Looking for a sequencer that will advance "steps" when it receives a configurable midi note...

I need a step sequencer that will allow me to:

  1. Enter a sequencer of notes
  2. Define a midi note that will advance the play step
  3. Loop when it reaches the end
  4. Essentially I need a sequencer like the SH101 on the iPad

MidiSteps is the closest... But the way he built it, you can't set/define the midi note that advances a sequence, and you can't define a separate note for each of the 4 sequences.

If MIDISteps could do those things it would be PERFECT. I'd throw money at Art if he would update to allow configuring the triggering midi note/ch per sequence.

Does anyone know of another sequencer that can do this? I've got pretty much every sequencer I think but have not discovered this ability.

I think I could build something in zMors, but I'd prefer a standalone AU.

Help?

  • There's another somewhat recent stand alone app that I can't recall but this Lemur template made by @rad3d might cover you. https://liine.net/en/community/user-library/view/638/

The newer one was less a traditional sequencer and more like one of the chord library apps. In case that helps you find it. :)

Yea, I know apps like ChordPolyPad, Suggester, NaviChord allow you to bind midi notes to chords, but I'm looking notes, not chords. Yea, I know that the chords can just be one note, and NaviChord has a binding for "next" but it's not really the workflow I need, plus it's not AU so only one voice.

That Lemus layout looks interesting. I've really dug MididesignerPro, but I can not figure out where to even start with Lemur. They were more worried about seeming "artsy" than "usable" if you ask me...

Take a look at the Dreamfoot app first.

As @Syrupcore mentioned, I made a Lemur template a while back and it would support either chords or single notes to be stepped through. It has some features that go beyond Dreamfoot, but Dreamfoot is much more straightforward and might be what you need.

  • Dreamfoot? is it Ipad only? never heard of that one

  • Dreamfoot looks basically identical to something like ChordPolyPad, but with less features.

Again, I'm not looking for a chord sequencer/stepper... I've got like 5 of those. I'm looking for a step sequencer for melody/arp/bass lines... Each with it's own trigger/advance midi note.

If anyone is familiar with the VST from Piz called Midistep.. https://www.thepiz.org/plugins/?p=midiStep

That's what I'm looking for on an iPad.

Why is it so, that so few people post a link to an App in the App Store?
It's just an Share to the iMessage App and then copy-and-paste ;)

How many separate tracks do you need? How many steps?

Yes, I have it, but I don't see a way to advance a sequence via a midi note in... Is there a way?

Midi Generator could be quite close to the feature requested, using the morph screen and/or the +/- step option on the keyboard screen.
Thanks for mentioning @BiancaNeve , that looks about one of the clearest designs for such an app ever :+1:

@Drümünkey a sequencer plays an array of notes in cycles. What you want is a modulator of the increment (normally 1) based on the incoming note.
Possible values are from 2 upto the number of steps remaining to the end of the sequence (in forward stepping mode). For reverse stepping calculation is accordingly.

The additional action for the app is to check the incoming note for this 'switching attribute'. It's not very complicated, but can only be implemented by the developer.
Could be useful in particular if a certain keyboard range is used to directly enter the offset.
For example the white keys of an octave switch forward like C 2 steps, D 3 steps and the black keys work in reverse.
In that case one might ignore the above range calculation and just let it 'overstep'.
(there's probably a 'reset steps' feature in most sequencers anyway)

It only does this with recording - not as a substitute for playing - i.e. a clock/step advance. However its a useful option, so will add it for the next update. AUM uses this method to stop/start transport so it does seem in use - will add that too.

  • Thesys can. I actually have a video showing it.

Awesome!! I will buy it if it has these features.

working on it now. Adding a new option to Master/Slave called NoteIn.
I'm going to add the ability to trigger from any note or a specific midi note number. It will trigger on the midi note on message only (so ignore 0 velocity note on, or a midi note off message).

Wild, that's some pretty good service! I've had Quantum for a while but haven't found a perfect use for it. This could help me re-kindle some love! :)

My suggestion, if you do add it, is to allow a user definable midi note or CC (i.e. CC val=127) as the step trigger, and have the ability to have a different trigger per "part" if someone wants to split it up.

So you could have like 4 parts, each triggered by a different rhythmic input. For example, set up @brambos 's Rhythm to only spit out the triggering midi note for each part, have 4 instances of Rhythm, one for each part. Then have the 8 pattern slots in each instance triggered by particles.

Thus, you'll have some musical coherence in the note order, but the rhythms constantly changing will provide for an insane amount of variety.

Who, I've had Thesys for a while but every time I use it I remember why I stopped. That UI on ipad is PAINFUL.

  • Just wanted to through this out there, but SunVox will do exactly what you want. Now, it's not a "piano roll" type of sequencer, it's a tracker, and that may not be your ball of wax. But it will most certainly do what you're looking for (step sequencing) and I find it gives me extreme control over my all MIDI sequences including the "live" performance MIDI capturing as well as step sequencing. In fact, even though I do all recording, synth hosting, mixing, etc, in Auria, I use SunVox for all my MIDI sequencing now.

This is very cool. I tried to figure this setup out a few months ago, but gave up after not being able to get it going. Now there is a straightforward way to do it coming, and that sounds great to me. :)

I have thought about that very often, but it looks so f'ing complex...

In a similar vein, I do think I can get something like this to work in zMors... I think if I'm going to tuck my head in and do the modular thing I'd start there since I already have the damn thing sitting there just doing random bloops and bleeps. :)

Just completed the Quantum mod to use midi in(eg a keyboard or another sequencer) to drive the sequence.

    This one's for @Drümünkey

Its also kickstarted me into doing more vids

    This is brilliant.

  • When Thesys gets the AUv3 update, it’s going to be a good day. :)
And also when Quantum gets it’s update released, another good day.
