One of the really key takeaways is that the lethality is clearly connected to how overloaded the hospital system is. The lethality is high when demand exceeds the health care system's ability to deliver needed care -- and that has happened in all the countries where active steps were not taken early to slow transmission rates.
The U.S. has fewer hospital beds per capita than many other countries which is why here, it is particularly important that people take action to slow transmission. The article graphs out how reducing social contact can drastically influence the lethality by keeping the epidemic more manageable.

I work from home, but that’s been disrupted because power cuts have damaged my equipment, and it’s been nigh on impossible to get replacements.
Bizarrely I have more work in, and coming in, than I’ve had in years. Fingers crossed for better luck tomorrow.
Weird. But I guess it gives me something to do, rather than shuffle about creating dark, dystopian ambient soundscapes.

If there’s any kind of positive I can take away from this horrible experience, it’s that I appreciate and love the life, family and friends I have more than ever.

We had already decided to keep our 11-year-old son from school starting today. We expect that the school will move to online classes soon but hasn't done that yet. I just read that our county (I'm in northern california) just declared a state of emergency -- and are closing the libraries. Good thing that we stocked up on books yesterday!

The true rate will only be reviewed in hindsight, that could be ......... insane.
The US isn't currently showing many cases at the moment but I feel its going to explode soon. When that happens I wonder how Trump will react if/when other countries ban flights from the US.
The reason there aren't many reported cases is nobody is being tested, Trump initially deliberately didn't want people tested /the numbers of tests released as he is obsessed with keeping the numbers down.
But the main reason is there's no test kits nor infrastructure due to Trump gutting funding over the past few years to line his mates pockets with tax rebates.
I live in Seattle, several miles from where the main outbreak in the US is. There is a nursing home where the majority of deaths in the entire US have occured. A week ago 70 out of 180 of the staff there were reporting virus symptoms, but the staff couldn't be tested because the home received just 45 testing kits for all their staff and residents. Many days later and they still hadn't received any more testing kits despite pleading for them.
If kits can't get delivered to here, the heart of the first major US outbreak, then how does that bode when scaled to the entire country.
I think the number of people infected in the US is significantly larger than the numbers, but due to deliberate Trump policy of concealment, and lack of testing kits, and no infrastructure even if there were kits, is the only reason the current numbers are so low.
What about the people who had the virus and recovered? Haven’t seen mentioned a single interview with folks like that. Seems odd. You’d think the people panicking might be consoled by stories of recovery, but there seem to be none and yet we know people have recovered. Very weird.
The reason the U.S. numbers are low is NOT because the epidemic isn't spreading -- it is because the U.S. doesn't currently have the ability to test everyone that needs to be tested.
Read this article to get a glimpse as to what the numbers probably are -- it is daunting. Always keep in mind that when an epidemic is spreading exponentially and your data is based on people that are already symptomatic enough to have sought testing/help, you are way behind the curve. But math can help get a picture as to what is happening.

These are not good numbers but it isn't too late for us to help keep it manageable. Areas where there are few cases should be proactively having people engage in social distancing to keep their hospital systems working reasonably.
@knewspeak I agree short term planning and thinking is a serious concern. Many of the points I raised suggest that and point 27 does so explicitly. Nevertheless emphasizing it more is a good idea too.
With respect to the virus, too many people cling to the idea that it’s not that bad and they can carry on as usual because it seems they’re too uncomfortable with the idea that to effectively slow down the virus they’ll have to make sacrifices both big and small or to reflect upon the idea that they or one of their loved ones may die from it, or that their jobs may be effected is something they’d rather continue to deny than to address.
I’ve already read a news story about how a research team wanted to develop a vaccine for Corona viruses four years ago but weren’t able to secure any funding to do so. Once again short term thinking drives decision making.
It’s too bad the NBA waited until one of its players tested positive for the virus before taking action. The more people decide to delay action to reduce the viral spread until it directly impacts them, the faster it will spread. The short term benefits of being selfish are a high cost to pay in these circumstances.

Bit of a contrast in cold, soon to be locked down Wales, with the latest storm (we’ve been getting one every other day) battering the windows, but at least the electric’s on now.

The economic panic is due in some part (impossible to determine how much) to the continued failure of leadership in the US. Stock futures plummeted minute by minute as Trump was speaking. His nervous, robotic, finger twiddling, emotionless, gasping, and inconsistent irrelevancies were a transparent attempt to deflect from the real failures of his administration which he leads by pulling on their penis and labial rings till it hurts.
Meanwhile, Medal of Freedom recipient and all round nice guy, Lush Rimbaugh continues calling it a hoax to bring down a god with crumbling clay feet. Anecdotal: liberal talk show host spoke to a doctor friend who said at least half his patients believe Coronavirus is a hoax. As long as right wing broadcasters are not subject to charges of criminal negligence they will continue to do the work of inflaming the mindless, consciousless, ignorant, unempathetic, xenophobic mass of idiots (with both high and low IQs and no EQ) that continue to support Kudos to guys like Tucker Carlson who at least have the balls to be able to separate their own ideological motives from a crisis that embraces all of humanity.

I remember watching Fox News Hannity and Combs, if I remember it correctly, it was when Barack Obama was first elected, several guests including a (UK) Conservative MP were describing the (UK) NHS as a NAZI inspired system, it was just utter warped mis-information.
I don’t know if this qualifies as me being mad at you, but I think it’s naive to assume shutting down Rush Limbaugh will change the behavior of his listeners. If anything it will reinforce their beliefs as such a move would be a desperate ploy on the part of the elites to perpetuate their virus hoax by shutting down those who are unmasking them. Extreme views develop over long periods of time and regaining trust is a very challenging prospect. People are extremely creative in their ability to sustain strongly held beliefs even when external events do not support them.
