Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Gated reverb?

Getting lost among the reverb apps I have, and what might still be available that I’ve not seen. So many concentrate on replicating spaces, etc.

Is there an app, preferably AU, that offers a straightforward gated reverb as a preset?

  • Maybe there's a specialised app, but to really get the effect you need a reverb, a gate, and a side-chain to feed the drums (or whatever audio you're affecting) into the gate.

It can easily be done in Auria with Pro-G and any reverb plugin, but for AU I'm not sure if side-chaining is an option.

  • Doug has made a video for Cubasis, doesn't use a side-chain but still looks feasible:

  • are there any gate apps?

Thanks, richardyot. Will have a dabble. :)

BTW, Pro-G is the one FF that I don’t have, and at almost £29 it’s too much for an experiment. Maybe in the next sale.

  • It’s IAA not AU but ElasticFX has gate and gated reverb. I just tested with a snare and it sounded decent. It takes some messing around to dial in the right sound. The various FX routing configurations make a big difference. I’d confirm with others if this will do exactly what you’re after before you run out and buy it.

Ah, good, I already have that one. :) Half the problem, these days, is having so many apps only partially explored. So thanks for pointing this out.

  • Cool.. yep, glad I could help. Hope it works out!

  • I found a gated reverb on one of the apps I own just last week. Now I can't remember which one. If it comes to mind I'll post it here.

  • In Korg Gadget the Recife drum gadget has a ‘gate reverb’ effect you can apply. I realize this cant be used by other gadgets, but thought id throw it in.

  • Could you use FAC Transient to gate the reverb?

  • AltiSpace. IAA and AudioBus.
You can even finely control the "gating" envelope.

Only if I had it. Was about to pull trigger, when something else caught my attention. You know how it goes at Appaholics Unanimous. :)

Good idea, will give that a go, too.

  • I have used Brusfri after the verb to gate the transient. Its not exactly what it was designed for but works for me.
What are you going with gated reverb?

Wow, that is pretty crazy, in the coolest way. Do you use the reverb tail as the noise sample to set it up?

  • @CracklePot That was my initial strategy but Brusfri is inteligent, it works it out so you just hold down the ear for the whole sound and then adjust the envelope.
There must be hundreds of ways to do gated reverb! Great thread!

Damn, thank you for this genius tip/technique/hack. I love tricks such as this. :) B)

  • I've been looking for an AUv3 Gate for awhile now but nothing quite does what I'm looking for. I'll have to try some of the suggestions here...

Some verb + pumphouse on a send channel should do the trick pretty nicely

  • DDMF NYCompressor supports side chaining, but no hosts have multi-bus AUv3 support yet. See discussion here:

Still can’t believe there’s no AUv3 sidechain option yet. Also there’s no simple AUv3 gate. Doh.

Maybe the Brambos AU3 Gate will appear as part of Rozetta, or a stand-alone app.

  • So what did you end up using? Or still looking/waiting for the right app?

Elastic Fx is looking like the favourite. But not doing much at the moment due to eye problem. Hopefully fixed up in due course. The track, and me. ;)

BTW, we are very pleased to be getting a good response to our foray into Bollywood ‘Subash Saves the Day’ which has now been passed on to a guy who does movie scores. Probably come to nothing. But nice to be heard.

  • Man, sorry to hear your are having eye troubles. Hope all is well.
Great to hear that you guys are getting some good attention on your Bollywood Track! Good luck landing some soundtrack work. That would be pretty cool. B)

  • Just mess around with the pre delay. Most reverbs have this. I’m mainly using EOS2 but im getting some nice results with cubasis’ stock reverb too.

You could also just make a set of drum samples that have the gated reverb baked in.
Just record your drum hits in a sequence with whatever reverb you want.
Then take that as an audio file into something like Samplist and slice it up.
You can cut the reverb tail off, but still use Samplist’s per slice envelope feature to tune the gating slope.
Then you could load the samples up in something like Patterning, BeatHawk, BM3, etc. and play the gated drum samples like a regular kit, without having to worry about setting up the actual reverb FX anymore.
