This site is really cool.
The original team at Roland that created the TR-808 etc tell the history of it's creation in great detail. [ originally intended to be a drum synthesizer instead of a drum machine... but they had to keep the price down. And they had no idea how much low end the kick offered b/c their testing facilities speakers couldn't register such low freqs at the time. ] great gems of info here!
...ALSO the team recreated the 808 as the original drum synth and it's free to download for Mac and PC.
They were in uncharted territory. What they say makes absolute sense in the context of the time they were creating these instruments.
