  • Isn’t it a superb way to give the planet a health n hygiene lesson ? Frighten the shit clean out of everyone

  • If anyone complacently says it’s no worse than flu, like the CiC of the USA, tell them to look at the videos coming out of the Italian hospitals. That will be here, very soon.

  • It’s important to realise that this is not an Influenza A virus. Influenza A viruses are negative-sense single-strand RNA viruses. SARS-CoV-2 is a positive-sense single-strand RNA virus.

I'm genuinely scared. Both my parents are still around and over 80, my other half has heart problems, high cholestoral and Arthritis (the exact same 'underlying' health issues as one person who died earlier this week) and I myself suffer from shortness of breath and have signs of COPD according to my last visit to the doctor.

My 13 yo daughter could lose her parents and grandparents all very quickly if the worst were to happen to each of us.

I know there are others on here with health issues too. I am praying daily for all of us, and I'm not a religious person.

I have managed to keep these doom and gloom thoughts to myself up to now. I don't feel any better for getting it out either :(

Certainly feels like it here. Storms again - floods, hailstones, constant gale force winds. I've lived here on and off for 30 years and never experienced anything like it.

I know what you mean, things are still things, but increasingly getting more severe.

Talk about a total opposite right now.

Damn, that's a kicker. Is it physical social contact that makes you anxious ? Does online socialising count as getting out of the studio ?

  • No, human interaction is what is needed. When you spend so long on your own it then becomes hard work to be in public places. It’s obvious really.

I’m an expert at self isolation. Any other time would be a big problem.

    Isn’t it ironic ;-)

Pragmatic point of view: the true lethality rate of Covid-19 is completely unknown because the true total number of infections is completely unknown. It could be less deadly than the normal flu (650,000 deaths per year), or more deadly. Nobody knows.

Meanwhile, the economic effects of the measures that are being taken and the panic among the population have already created a serious recession and disrupted supply chains.

Yes, I know, who cares about the economy. But without a working economy, the direct or indirect death toll due to economic disruption might actually be higher than due to uncontained Covid-19 spread.

As long as the true lethality rate is not known, it's impossible to make a good decision.

Anyway, it's a terrible situation for anyone with a serious pre-existing condition or their relatives and I wish everyone the best for dealing with the crisis.

  • we’ll, at least the churches are shutting down. People can pray in peace.

  • i don’t really understand the sarcasm when people say that “the death rate is low, calm down its all lies” “ the flu kills way more people “... if 4000 people have died that’sa big deal imo thats a lot of people that had lives yesterday and now they don’t, regardless of how many people die from something else or how many people exist on the planet. idk its just frustrating, maybe because you don’t personally know those people you can brush it off but to discount it as meh it’s a small number really is sad 🤷🏻‍♂️ so that’s my frustration.
also i am on the “dont panic” team but maybe the economy isn’t as important as my fellow humans lives and we need to lock down a bit more and save those hospital beds.

  • Question: will any of MAGA folks recognize that the early happy-talk and failure to mobilize the health-care system is costing lives and causing disruption of the economy and people’s lives that far exceeds what would have happened if the U.S. government were run by people that believed i> @SevenSystems said:

While the lethality rate is not known, even the most optimistic projections are that it is quite a bit more lethal than the flu ... and that a vastly larger number of people will come down with it.

Actual lethality will be heavily impacted by whether citizens will act now in places that don't already have enforced social-distancing.

I agree, 100% but a worrisome thing about modern western culture is the massive level of obesity amongst the population, as to whether that could also increase the mortality rate.

indeed.. and in that respect i feel this virus will be a bit of a failure.

  • My frustration revolves around several factors:

    1. Us versus Them thinking
    2. Trying to avoid the consequences of our decisions.
    3. The need to be right being a powerful force for procrastination.
    4. I really hope the zombie movies turn out to be wrong but it’s unclear at this point.
    5. A significant proportion of people who do not understand science when so much of our lives revolves around its conclusions.
    6. There’s not sufficient thought going into how to develop or use the technology derived from science.
    7. Little attention is paid on all levels as to how sustainable our actions are.
    8. Things are pressed to the margins with the assumption that nothing will disrupt these plans despite ample historical evidence to the contrary.
    9. At least half the people in my country do not vote for their governmental representatives.
    10. Justice seems to be based upon how much money you have.
    11. People consistently band together to protect the bad behavior of their group members.
    12. Human life seems to be a low priority if it inconveniences you.
    13. People are quick to blame leaders yet do not put as much energy into trying to understand how they came to hold those positions or why their followers chose to follow them.
    14. Addiction of all forms seems to be on the rise and we seem incapable of developing effective steps to address it.
    15. Revenge and personal responsibility seem to drive a lot of decision making and are applied in uneven and thoughtless ways with unintended consequences.
    16. Empathy has gone out of fashion and limiting yourself to those who share your point of view is in.
    17. People believe they know more than experts despite their inability to rationally support their conclusions.
    18. Many companies facilitate unethical behavior and profit off providing public services by corrupting the process used to select such companies, cut corners to increase their profit margins, intimidate whistle blowers who try to bring their unethical practices to the attention of the public and their government.
    19. The various media and individuals who leverage drama to increase or retain their audience which seems to be eroding our trust in each other and distorting our perception of what’s happening around us and in the world while others have given up on learning about what’s going on because the experience is too depressing to subject themselves to.
    20. A dysfunctional medical system where many companies profit from being able to increase the cost of their products in our country without limits while other countries have placed limits on how much they can charge.
    21. Many full time workers in my country do not have health insurance.
    22. There are incentives for people to drive responsibly which are reflected in your insurance premiums. Everybody who drives has to have insurance or risk losing their driver’s license whereas there are no incentives for people to take better care of their health built into the healthcare system.
    23. Too many people believe the doctor is there to fix them and neglect their responsibility and ability to improve their health.
    24. Advertisers and government agencies have developed strategies which undermine healthy dietary practices.
    25. Significant medical care is wasted upon end of life patients who didn’t bother to create living wills or healthcare power of attorney’s to let their loved ones know what that wanted to have happen during end of life scenarios. Consequently guilty loved ones are afraid to pull the plug or have no authority to do so and exorbitant amounts of money go into medical care that doesn’t extend or improve their quality of life.
    26. Widespread indignation about welfare programs for individuals with relatively little attention paid to corporate welfare.
    27. Shareholders focused on quarterly profits drive corporate decision making which means we end up having to deal with the negative consequences of their short term thinking.
    28. In my country, running for public office requires huge sums of money. The public has been unwilling to fund these campaigns. Elections are largely funded by special interest groups. Their lobbyists then collect on their investment by being able to set the legislative agenda and write much of the legislative agenda.
    29. The exploitation of one issue voters. Politicians run on promises made to one issue voters which then gives them the flexibility to vote in favor of the special interests who funded their campaigns.
    30. The scape goating of immigrants during economic downturns. We don’t complain about them when their willingness to work for wages and in conditions we wouldn’t work in because we benefit from increased profits and lower prices at their expense.
    31. The manipulation of strongly held belief systems (e.g. capitalism, communism, religion, science, individualism . . .) to control the populous for the benefit of the elite.
    32. Leveraging fear to get the public to give their government more control over their life.
    33. A significant proportion of people in my country are so attached to their right that everyone should have any and as many guns as they want that it’s impossible to develop any sort of meaningful legislation on these issues.
    34. People so focused on guns being the cause of the problems that they’re unwilling to exam other issues that lead to gun violence and naively believe gun control alone will resolve the issue.
    35. Lack of public resolve to stop the sexual slave trade, child abuse, and domestic violence.
    36. People continue to participate in and patronize sports which cause significant brain damage such as football, boxing, and MMA despite wide spread coverage on these issues.
    37. At a time when we should be eliminating large public gatherings, professional sports leagues in my country continue to play before thousands of fans despite the actions of other countries with higher rates of infection and death.
  • In Italy we are are on lockdown. We are trying to limit the contagion. No positive test for me. I only hate people that not respect the rules. It is not beautiful to stay without work and without an income but it is necessary to solve this situation. In the first two weeks of virus spreading we thought we could live our lives normally but with this corona the only way is the quarantine to break the chain of contagion.

I agree, with what you say, but you overlook what I feel is the fatal flaw of our democratic systems, practically every decision is based on a short term planning. This is more pronounced at this time due to ‘austerity measures’.
