Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Download on the App Store

Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

Cheapest way to midi up an ipad? (no wi-fi)

I'm looking to add a midi out to my ipad to use delora rstouch with reason 9 (windows.)

I don't have wifi at home because I find internet addictive... Don't want to spent all my time on it.

So basically I'm looking for a cheap ipad compatible midi interface, new or used.

This product is cheap but want to spend as little as possible https://www.guitarcenter.com/iConnectivity/iConnectMIDI1-Lightning-Edition.gc

  • Also, do all "usb class compliant" devices work?

Yes. If you want to charge the iPad at the same time, you either use a pair of Bluetooth MIDI dongles like the Quicco mi.1 or Yamaha MD-BT01, or you purchase Apple's USB3 Camera Connection Kit in addidion to the class-compliant MIDI interface.
In both cases you can keep the factory charger cable connected.

Have a look at midimittr for USB.

  • I’ve had good luck with MidiMux and StudioMux. MidiMux is free, and is midi only. StudioMux isn’t free, but adds audio. It does require installing iTunes on the PC (yuck). But only requires a Lightning USB cable to work.

I’ve read several accounts of people struggling with StudioMux. I haven’t had issues. YMMV.

Yes, Class Compliant devices should all work with iOS.

  • @wim Couple of slight corrections. MidiMux is $1.99 and the StudioMux server can be used without installing iTunes on Windows. Instruction can be found on the StudioMux homepage.

But if the OP were to go down the StudioMux route, and I reckon that's the way to go, I'd say purchase ModStep for the same price as StudioMux $9.99 as it works with the StudioMux server too and provides an excellent clip launching MIDI host as part of the asking price.

The installation instructions for StudioMux are far better these days and that includes the instructions for an iTunes free install.

Setup guides at the base of this page.

Thanks for the corrections @jonmoore. I got MidiMux for free a long time ago. StudioMux is worth the purchase IMO. Good to know about not needing iTunes. I hate that software with an unreasonable passion. If I ever do need it for something I uninstall it again right after.

You and me both. I regret ever purchasing music & movies/tv etc via iTunes. I have it on my OS X devices as it's somehow less abhorrent there. But I never use it, as most of the content I did at one-time purchase I have access to via streaming services or I repurchased it in better formats.

It's the very definition of bloatware with horrendous DRM. It also has a rather nasty habit of removing content that it no longer has a license to sell, even though you purchased it yourself at some point.

The only good thing about iTunes is that I'm now so enraged even thinking about it, I'm off down the pub for a nice bottle of red. :)

  • You don’t actually need the internet to have WiFi

Something like a Hootoo would provide a local WiFi network.

Not very reliable timing wise though. At least not for me.

  • I have studiomux, it works well for me, and midimux was free when I got it along time ago. Didn't realize modstep had it built in. Hear such praise for modstep, sounds like a deal to me
