Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

Lately, I have been considering buying Drumagog 5 inside Auria, so I checked old threads on the forum and I found this post from @richardyot about recording fingerdrumming on a table and then use Drumagog for drums hit replacement. You might want to check this out. I wonder if Richard is still using this technique for his drums and if he still recommends Drumagog...

EDIT: sorry, I just noticed you want this for iPhone, but I believe Auria is still iPad only, my mistake. Anyway Richard's post is really interesting, it is worth reading!

These days I mostly perform/sequence drums inside NS2, it's the best workflow I've found so far: the pads respond to velocity on the Y axis (which for me works much better than trying to achieve touch/pressure sensitivity on the glass screen), and the combination of custom Slate kits and the excellent NS2 sequencer work really well.

There are still things I really like about Auria and Drumagog for this though, namely that Drumagog has the most realistic ride cymbals I've heard on iOS (with round robins etc) and that some of the Lyra drumkits are really excellent (again with sampled velocities and round-robins). I use the Xequence pads to record the performances into Auria, in order to get the y-axis velocity.

    Velocity Keyboard

This midi controller app - with a configurable X x Y drumpad layout is simply fantastic. The velocity sensing algorithm works very well, at least for my playing style. And you can fine tune the velocity curve etc. to your liking. I am using it mainly on the iPad with BM3 (pads mapped to focus actions), but I would imagine it works just as well on the iphone to send midi to other apps.

dry cool i did t know that. thanks

There are a lot of great apps above. But, if you're talking about classic 16-pad finger drumming (a la Mad Zach), none of them will do. For example, I use my MidiFighter or QuNeo to drum with a 4x4 grid on Groove Rider.

I have some recommendations for apps that will get you what you want, with different pros and cons:

    iMaschine 2
    https://itunes.apple.com/app/imaschine-2/id989330818

16 pads right in the center of the phone. Easy to load samples. Decent starter kit plus IAPs. Plus, import your own sounds.

iMPC Pro 2 for iPhone (or the old cheap version of iMPC)
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/impc-pro-2-for-iphone/id1413887036

May be overkill for what you want, but the most authentic MPC experience on iPhone.

    BeatHawk
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/id839563064

Love the sounds in this app, but many of them go beyond classic finger drumming samples.

MidiStudio (there's also a pro version)
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/midi-studio/id519720275

Had a DrumPad you can configure.

    ChordPolyPad
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/chordpolypad/id694599930

If you don't have this for triggering chords, you should. It's fun to finger drum chords. But, you can also create 1-note "chords" on each pad to correspond to a drum note to trigger a kit in another drum app, sample app or soundfont player. Also, it has a full screen mode, but the pads become rectangular.

    Good luck.

i ended up getting impc pro 2 for iphone and it’s been pretty sweet so far. thanks

  • Btw, I’m experimenting with Xequence Pads AU and AudioLayer so I can get my round robin sounds. ; )

Highly recommend akai mpd 218 & a 3rd party cck (the simple non power one)

That’s what I use to practice my finger drumming when on the bus with an iPhone.

This is good as well: https://questforgroove.com/

  • @eross DrumSession has a good pad layout for iPhone. I just reinstalled and then remembered this post from you.

  • agh very cool thanks > @MeatWalrus said:

Quest for Groove is amazing, but I still feel like he is forcing real-world instrument layouts on a finger-based approach.

    I like MacZach's layout:

  • Tonight I finally figured out how to use round robin in AudioLayer to load midifighter kits. The idea is to add some variety with rotating samples.

TL;DR Complete a full layer, and then duplicate it for every instance of a changed sample. Then go through the layers and selectively edit the samples you want to rotate through.
