Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Download on the App Store

Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

Create stereo width with Lagrange (or anything I guess)

Lagrange is wonderful for creating rich pads but it could really do with a Reverb, or at least OSC pan setting, but couple of ways I’ve found useful (aside from using a Reverb):

  • Use TB Equaliser with the “ Widening Template” (mid-side) adds a nice width
  • Use a free app called Wide Touch
  • Apparently a delay can be used too with very small delay times

Comments

  • Try FAC Chorus. Lagrange is superb!

Ah I just bought that, and working out how to use it as a widener!

  • Yeah Fac is a fav ios chorus. Maybe try Quatromod by Audio Damage.

Also If you dont do so already utilize the lfo on amp panning within Lagrange. That combined with either effects above should get you there.

Thanks ... I’ll have a go with QuatroMod as well. I’m not finding the Lagrange amp panning so useful as it pans the entire mix but I think the FX mentioned here are giving me what I’m after.

We have a free app that works well for making mono sound like stereo:
    Stereo Lag
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/stereo-lag-time/id1459615373

And a non-free one that does it in a more complex and interesting way:
    Stereo Modulator
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/stereo-modulator/id1370816026

Another really wonderful one is Discord 4 with tiny positive and negative pitch adjustments for left and right channels, much like the sought-after Eventide pitch doubling from the better decades :D

Nice! Will give that a twirl as well. Thanks!

My absolute favorite for widening stuff is Wider from Infected Mushroom :)

They're both great and complement each other well.
Like Chorus effects - each one sounds different ;)

Especially as it’s free (or was).

It's still free, and my guess is that it will stay free as a 'promo product' :)
(But when their 'other' apps eventually drop they will likely not be free).

  • Thx for the reco 👍🏼 Sounds great, simple and effective....free too!

I tend to just use delay. Set L and R to different times and play with the feedback to get a nice effect.

Filter the delays to stop them muddying the mix

Very Short delays will have the effect of widening without obvious echoes. For pads and sustained sounds longer delays can sound wonderful. You can use the short delays panned hard L+R with a mostly wet sound to take the main sound out If the centre to make space for other sounds.

Mix in the amount of widening with the wet/dry control or better still if you’re using an app with busses use a send to adjust the amount.

I like K7D in iOS. It has lots of controls to add character to the delays.

  • I have two stereo-izing apps: Klevgrand Haaze and DDMF Directional EQ. I thought Haaze was decent, until I got the DDMF. It's like comparing a Yugo to a Maserati. Directional EQ doesn't do any hand-holding though. No presets. But twiddling knobs at random usually works pretty well for me.

@Samu I just got Wider..cheers for the info on this its very good. Would be even better if they added a mono volume dial so could mix in the mono volume with the stereo wide..i find this is never added to any desktop or iOS Stereo Widener plugins.I will email the dev to see if possible to add. It can also help with any phase issues.

Wider is 'Mono Safe' and the effect is fully cancelled when mixed down to mono and the level should stay the same.
(It doesn't use any delays to 'widen' the signal so phase issues are non-existent).

@Samu this is true . I more mean be good to blend in the mono signal with volume dial added

Oki, one way here would be to use it as a send effect?
(Do I get it right that you wet/dry control for the effect?).

Sending pre-fader to the plug-in would give you best of both worlds.
(FX return controls the 'wide' effect and channel level the 'dry' level).

I really love the 'one parameter simplicity' of Wider and I guess they will keep it that way.

@Samu yes i thought about the above you mentioned but it will not work as I want it due to my own template set up . Hard to explain. Aside from that I done a bit more with Wider and noticed it puts more increased volume on the left side of the stereoized signal ..i can’t use this.yes i could use a Pan to level it out but too much adjusting.
The Delay section in Zmoors Eq is more accurate for me.
