Audio input via 3.5mm to Lightning adaptor
Trying to record some old cassettes into my iPhone SE (1st gen) via the Walkman’s headphone out into the phone’s Lightning port via the 3.5mm to Lightning dongle.
Is this possible? Or am I being stupid?
It’s not being recognised as an audio input by recording app I’ve tried but I presume the dongle can be used with the built-in mic that comes with a lot of wired earphones??

A 3.5mm plug that has a microphone has three sections. Two for audio output from the device, and one for microphone input to the device. The output from the walkman is coming on the two outputs, not on the microphone input, so it won't work like that.
You'd need a plug that combines the two outputs and then sends those down the right wire for the mic input. The result would be mono. I don't know if there are plugs like that available. An inexpensive audio interface would be better.
Also the line-out level is to high for the mic input, but cables for this do exist:

I don’t know how well they work. I use a roland go:mixer for a similar scenario.
Ok. Anyone know of any compact audio interfaces that have a 3.5mm stereo input??
Just looking for a less cumbersome method than my usual interface and splitting the stereo cable into 2 separate mono inputs.
and then its this fun... u need to chk that hassle for ipads 3.5mm input.. better option will be gomixer (post above)... imhave 50% ish luck on ebay china mic cable combos... not worth the job.
Yes, as mentioned I had a similar situation (PO33 into audioshare) and got a Go:mixer, the original one. It has two 3.5mms and more inputs for instruments. Also a 3.5mm out for monitoring. It is powered by the phone and basically pocket size.

That diagram above:
TRRS CTIA is pretty near universal now (it's the one that Apple rode roughshod over the industry with), the only OMTP ones you'll see are for very early Android, and I mean very early. You can more or less count it out as a thing now, it belongs in a museum.
Also, that diagram labels the first example as TS mono but it is clearly TRS stereo.

so it's not an outlandish thing to do, this device went in through that way too.
These are all USB class compliant, they all have stereo line inputs and can be used with the Camera Connection Kit 3 "CCK3".
The Zoom has by far the best audio recording quality from its stereo line input.

I saw that one too, but don't see anything about "Class Compliant" which is what will be needed to work with iOS. It may work and it may not.

I can’t find any MFI certification, and reviews seem hit or miss.

Well I’m delighted to report that this works. Plug and play, even comes with a female-female 3.5mm stereo adaptor.
Does it really only support .mp3 for captured file type?
No it captures the audio in whatever format your recording app chooses.
