Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

  • Here's another one with with my SY85 as the source :)
(It's the 1st preset I made when AudioLayer was initially launched).

Cheers @Samu sounds good, their sharing system works thanks to Dropbox.

  • I'll start with a small instrument with few samples. I'm also curious to understand if I'm sharing the whole folder where all my exports could be housed:

    https://www.dropbox.com/sh/0icsg7vdj9qnt86/AACl4MvgB0a2VLKBSLej3J0Da?dl=0

This instrument is an "English Horn" which is the longer version of the double reeded Oboe and not what you might think of as a Horn. It's also called a "Cor Anglais" and it can convey ”feelings of absence, abandonment, painful isolation”. Be forewarned.

What I like about this one is the use of the Mod settings to make the player more human with slight variations in the tone and not so synthy.

Please let me know if it imports easily and I'll drop another instrument in the same DropBox folder as a test to see how many links I need to share. How much does the 1TB DropBox cost?

  • $10/month for 1TB for DropBox Premium.

  • Is it possible to import into AudioLayer from SFZ or SF2 files?

    @McDtracy Imports over fine thankyou.

Nice SY85 Pad with a perfectly clean loop... which I would expect given the OCD and looping expertise.

I have put all 3 Instruments donated thus far into my dropbox and I'll move some more there:

  • here is a Korg minipops drum machine..
it’s one of the many free exs24 instruments on logic-cafe.com .. see the original Audiolayer thread for the shenanigans involved in importing exs24 instruments if you (frugally) use local storage rather than icloud drive.. the only workaround is temporarily use icloud drive to import the instrument then re-export the exs as audiolayer preset, switch back to local storage and reimport from dropbox or docs or wherever..
...so it’s not quite there yet imvho @Virsyn :)

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/1dndha1qrlg6q0p/Korg Minipops EXS.audiolayer.zip

also no one had put up a multi sampled instrument yet so i just wanted to test if people could get this one and it functioned ok..

a roland cr-78 , just as a by-product of trying to fathom exs24 import , again from the logic-cafe.com site..
because? well... who doesn’t love a CR-78? and it might save one or none of you some messing with the exs import thing? see main AL thread to discover its all quite simple..... once you know how!!? :)

  • I loaded the SoundFonts4U Yamaha C5 into an AudioLayer Instrument. It's available at:

    https://dropbox.com/sh/0icsg7vdj9qnt86/AACl4MvgB0a2VLKBSLej3J0Da?dl=0

It's about 1/2 GB in size and may not load on an IOS Platform with less than the 2GB of RAM I have on my 2018 9.7" iPad.

On my iPad it sounds like this:

    https://soundcloud.com/user-403688328/audiolayer-grieg-concerto-on

Let me know if it loads for you or not. There are a ton of samples that could be removed for smaller devices. It just takes a lot of time to throw them out and re-adjust the layers/zones of the remaining samples for complete coverage of the keyboard and all velocities.

  • OK here is my first offering. Taken from one of my own presets in Waldorf Nave. There are three velocity levels to play with - you might want to roll off some of the top end if it’s too much for your taste.

    https://www.dropbox.com/sh/yapqwhm2ylgwod4/AAA9OMWDcGfGfkgL2cFnxqWba?dl=0

Ill put some more in later.

let me know if I have got the sharing right and you can grab the file.

    Cheers
  • @ageezz Thanks works great.

Tried to load this instrument ( on Air 2). Audiolayer complaints that it is ”wrong format” though. Anybody else succesfully loaded it up in AL?

  • edited August 2018

Discovered that the problem above (wrong format) suddenly happened with every import I tried. Reinstalled AL and it worked... @VirSyn , any idea what happened ?

Maybe you didn't have the updated version and the reinstall gave you the freshest code? Just a guess.

I suspect the @Virsyn folks are locked up writing the manual and are not allowed to read the Forum. A user can hope.

  • Does anyone know how to effectively use the Mod Wheel option on a layer? I was hoping it would morph between 2 samples but it appears to only apply Envelope changes... Any clues appreciated while we wait for the user manual. I suspect the VirSyn folks are heads down writing on a deadline.

@VirSyn: Thank you for this powerful and useful update to the App. EXS24 is a great decision. SF2's tend to be collections of 12-128 instruments intended for "General Midi/GS/XG" use cases and ESX24 pulls out an instrument which is a good match.

Now I need to learn how to automate the creation of EXS24's from my Apps. I think that's doable using a Mac Desktop and IDAM to connect my iPad as a sound module. But (as always) any clues appreciated.

  • Just make two layers, one with "mod wheel up" and one with "mod wheel down", then you can blend/morph between the samples in both layers.

    Thanks!

I was hoping it worked that way. I tried it but didn't get that behavior. I'll try again and see where I missed something to make it work as a blend/morph control.

My controller wasn't sending the CC messages out to the iPad.
I mapped a knob to the CC for Modulation and I can hear the morphing between a trombone and a piano as I turn the knob.

  • FYI: There's a new thread with a video showing how to import the EXS24 files into AudioLayer. Haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

  • edited September 2018

I sampled a vintage Jaymar toy piano. This is probably most useful for horror music. The timbre is bad enough but it couldn't really be tuned perfectly. Some of the bars were so rusty that it would change pitch after the initial transient.

  • Does anyone have legal guidance about re-using Samples in these handcrafted AudioLayer instruments?

It's easy to find sound but not find the "rights" associated with it. If the only legal restriction is "credit" how should that be addressed?

With a readme.txt file added in the Zip file?

  • Stupid question: how do you get a zipped exs from AudioShare to AudioLayer?

Should mention that I have tried the share options from AudioShare and AudioLayer displays a message that it was not able to open the file/zip due to a format error.

Mr. AudioDabbler has posted a thread about this with a youtube video. I didn't watch the vid yet, but I think this will get you there:

    https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/28157/audiolayer-exs-import-attached-poll

Also, if the EXS is .zip you might need another file management app that can unzip folders. I use "FileBrowser"

Thanks for pointing me to that thread. For those running into problems importing when not using the Cloud storage option:

    • Put the EXS file and its samples in a folder at the root level of the AudioLayer folder that appears On My iPad in Files BUT see the next item
    • The AudioLayer folder might not be exposed if you haven't already moved something into it with iTunes File Sharing. There is a workaround: 1) enable cloud sharing, 2) in Files visit the AudioLayer folder on the iCloud Drive, 3) copy a folder (it can be empty) that is in the the AudioLayer cloud drive folder, 4) navigate to On My Ipad where you should now see and AudioLayer folder, 5) paste the folder you copied

You can now turn off the cloud storage preference in AudioLayer and the AudioLayer folder will show up in Files. Just move folders with your EXS file and its samples into that folder. Then, in files, tap on an EXS file that you moved and tap Share in the options popup. Then select Open in AudioLayer. AudioLayer will then import the instrument.
