Watched the first two episodes of Shogun on Hulu and was impressed. I remember watching the early 80s version and not being too impressed, but this is much better and retains the flavor of the book.

Oh cool! I might have to add this to the list.

Did you ever watch the Blind Swordsman? I used to love it as a kid. We’re a Japanese family so I watched lots of that growing up.

I’m actually going to ask my wife’s cousin’s wife if she has seen it - she is Japanese, so I’d like to get her opinion. What does come over to me is that the Japanese characters and customs are far less stereotypical than in the 80s show.

I haven’t seen The Blind Swordsman, but I will check it out.

Cool! Lemme know what she thinks. I was born here (my grandparents immigrated) so I know less about it than some do surely but always cool to see what people think.

Blind Swordsman is good but old. I know some people don’t like older movies and shows but I always loved it

She was born in Japan and lived more than half her life there, so her perspective would be good to hear (assuming she watched it).

On a side note, I’m going to be traveling to Japan later this year (martial arts-related trip), and I’m really looking forward to it, particularly as one of us has friends in Tokyo who offered to be guides in the city.

Wow you saying martial arts trip is what finally made me realize you’re wearing a Gi in your profile picture 😂 never noticed before. Judo?

That’s awesome! I still have some family there (but in Osaka). Enjoy the trip! I’m hoping I get to go next year.

I had one of the best nights of my life at an underground reggae rave in Osaka. Fine town :)

I’ve still never been but from what I’ve seen and what I’ve heard from friends and family, it seems great :) I’m determined to go asap! 🇯🇵

Some Judo, but mostly mixed martial arts (not to be confused with MMA), and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Occasionally some boxing too..

Cool! I took Judo for 3 years as a kid and Taekwondo for 4 years until I was like 16-17 and then I stopped and became too busy being a dumb teenager 😂

  • I watched a landslide in Rochdale, then a comedy show with a silly little man performing outside on a street in London. Truth is often stranger than fiction. <3

Watching “Three-Body” on Amazon Prime, which is the original Chinese-language series based on the best-selling books “The Three-Body Problem”, which is a noted science-fiction book series.

There’s also a very expensive looking English-language remake of this series on Netflix right now (I’m not watching the remake… yet).

Looking forward to that Netflix version

  • I watched yesterday Netflix's Three-body problem. Interesting story but not a must watch. The book is probably better. Some special fx looked very low cost.

  • Fear of Jazz (from The Mighty Boosh)

Out now on Netflix. Enjoying it so far

I tried to read the book a couple of times but I’m terrible with names, I struggle with that although I’ve always been an avid reader. And chinese names, well good luck with that. But now I can put some names to faces and that helps me a lot, although it’s not a 1:1 adaptation, so I’m thinking of reading the books next
On a tangent, I’m sure y’all heard o project hail mary? That is sire to have an adaptation but seems more of a challenge, being 1st person and with all those thoughts.. maybe a narrator? Hard not to make it boring with lots GFX but no content. I’m sure we’ll see

  • Watched Poor Things and Oppenheimer this week. Both stellar.

  • Just digested Dune 2, damn that was good .. I want more, now!! I rarely rewatch (or reread) anything but I might let this sink for a few days and at least think about it.

I really need to see that, the first one was really great and left me in anticipation for this one

  • Second one is great, highly recommend IMAX if you can. Bring on Dune Messiah now!

  • Shogun. SOOOOO good.

Anyone seen fallout (amazon prime)? I really enjoyed but I hadn’t played the games, I see there’s a point of contention. But I found it interesting with no dull moments that plague many series (they hook you first, milk through 80% of the series, then throw a bone at the end and leave you on a cliff-hanger for next season—I really hate that format and why I don’t watch many series, ain’t no one got time for that)
But this one was a little breath of fresh air, although like I said I wouldn’t know how much it diverges from the source material

Only watched the 1st but it’s on queue

  • I thought Fallout was excellent, and I’ve played all the games too. While not quite as popular as say TLOU, I think they did just as good a job of making the show feel like the game.

  • The Jerry Lee Lewis doc on Netflix is really good. What a vivid presence in the world he was.

My dog wanted a lot of lap time last night so I watched it straight through, and could even watch it a second time.

  • Baby Reindeer. Almost perfect

    Blue Lights. Engaging and immediate.

  • Snooker final.
    Yep, was ok.

  • this week watch Eurovision 2024

  • I just watched Shogun. I didn’t pay attention to the last episode properly and I think it’s incredible.

I am a little biased as a Japan-o-phile(I literally love everything about the country -) but primarily based on my 7 year old dream of going being a samurai, (actually did get a black belt in karate) and then I wanted to move to a zen monastery when I was 12, and feudal Japan was my romanticized ideal life …anyway anyone into Japan or samurai will like the show

Anyone who likes good drama will also like it as it’s exceptionally well written

IMO it is superior to the book (which has many flaws), and makes the 1980 miniseries look positively amateur in comparison.

Probably one of the best drama series produced in recent years, and deservedly received critical acclaim.

And now there's word that a second season, going beyond the book, may be on the way.

  • Really enjoying the first season of Shogun on FX, based off the book, and true historical events. The first season recently ended. I have 1 episode left. It’s on Hulu. The show does a really great job of bringing you into the world, heck it pulls you into the world. They do a great job of portraying life in Japan at that time, (700-800AD) the show really shines at conveying the gravity of different situations/dialogue/events. They sometimes use this bokeh that blurs the edges and heightens the sense of importance. It’s well shot, great cinematography, well acted, just well done. It is 75% subtitled. I usually have to be in the mood to watch a subtitled flick/series, ready to really pay attention, so as long as you’re fine with subtitles you should definitely give it a shot.

PS I’ve self dubbed myself the Shogun on the Pickleball courts, lol.
