full screen assembly or just the glass?

In the past the screen and the top glass digitiser were separate and easy to replace, now they started to bond them. This happened with iMacs around 2012

Apple's 'repair' was to offer to sell me a new iPad when I took my 2015 iPad Pro 12.9 in because the touch screen had become unreliable so I wouldn't be too optimistic on that front

  • Problem solved! For now...

I just put on a decent gorilla glass on it and it seems ok. I was afraid there would be bubbles but so far pretty good. I just have to get used to working with a punk screen. Suits my personality anyway! ;)

  • Aw man! I feel your pain via a similar experience. Brand new phone, to the world, not just me. Delivered to work. Took the box with me on my way to lunch and just launched it from the box onto the pavement. Like a tiny ship, only there was no water to splash into. Shattered the screen into a few hundred thousand pieces. It still worked but it was like the touchscreen was made from muesli. I never got to touch it even once, when it was in one piece.

    2 year contract.

    Shit man. That sucks majorly.
Actually there was a collection only pro 11 this morning for £325 which I bought thinking I’d send a courier to pick it up but the seller refunded me straight away saying they wanted cash. So I offered them £20 extra to cover PayPal fees to which they agreed but soon after send me a message saying that these go for over £600 so thanks but no thanks. Sooo close.

Oooooh! That would have been awesome.

Museli phone has gone to the great tech pile in the sky, so I'm fine now.

  • Hi supadom, my sympathies. I’m in the same position, my 2018 pro 12.9 is cracked along one edge, its still operating but I was discouraged from repairing it because of the cost, and don’t have insurance. I was also thinking of trying a gorilla on it, as its starting to shed bits

Yes, it was a bit of a gamble but worked out alright. By no means a real solution but ok. It could have ended worse with bubbles everywhere and then bits of glass coming off with the screen protector but fortunately none of that happened. Jetech protector is only £7 on amazon so you could try it if the glass isn’t too shattered. Good luck.

Thanks, and yes the bubble issue made me hesitate, the other issue is how to clean the screen in preparation, without trapping any moisture or grease etc. Since it happened I’ve not used it (after almost constant daily use for over 2 years) sitting down with it tonight, I’m reminded anew what an incredible device the ipad is for music-making.

  • I’m gonna derail this thread and ask if anyone has had Apple do an iPad battery replacement for an out-of-warranty iPad (2017 iPad Pro 10.5” here)? It can still handle everything I have right now, and the internet says it costs $99 through Apple repair, so I may just do that and put off updating another couple years.

The price honestly seems a little too good to be true though, considering it’s Apple. Hell, if I’d known if it was available, I would’ve just battery-replaced my 5S and gone for 10 years instead of giving up at 6.

  • I know this doesn’t help OP but if you buy Apple care and something breaks, you can call tech support and they will send you a brand new iPad (not refurb) with postage to send yours back to them. You have 10 days to send back or you pay full price for the new one. I just did this a couple months ago, super impressed by the experience (and the new iPad/battery).

Mentioning it because all the online claims steps will not show this option anymore, they’ll route you to send your broken one to them or take to Apple store for repair. Who wants to wait around for that if you can get a new one? Worth the phone call - it’s part of the Apple care agreement (only reason I bought it).

  • The thing is @Obo is that not everyone can/want to spend money on a new iPad, let alone Apple Care which of course will have its benefits but you’re definitely paying for them.

I’ve had more than 10 iPads in my career and never had one smashed. They were all second hand, boxed with chargers etc. Some with very low battery cycle count. I’ve always paid around 60% of the original price and resold them for little less.
Yes, it’s definitely more comfortable and ‘clean’ but in terms of cost it’s another story.
I kind of got used to doing it this way and it became a bit of a ritual, not dissimilar to fishing and finding a bargain second iPad can be more enthralling experience than picking one in a shop..each to their own I suppose :)

Correct. iPad Pro 2018 and later and iPad Air 2020 (10.9") with flat design and thin bezels need Apple Care protection plan. These iPads are more breakable than any other models.

Apple is generous in some ways. They once replaced the battery in my out-of-warranty Mac for free as part of their Quality Service which would have cost me over $130. During the olden iPhone 4 death-grip situation, I walked into the store and told them I never received the free case - they instantly gave me a case (which would cost over $20) - no questions asked and no documentation. They perform many diagnostics and repairs at no charge. I always get a good feeling when I visit Apple Store as I walk out with a smile on my face with unexpected, pleasant and outstanding outcome. They even take returns beyond the deadline if we call them. Their support is fanatic.

  • @MobileMusic I can imagine experiences will vary. I had a battery replaced by the only Apple autorized dealer/repair shop in Oxford Uk. Other than being completely unprofessional their battery worked about 8 months before starting to last half a day despite showing 97% peak performance. This was the only time I’ve asked an external quantity to replace the battery. This is why two months ago I bought an extended battery at replacebase.co.Uk for £12 and I’m very happy with it (so far!) and battery replacement is super quick and easy and probably the hardest bit is to find a decent one.

So yeah, it all depends but I expect it might be better to do it at an actual Apple Store as opposed to an authorised dealer’s.

Totally understood and agreed. More of a PSA toward anyone who finds themselves with a smashed pad + Apple care. I fully understand a good bargain as well. I’ve had great luck buying my MacBooks second hand myself. I’ve always gone new on iPad but didn’t mean for it to come off as the only way - certainly not!
