Audiobus: Use your music apps together.
What is Audiobus? — Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.Download on the App Store
Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.
He means that even when used in an audio effect slot that you should route midi note data to the AU not just send it audio data.
ApeFilter is another audio fx AU that also changes based on midi notes sent to it.
Yeah, you need to route midi directly to the aufx, not just the instrument in that channel.
Ok ok. I will try that. I didn’t even know that you could send notes to the aufx. 🙄
There are a few cool apps which benefit from midi on fx. Spacecraft granular is one, when live recording from the ipad mic, you can play the incoming audio in real time.
Use the routing matrix to do it.
Can anyone confirm??
Has there been discussion of the possibility of adding a simple way to record loops of the XY pad motion?
To me putting the xy pad front and center is a great way to drive the message that these dsp engines crave modulation. And it makes great use of the fact that this is an implementation of the engines meant for touch screen. I like it!
IMO, adding the option to record and loop the motions (perhaps even retrigger on new notes) would take this awesome part of Spectrum’s UI to the next level. (One use case that seems particularly valuable to me is having a very intuitive way to get powerful and customizable modulation running while tweaking a patch.)
Pretty sure it's a bug, still have to fix it before next release. Sorry!
Could we get LPG Colour as a modulation destination in the next release?
Also, how about extending the 8-voice polyphony to Resonator and Modal? It's interesting that Resonator doesn't come with the 1/2/4 "polyphony" setting from Rings.
Don't know if it's me or the app or the polyphony settings or something else but in 'Spectrum' sometimes the L&R source knobs just stop working (they move but do not affect the output) so it's not possible to switch between the Main and the Aux regardless of hot those 'mix knobs' are set.
The polyphony issues has been mentioned before ie. sometimes notes simply don't play.
I've yet to nail down when this actually happens but it feels like 'when you least expect it' kinda thing...
I haven't noticed that main/aux bug, but I'm getting the polyphony issue where certain notes don't play quite often in AUM and NS2. I have no idea what causes it, but there does always seem to be a pattern, like the 3rd and 7th voices don't play, and it's different every time.
I am getting a polyphony issue in auria where spektrum is just making a loud noise untill I turn the polyphony down to 4 or less.
Thanks @burns_audio for some great instruments!
If may add something to the wish list: would it possible for the various parameter knobs to show the current values as they are modulated by the xy pad or the various other modulation sources? For me, it w old make it more obvious, what is happening with the sound.
Not next release but I added it to my bug tracker.
It's not that interesting, I just ran out of time. I really wanted to launch this in June as I knew my summer would be busy. Rings is hard-coded to 4 "polyphony" but the note interface is still the eurorack interface, where a new trigger will begin playing a second note while the previous note still decays. So you can't hold one note and play a second note, you need to play staccato.
Also there's some interesting code hidden in Elements - it is built for polyphony but on hardware you have to reduce the resonator bands if you increase polyphony past one. Some day I might play with that and see if I can get it running polyphonic.
Spectrum's polyphony on the audio side is very naive - it just mixes the voices from 8 instances of plaits together. This would sound terrible for Elements and some Rings modes, because each voice has its own reverb. So I can't just copy my approach for spectrum onto Elements and Rings.
Question, do you know if it was like that from the moment you added the synth, or did some voices stop playing after awhile?
There's an array of 8 voices that get allocated depending on notes played / also assigned round-robin, so it seems that somehow the the sound engine can end up "frozen". I don't have a way to reproduce it so I usually don't end up with this problem in a debugging session.
That's a great idea! Then the touchpad would really be fully inspired by the intellijel planar 2 (one of my favourite modules). Added to my bug tracker.
Could you post a video? I don't have auria currently. What device are you using, perhaps you are maxing your CPU?
I think certain voices stop playing after tweaking some settings, or loading a new preset in AUM, but I'm not sure to be honest. It seems to happen randomly, sometimes switching algorithm brings back all the voices and sometimes I need to reload the plugin.
It just happened again in AUM, at some point after switching algorithm and turning unison off. Recorded a quick screengrab which shows certain notes sounding muted.
Thanks again for these great plugins, probably my favourite synths on iOS. Hope you're having a nice summer and look forward to the next update!
Thanks very much for the thoughtful response. That Elements code sounds promising!
Just released 0.4! It should be available over the next 24 hours.
YYAAYY!! thank you!!
Love the update, especially the improvements to the LFO
One minor LFO related request remains...
While it is possible to apply positive and negative amounts of LFO to a destination the LFO’s output is still bi-polar making detailed modulation tricky. For example if I want to apply negative LFO to a value that is already 1.000 half of the LFO’s cycle will keep the value maxed and since there’s no value indication of the LFO depth it makes it tricky to set both values accurately.
This is ‘geekery’ at a higher level but a uni/bi-polar switch and value indication for LFO depth would make it just about perfect!
And well, more LFO’s and Envelopes are always welcome...
Thanks for the update @burns_audio 5-stars to the AppStore from Sweden
Thanks for your great work.
@burns_audio Thank you! Your apps are fantastic - practical and creative new features with this update!
So excited about this update. 🙌
Went nuts with midi cc modulation last night. #lfoeverything
@burns_audio Thanks for the update, love the new lfo features and really nice to have the other Clouds modes working.
Do you plan on bringing these to macOS at some point? Would really love to use these in Ableton and Maschine!
Wow, these keep getting better.
Great update @burns_audio
Solid and snappy updates coming in 🔥. Great work @burns_audio
Finally messed with the granular with FM player. Then threw on the Eventide effects. I’m in ambient heaven.
Well, knock me down and step on my face ... this is amazing! What a tremendous gift. Jeez Louise @burns_audio are you kidding me!? Free?!
Ok then, sorry, but I’m just so thrilled to have finally discovered this. Wow, so thankful.
Excellent that Granular is fully working. Spectrum + Granular has been my goto starting point for messing around ever since they came out, and that will continue tonight.
